Victoria’s POV
“Victoria,” he uttered gently, “you can’t keep it.” He smiled. “It’s a wild animal, not a pet.”
I was busy petting an adorable baby beaver. But, Drystan, I really want him.
“Come on, get up. We’re already late,” he said, taking the beaver from my hands and letting it go. Drystan, are you going to teach me how to fight tomorrow? “Victoria, you’re too young and…” I cut him off, glaring. If you say it’s because I’m a girl… “That’s not what I was going to say, Victoria. I was going to say you’re too... beautiful.” I grinned. My brother called me beautiful. Technically, he was my stepbrother, but still, he called me beautiful.I love that memory, even if it feels like it’s from another lifetime, bittersweet and distant.
The forest was quiet, the kind that calmed your nerves, until a branch cracked. I couldn’t even enjoy a sunset by the riverbed without someone showing up.
I’ve gotten good at fading into the background, staying unseen.
The guy walked into view, limping, blood soaking his thigh. He collapsed by the water with a groan, cursing under his breath. Then his head jerked up, alert. His knife caught the failing light, sharp and ready.
He was losing blood quickly. I moved behind him, holding my makeshift sharp stick. One quick move, and it would be over.
“Just kill me,” he mumbled, not bothering to look back. “Or they will.”
“Turn around,” I said, calm and firm. “Drop the knife.”
He hesitated briefly but finally dropped the knife. I kneeled, tore a strip from his shirt, and started working. I ended up a little too close while helping him.
“You smell good,” he said, voice faint but cocky.
“Shut your mouth,” I said, tightening the fabric around his leg. “Or I’ll leave you here to bleed out.”
He winced as I tied the fabric above his wound. Then I left him for a moment, looking for something to help stop the bleeding and ease the pain.
“This is going to hurt. Try not to scream,” I warned.
“Do I look weak to you?” he said, wincing. He cursed when I placed the herb on his cut. “You’ll need to clean it and stitch it up soon, or it’ll get worse. Goodbye,” I said, turning to leave. “Wait,” he called, his voice hardly just above a whisper. “Stay. If I’m going to die, at least let it be in front of someone …I let out a breath.
“Get up. We need to find shelter. And a skunk.” “A skunk?” he laughed, despite the pain. “Yeah, a skunk. Unless you want them to track us, now move.” I helped him up. He was heavy and strong. “What’s your name?” he asked, leaning on me. Silence. “You’re one of those rogue girls, huh?” “Stop calling me ‘girl,’” I snapped. “Then tell me your name,” he said, grinning through the discomfort. He had a decent smile, I had to admit. “Victoria. Happy?” “Thane,” he offered. “Great.” “We’re almost there.” Inside the small cave, I eased him down. “Stay put. I’ll be back.”I came back with some herbs and a canteen of water.
“Where’d you scavenge that?” he asked, eyeing the supplies. “My secret stash. Don’t get any ideas,” I said, throwing him the canteen. “Go ahead and drink,” pressed the herbs onto his leg, and the bleeding slowed. He grabbed my wrist, his grip stronger than he possibly intended. “You’ve got some healer’s touch. Where’d you learn this?” “Survival 101. Now, be quiet and allow me work.”“Stay put. I’ll be back tomorrow,” I said as I finished.
“Victoria… thanks,” I left, but my insides twisted as I thought about him. Too much blood was lost, and infection was practically a guarantee. I sprinted back to the academy, scaled the fence, and entered the dining hall just as dinner was starting. Kara spotted me and gave me a meaningful smile. As I walked toward her, Sienna, my personal nemesis since day one, passed by. “Look at that,” she sneered. “Your hair’s finally growing back. Almost looks like you’re a girl again.” I ignored her. She was going to pay for that haircut. I’d been waiting for the right moment, and today was it. “Kara, cover for me. I’ve got some unfinished business.” “Hurry up,” I hurried into the kitchen, grabbed a glove, and went back outside. Near the fence, I found the plant I needed. I rubbed it on Sienna’s bed sheets, then on her friends’ too. Finally, I smeared it on her pillow. “Payback’s a bitch,” I said out loud, grinning. Three months ago, she cut my hair while I was asleep, just one side, as a twisted prank. I was furious and cut off the rest myself. Now my hair was almost back to normal, and I slept lighter, ready for her next move. Almost.Past midnight…
“Kara, got to bounce. I’ll fill you in later,” I spoke softly, slipping away.
First stop: the nurse’s office. I picked the lock, snagged antibiotics, a suture kit, and painkillers, and went to the kitchen for protein bars and a loaf of bread. Backpack loaded, I hopped the fence and took off, light in hand, same route.
He was still breathing when I found him. I brushed his cheek gently.
“Victoria,” he mumbled, barely conscious.
“Hey, I’m here. I need to clean and stitch you up, so stay quiet, okay? Take these pills first.”
“Kiss me,” he slurred, eyes half-closed.
“What? No, you’re delirious.”
“Kiss me before I die…”
“You’re not dying. Bite this.” I was about to put a stick in his mouth, but he grabbed my wrist, pulled me close, and kissed me. Our eyes met for a moment, which felt too long. I pulled away, my cheeks burning. “Pants off. Now.”
He gave a weak laugh. “Shouldn’t that be my line?”
“Bite down. This is going to hurt a lot.” I smiled, but my hands stayed steady.
I cleaned the wound, stitched it up (9 stitches total), and bandaged it tightly. Couldn’t help but notice his body was all muscle.
“Finished. Don’t even think about moving,” I said, leaning back to inspect my work.
He gave a weak grin. I dozed off for a while, but woke up to find his arm burning with fever. Damn. I turned on the flashlight, gave him two more pills, and put a cold compress on his forehead. “Victoria…” he uttered. “I’m here,” I said, replacing the compress as his eyes opened wide. “You’re my beautiful angel,” he spoke quietly. I smiled. “Delirious and still a charmer, huh?” He brushed my face with his hand, weakly. Before I knew it, I was asleep against his arm.
By daybreak, his fever had broken. “Thane, wake up. I’ve got to go,” I said, shaking him lightly. He opened his eyes, his arms pulling me on top of him. “I still want that kiss, Victoria,” he said, his blue eyes focused and staring into mine.Cadmus’s POVI watched her sprawled on the bed, and got aroused again. Chuckled. We enjoyed each other until she went limp. We can finally do things we couldn’t before. My dark side was my beast. I touched her bumps, and the redness was gone. She screamed and moaned, and I was afraid she wouldn’t like it. Victoria never ceases to surprise me. I walked to the large window and stared at the city about to awake. The fear I live with every day is for her safety. I will not let her get hurt. I love her with all my being. I love her because I have never loved anyone ever. She completes me, feels me, and is attuned to my everything, just like we're supposed to be.I feel her hands on my back, then her chest, and I close my eyes. Her hand touched me on the chest, then slid down to my cock. She massages it and is already erect as she places kisses on my scarred back.Comes to the front, and she goes on her knees, licks her lips, and I grab her hair. This was unexpected, and I like how she is n
Abrax’s POVSlava and Dad left, and I walked the long hallway, looking behind me. No guard following me.I got inside her office and locked the door. Kan whimpered.I know her scent is disgusting, I told him. Kan, my wolf spirit and constant companion, was restless in my mind. Sharing my head with him was sometimes confusing, but mostly comforting. But we are here to find a clue to where our mate, Raya, is.Kan got excited.I opened drawers and looked at files, then I came across one about Cadmus. I started to read.Cadmus was the real alpha king, born into the bloodline and very powerful. I did not know that. Only one wolf in a generation could hold that title—the alpha king was meant to unite the packs, rule above all alphas, and hold the old magic in their veins. Alpha kings were rare; commands passed directly from them, and their word meant peace or war for everyone. The power wasn't just inherited; it was shaped by destiny and the approval of the ancient spirits.I went under the
Six months laterVictoria’s POVHarder, Victoria, and watch your back, Cadmus shouted while Balthazar stood next to him.I’ve been training every day, and I was better at controlling the fire part of me. But I discovered the dark part, and Cadmus said I needed to learn to embrace it too.The dark part of me was simmering inside, wanting to come out. It wanted to hurt them and extinguish the flame; it was like a battle inside of me.Okay, enough for today, he shouted. Now that he's closer, let's get your dark side out. Ready?I nodded. Waving bye to my dad, we walked into the thick forest. I undressed to shift. He stood behind me. Close your eyes, he whispered in my ear, sending shivers, making me aroused.I smell you, woman, hang in there.Hunt, feel your surroundings, let the dark side guide you. I shifted. My senses heightened. My head snapped in one direction, and I bolted. Then I saw a big stag. Beautiful.I lunged after him, my paws leaving marks on the moist dirt. I caught up wi
Victoria’s POVGerda hugged me softly. Long time no see, and many things have happened. The goddess gave you another chance, and your daughter Thalia is gifted. Her gift is special. The guardians are her shield now.I stood there listening to her, wondering how much she knew. Gerda was a very powerful witch.Slava has Raya. I did not know she was your daughter. You might not know she’s already mated to Abrax since she was three. In our world, being 'mated' means that two souls are bound together by destiny, chosen by the Goddess herself, and this bond can be sensed from a very young age—though children do not understand its meaning until much later. When Abrax and Raya were little, we saw them together. They didn’t know what it meant, but there was a clear connection between them. Abrax had a bond with her, and they communicated in ways only true mates can, even before words were spoken. This bond makes them inseparable, and it’s what makes her so important—and vulnerable—now.Gerda c
Cadmus’s POVI heard others behind me as I shifted and bolted in the direction of screams. Then I smelled fire.Fuck, she’s in danger. I picked up my running pace. The fire was raging, its heat hitting my face even from yards away, making the air shimmer and my lungs choke on thick, bitter smoke. Victoria stood rooted in place, her eyes sharp and fixed ahead, determination locked in every line of her face. Abrax, in his wolf form, pressed close to her side, fur bristling and body tense. The rogues circled them, their lips curled back to reveal rows of white teeth, snarling as they darted closer, then snapped away just out of reach of Victoria’s crackling power. Flames danced wildly, throwing shadows across Victoria’s face and reflecting in her wide, fearful eyes. She raised a hand, trying to warn them off, body shaking not just with effort but with the desperate hope she wouldn’t have to hurt them. The rogues saw us and bolted. I nudged her, and she lost her balance, falling. I was ab
Cadmus’s POVI felt the buzz, and Victoria finally relaxed as she talked to Alice, sitting in my lap. Earlier, we went into the forest just teasing each other. My arm was holding her tight against me. I needed her so badly, but I also want her to relax. Coming back to this place brings bad memories, the betrayal. It seemed like a lifetime ago, and I worked hard to earn her trust. I was careful, like walking on eggs.Makarius sat across from us, and I felt her body tensing. Our son will be a powerful Alpha, Makarius said, looking at her like I was, and I growled.Yes, he is already, and if you want him to grow free, then make a decision, Makarius. You end it, or I will; my son will suffer no more. You think it's that easy, Victoria? There are many factors involved. Then tell us, Makarius, Drystan said. Help us to help you.Stay out of it, he snapped. I was talking to Victoria, and his face turned to her.Don’t be rude to my brother Makarius; he is my family. He cares.“That’s what you
The scent of flowers hit me first, then something off, chemical, maybe. Funeral vibes, I thought. My eyelids felt like bricks. When I finally pried them open, I was in a cramped room. Makarius was beside me in bed, and Pirate was slumped in a chair, head lolling like a broken doll.I shifted my arm
" Do you have a death wish?" he whispered.I tried to lift my head. "Why do you care?" His hand pressed me back down, gentle but firm."I want in," he said. "On your escape plan.""I don't trust someone who won't even share his name.""Makarius."A wild laugh escaped me. "No... how?" I squeezed my
I jolted awake, crammed between Pirate and a stranger with muscles rippling under his torn shirt. My knees jammed against my chin, bones aching from hours in this position.Every time I drifted off, my head snapped forward and then crashed onto the stranger's shoulder. His warmth seeped through me.
Victoria’s POVDad, how is the transition going? I asked as I held Abrax on my hipEveryone has moved in, and the trucks are bringing the supplies and the rest of the furniture.I’m so excited, I can hardly wait to get back. The city is fine, but I belong in the wild.He laughed. My wild girl, you
