Julian’s POV

The forest is a hellscape of fire and smoke, the air thick with the stench of burning pine and gunpowder as I fight my way through the chaos, my heart pounding with a single, desperate need: Sophia. Her scream still echoes in my ears, a sound that tears at my soul, driving me forward despite the gunfire and explosions rocking the clearing. The safehouse cabin is a smoldering ruin behind me, mercenaries’ bodies scattered among the debris, their tactical gear no match for my rage. Asher’s at my side, his arm bleeding, his gun raised, but his face is grim, his loyalty the only thing keeping him upright. “She’s out there, Julian,” he says, his voice rough. “We’ll find her.”

I nod, my switchblade slick with blood, my mind a storm of fear and fury. Sophia,my Sophia, carrying our child is somewhere in this inferno, hunted by enemies I can’t name. My grandfather, Daniel, betrayed me, using her as leverage to control me and Lucas, to protect his empire. Emily, Asher’s wife, turned traitor, her jealousy a weapon in Daniel’s hands. Nadya, my ex, her vengeance a fire I didn’t see coming. And now, a new player a ghost from Sophia’s past, someone she thought was dead, orchestrating explosions, pulling strings I can’t untangle. My vendetta against Lucas’s family for my parents’ accident feels distant now, overshadowed by the need to save her, to protect the future we could have.

An explosion rocks the forest, the ground trembling, and I duck behind a tree, my eyes scanning the clearing. The wrecked van smolders, its frame twisted, and I spot Lucas, sprawled on the ground, blood pooling from a chest wound, his gun beside him. He’s alive, barely, his gray eyes wild with pain and obsession. “Sophia,” he rasps, his voice a ghost of his usual arrogance. I want to end him, to bury my blade in his heart for what he’s done to her, but there’s no time Sophia’s out there, and every second counts.

“Where is she?” I snarl, kneeling beside him, my blade at his throat. His laugh is weak, blood bubbling on his lips. “You’ll never keep her,” he says, his eyes gleaming with defiance. “She’s mine.” I press the blade harder, but Asher grabs my arm, pulling me back. “He’s not worth it,” he says. “Sophia’s the priority.”

I stand, my chest heaving, my eyes locking on the forest. The helicopter’s light sweeps overhead, its thump a relentless pulse, and I hear shouts—mercenaries, or something worse. My mind flashes to Daniel, his cold calculation, his empire built on secrets, including the truth about my parents’ accident. Did he know more than he let on? Was he complicit? The thought fuels my rage, but I push it down, focusing on Sophia. She’s pregnant, vulnerable, and I swore to protect her.

A scream cuts through the night Sophia’s, raw and desperate and I’m running, my boots pounding the earth, Asher at my heels. The forest is a maze of flames and shadows, but I follow her voice, my heart a drumbeat of fear. I burst into a smaller clearing, my breath catching as I see her tracks bare footprints, smeared with blood, leading to a shallow ravine. My pulse spikes, and I slide down the slope, my eyes scanning for her. “Sophia!” I shout, my voice breaking, but the only answer is the crackle of flames and the helicopter’s roar.

At the ravine’s edge, I find her gun—Lucas’s gun, dropped in the dirt, blood on the handle. My heart stops. She was here, fighting, but where is she now? I scan the area, my blade ready, and spot movement Nadya, her rifle raised, her dark hair wild, her eyes burning with a hatred I should’ve seen coming. “You,” I growl, stepping forward, my body coiled to strike. “Where’s Sophia?”

Nadya’s smile is cold, cruel. “She’s gone, Julian. You lost her, just like you lost me.” Her words are a knife, twisting in old wounds, but I don’t care about her pain only Sophia’s. I lunge, my blade aimed for her arm, but she dodges, her rifle swinging toward me. Asher fires, the shot grazing her shoulder, and she stumbles, cursing, but before I can close the distance, a new figure emerges from the smoke a tall, cloaked shadow, holding a detonator, their face obscured but their presence chillingly familiar.

“Stand down, Gray,” they say, their voice low, cutting through the chaos. My blood runs cold not Daniel, not Emily, but someone else, someone who knows me, knows Sophia. I freeze, my blade still raised, my mind racing. Who are they? A ghost from Sophia’s past, she said, but how do they know me? The detonator glints, and I realize they’re the one behind the explosions, the one pulling strings even Daniel fears.

“Where’s Sophia?” I demand, my voice a growl, my heart pounding with a fear I can’t name. The figure laughs, a sound that sends ice through my veins, and raises the detonator. “She’s where she needs to be,” they say. “And you’re too late.”

Before I can move, Nadya fires, the bullet whistling past me, and I dive for cover, Asher pulling me behind a boulder. The ground shakes as another explosion erupts, closer this time, flames surging through the trees. I peer out, my eyes locking on the figure, their cloak billowing as they step back into the shadows. Nadya’s gone, vanished in the chaos, but I hear a faint moan Sophia’s, weak but alive, coming from the ravine’s depths.

I scramble down, my heart in my throat, and find her, slumped against a rock, her wrists still bound, blood streaking her face, her eyes fluttering. “Julian,” she whispers, her voice barely audible, and I pull her into my arms, my blade cutting through the zip ties, freeing her. “I’ve got you,” I say, my voice breaking, but her skin is cold, her breathing shallow ,a needle mark on her neck, fresh, glinting with residue. Another drug, another betrayal.

“Stay with me,” I plead, lifting her, my eyes scanning for Asher. He’s above, firing at unseen enemies, his shouts drowned by the helicopter’s roar. I carry Sophia, my body shielding hers, but the figure with the detonator steps into the light, their face finally visible a man, older, his features hauntingly familiar, a scar across his cheek. My father’s old partner, thought dead, now alive, his eyes burning with a vengeance I don’t understand.

“You should’ve stayed out of it, Julian,” he says, pressing the detonator, and the ravine erupts, rocks collapsing around us, trapping us in a cage of stone and fire. Sophia’s hand slips from mine, her body limp, as a hidden panel in the rock slides open, revealing a tunnel and a new figure Daniel, his pistol raised, his eyes cold. “This ends now,” he says, but a shot rings out from behind him, blood spraying, and I don’t know who fired or who’s hit as the tunnel’s darkness swallows us, leaving Sophia’s fate hanging in the balance. Who’s alive, and what secrets does this ghost hold?
