Jeanet

I’m trying by all means to avoid contact with Damien, especially after what he said to me at work today, but he is everywhere, so I resort to giving him the silent treatment. Without Linda in the house, things are worse.

I’m in the kitchen to get water when I find him standing next to the refrigerator and drinking out of a water bottle after his evening workout.

Damien is shirtless and wearing sweatpants, my eyes can’t look away from his ripped upper body. He follows my gaze, and I wait for him to give me the look of disgust for staring, but it doesn’t come. He walks away without saying a word.

I sit on the bar stool and stare into space while I drink water. Damien walks back in a few minutes later; this time, he is wearing a t-shirt.

The moment I see him, I fight the urge to close my eyes to avoid thinking about his body. His gaze is soft, and this confuses me.

I get down from the stool, and he stands in front of me. He mirrors my step to the side. I desperately want to scream at him, but that is what he wants, and I refuse to give him the satisfaction.

I sigh. “Some personal space will be highly appreciated,” I say with a fake smile.

“You are angry,” he says.

I gasp and dramatically place a hand on my chest. “You should’ve told me that you were offering your services as a psychologist for free. I wouldn’t have wasted so much money on therapy.”

“I knew you wouldn’t stay quiet for long,” his lips slightly curl up.

“What do you want from me, Damien?”

He exhales. “I want to speak to you about today.”

“What about today?” I glare at him in disbelief. It was horrible when he said it, and he wants to bring it up again.

“I didn’t mean that.”

“I think you did. You know what? I don’t care what you think of me or what anyone else thinks of me. You can all go to hell! I don’t care.”

“Jeanet, I…” He runs a frustrated hand through his hair.

“What is the thing that you didn’t mean?”

“Come on, Jeanet,” he says. “Work with me here. I’m trying.”

“From my point of view, you are not trying anything at all."

“You are not going to make this easy for me, are you?” He moves a little too close, and I can’t breathe. He has just gotten out of the shower, and he smells so good. I look up at him. There is some distance between us, but it doesn’t feel like it’s enough, so I take a step back. His chuckle is flirty and seductive. “You can’t stand me, and you won’t even hide it.”

“Takes one to know one,” I shrug. “I can’t stand you the same way you can’t stand me either.”

“Touché,” he smiles a genuine smile, showing teeth and all. So this is another reason there are so many people who are going crazy about him?

“So, what did you want to talk about?” I take another step back.

“Oh! That…” He trails off. “I’m so,” he clears his throat. “I’m sorry.”

“Who forced you to apologize? You sound like someone who has never apologized a day in his life.”

He takes a step towards me, his long legs covering the distance between us. “No one forced me, and you should know that I apologize when I’m wrong.”

“So, what are you apologizing for right now?” My voice comes out breathy. I take two steps back, and he winces. I'm comforted by the knowledge that he thinks I'm doing this because I can't stand him.

“Sorry for saying Nam Ji-Hwan doesn’t deserve you. I didn’t mean it,” he says flatly.

“Why did you say it?”

“Because you are fresh out of a relationship and…”

“Wait, you care?” I interject.

“No,” he grimaces. “Not about you, but if you get hurt, that will affect your performance at work.”

“Don’t worry, it won’t.”

“So, you are not going out with him?” he asks.

“I am going out with him, but I promise that it will not affect my performance.”

“Good,” he said in a clipped tone. He walks away, leaving me in the kitchen and feeling as if I said something wrong.

************************

I am lying in bed, reading a book about the Constitution. There are four more receptionists at Damien’s law firm, and all of them are students in law schools.

Everyone has been kind, but I always feel as if they are speaking about me behind my back. I’m the only one in the company who didn’t make it to university, and nothing screams ‘nepotism’ more than that.

What surprises me is that Damien never ever mentions my lack of qualifications, no matter how much we argue.

I perk up when I hear a knock on my door. It’s gentle and a little hesitant, unlike Linda’s usual knock. Did she come back early from campus? Is she sad?

“Come in.” I jump out of bed, ready to give her a hug if she needs it. “I thought you would be in the lab until…”

My shoulders drop the moment the door opens.

“What do you want, Damien?”

He tries to keep a straight face, but his dark eyes are all lit up. “Is that a way of speaking to your boss?”

JeanetDamien has been calling multiple people to find out where Linda is. I'm pacing back and forth in the penthouse as I wait. We spend almost the entire night in silence, and another part is where Damien is taking phone calls and calling more people. "Linda is at another hotel," he finally says."Okay," I sigh with relief. "I'm glad she's safe.""I'm worried about her," he admits."Me too.""She's hurting," he exhales. "I don't know what to do. She didn't even use her credit card that I pay for to avenge herself.""How is she going to get home?" "She has her savings, or she could use her other credit card. I don't want to call her to ask. She already accused me of being controlling," he grimaces. With his level of vulnerability, I almost want to hug him. "I want to give her the space she needs," he sighs. "She doesn't deserve this," I blink back tears. "I know.""What kind of monsters are we?" I lie on the mat and face the ceiling. "You are not a monster. I am. How was I not

Jeanet "What does the text even say?" I pretend not to be interested. "They mentioned something about you keeping a secret from me.""Which one are you talking about?" I blurt out. Did Rachel tell her already? But it's too soon, I thought she had to blackmail me for some time before telling Linda what's going on."Do you have secrets?" she gasps. "No," I vigorously shake my head. "It's just that this story makes a little more sense. It fits part of a puzzle that has been filling me with questions for years. Are you sure you are not keeping any secrets from me?" She raises her brows. "Don't you dare play that game, Linda," I say defensively. "You had a closet full of secrets, and you never told me a thing.""So, now you want to turn this around?" She chuckles. "I told you I was keeping secrets for your protection. Why are you keeping secrets from me?" "For your protection too, to protect your feelings?" I half-ask."Wow, I can't believe you." She wipes tears with the back of her

Jeanet I study his face for some smirk or a twitch of the lips that confirms that he's joking or mocking me, but there's none. "You?" I raise a brow. "Damien Rugiero thinks that he might have some feelings for me?" I laugh but he doesn't laugh with me. "I don't just think," he sighs. "I know, and it's not just some feelings. It's real feelings.""Are you sure? Are you not drunk?" He glares at me. "You know that I don't drink.""But it's impossible." I get up and take a few steps back. "Why do you think so?" He gets up too and walks towards me, but he still keeps some distance between us. "I don't know." I shake my head. "It's just impossible. I think you can't think straight because we are surrounded by nature and you are confused a little. Maybe this is a romantic place, and it makes you think only of romance."His jaw tightens. "I understand you not wanting me. But, for you to try to invalidate the feelings that I have for you, that's..." He shakes his head. "What am I suppos

  • Taming My Best Friend's Uncle   Chapter 47

JeanetIt's the 26th, and Damien is not in the house. So, it's just me, Linda, and the bodyguards. They are usually just somewhere we can't see them, but we were promised that they would always show up when needed. The mysterious person who has been sending texts asked for a meeting, and I don't know if I should sneak out or take at least two bodyguards and the driver. If I sneak out and get kidnapped like last time, it might cost Damien. I still have no idea what he did for me to get released when I got kidnapped the first time. Perhaps I should've told him about the texts because he knows about the money. After all, he's the one who gave it to me. When I call the number that Damien gave me, the three bodyguards appear in the kitchen within seconds. I take two bodyguards with me, and the driver takes me to meet this mysterious person at a restaurant. The moment I see her, I shake my head in disbelief. I tell the bodyguards that it's okay for them to wait for me outside, unless I

Jeanet "What about him?" I ask defensively. "Nothing. He's actually a good guy. There are so many people who have a crush on him, but he doesn’t have an ego.""Would you approve if I went out with him?" I beam. "You don't need my approval. You should do what you want.""Someone is growing."He shoots me a dirty look. Someone knocks on the window of his car, and he opens the door. "No, you don't have to get out of the car. I came to say hello.""How are you, Father?" He shakes the priest's hand. "I'm glad that you came to church, and who's the lady? Is she the future Mrs...""No!" we say at the same time. "I apologize," he says sheepishly. "I shouldn't have assumed.""It's okay, Father," Damien smiles. "This is Jeanet. She's a friend of the family.""Nice to meet you, Jeanet," he smiles at me. "Nice to meet you too, Father." I smile back. We sit in awkward silence after he has left. "You spend most nights out," I say to fill the silence. "It's December. People go out all the

JeanetLinda and I bought a Christmas tree. We are having a lazy morning on the 20th as we hang the ornaments. "I think we are getting old," I say to Linda."I know," she sighs. "Are we not supposed to be partying somewhere like we used to?" "Maybe we are already old."She gasps audibly. "Don't say that, we are just babies." She purses her lips. "We are almost thirty. Damien was married, and he had already accomplished so much at our age.""Damien had no choice," she snorts. "He had to work hard, but we have him. Why should we work hard when he already did?""Well, you have him," I point out. "I don't have anyone."She glares at me. "I thought you have me, and Uncle Damien promised me that he got your back.""He did?" "Yes," she nods. "From now on, let's do things at our own pace. Even if Uncle Damien wasn't around, we would be sharing a cheap apartment somewhere and trying to make it one day at a time, but we would still get where we want.""Awww! That's wise.""Thank you," she b
