Chapter 1

Lulu’s POV

At exactly 3am, I was one badly written sentence away from committing a crime.

My laptop was overheating, my eyes burned, and three academic projects were demanding my attention. As a broke playwriting student, I had learned to survive on cheap coffee and the desperate hope that graduation would free me from financial slavery.

I sighed in exhaustion, dropped everything that had to do with academic work and went on my phone to continue reading a trending billionaire romance novel I had been on for some time now.

Twenty minutes later, I wanted to sue the author.

The female lead, Ivelle Armani, was kneeling before her cold billionaire husband, Jasver Chadwick, begging him not to divorce her. The man had spent chapters upon chapters humiliating her while shamelessly favoring his first love, Liora. Yet somehow Ivelle was still crying about losing him.

I stared at the screen in disbelief. I opened the comments section and typed furiously.

If I were her, I’d take the money and run!

I felt a wave of satisfaction as I tossed my phone aside and returned to my assignments.

I can’t remember falling asleep but when I woke up, I wasn’t seated at my work space anymore.

A sharp headache made my skull feel like it had fought with a sledgehammer. I heard the loud CLACK of a pen striking glass.

When I opened my eyes, I was sitting in an enormous dining room, surrounded by expensive furniture and freezing AC. Across the glass table was a handsome man in a rich black suit, his expression colder than the room. Beside him was a beautiful woman clinging to his arm. She looked fragile.

She looked familiar. They both did. They fit the description in— Jasver Chadwick and Liora Gwendolyn!

My blood ran cold as I tried to search my mind for a logical explanation. I looked down at the document in front of me. It was a divorce settlement agreement with Ivelle Armani’s name beneath it.

This couldn’t be happening. I had somehow transmigrated into the novel I’d been reading and judging by the document, I had arrived at the exact moment when the original Ivelle was supposed to embarrass herself by begging her husband to reconsider.

Jasver leaned forward, grinning. “I have tolerated your behavior long enough, Ivelle. Your jealousy and constant attempts to interfere in my relationship with Liora have become exhausting. She deserves a peaceful environment, and I refuse to let you ruin her life any longer.”

Liora closed her eyes in the most fake dramatic show of remorse I’d ever seen. I wanted to throw up.

She squeezed his arm. “Please don’t be so harsh, Jasver. I know she’s hurting, and I don’t want to come between you.”

Jasver continued, apparently convinced that his speech was devastating.

“I never loved you. Whatever you imagined our marriage to be existed only in your head. Sign the papers, take the settlement, and stop bothering me.”

He sat back, waiting for my response. I could practically see his expectations hanging in the air. He wanted tears and another pathetic plea of undying love.

I tried to hold it in but I couldn’t. I burst out laughing at how absurdly cliche they looked.

Both of them stared at me.

Jasver’s eyebrows raised. “What is so funny?”

“Nothing,” I managed to say between laughs. “I’m just enjoying this more than I should.”

I picked up the agreement and flipped until I got to the last page. The settlement amount was fifty million dollars.

I stopped laughing immediately and read the figure again counting all the zeros again just to make sure my brain wasn’t messing with me.

Fifty million dollars.

I could buy a house, start a business and still have enough left to avoid instant noodles for the rest of my life.

Without hesitating, I grabbed the pen.

Jasver sat upright, his eyes growing wide with disbelief. “What are you doing?”

“Signing obviously.”

His hands balled. “Don’t play games with me, Ivelle.”

“Don’t distract me. Where do I sign again?”

Liora’s mouth fell open as I signed the document and slid it to Jasver then tossed the pen at his chest.

Jasver stared at my signature. “You… signed?”

“Yes.”

“Just like that?”

“Is there any more I need to sign?”

For the first time, Jasver looked lost. Liora’s fake tears froze on her cheeks.

“But, Ivelle,” she whispered, “surely you don’t mean to leave without even trying to—”

“To what? Convince a man to love me?” I jumped up and grabbed my purse. “Keep him. He sounds exhausting.”

I took my copy of the settlement and carried my suitcase. I stopped when I got to the doorway to blow a kiss at Jasver. “Thanks for the cash, loser.”

Then I walked away. By noon, I had booked a luxury penthouse suite overlooking the city. I jumped on the enormous bed and laughed into the pillows.

I was fucking rich! I opened my bank app and admired the money.

“Dear universe, I take back everything bad I’ve ever said about you.”

I saw the date was 14th of August. Suddenly I remembered something important that happened in the original story. On the sixteenth, a technology company would announce a revolutionary breakthrough, causing their stock price to skyrocket. Also an abandoned resort outside the city would become extremely valuable when the government discovered an enormous oil reserve beneath the land.

I opened my laptop and got to work. First, I contacted a property broker and negotiated to purchase the abandoned resort. Then I transferred most of my remaining funds into the technology company’s shares.

Everything was in place. I was satisfied by the progress I’d made by the time I ordered an expensive dinner.

For the next two days, I lived like royalty. I shopped without checking price tags, ate at restaurants where the waiters dressed like businessmen and carried my handbag at the door, and ignored calls from Jasver’s lawyer.

Whatever Jasver wanted, he could put it in an email. I had better things to do.

On the morning of the sixteenth, I woke up practically vibrating with excitement because I knew it was payday.

I made a cup of expensive coffee and walked into the balcony, before opening my trading app. My smile disappeared immediately. The stock price was red.

It was catastrophically red, dropping to a shocking −40%. I blinked and refreshed the page more than a 100times but the number remained.

“What” I gasped. “This isn’t possible.”

The coffee cup slipped from my hand and shattered on the tiles.

“No. No, that’s not right.”

I refreshed the app repeatedly, watching my money disappear before my eyes. This was not what had happened in the novel. The company was supposed to succeed. I knew because I had read the damn chapters!

“Okay,” I whispered, pacing the room. “Maybe the announcement got delayed. Maybe the market was reacting badly before it recovers. Maybe—”

Another notification chimed on my phone showing the stock was dropping further. Somehow, the plot has changed. The realization hit harder than the financial loss.

A sudden chill crawled across my skin settling in my spine. I stopped pacing. The penthouse was freezing.

I rubbed her palms together, watching my breath turn into a cloud. The lights flickered, and a mechanical ringing sounded inside my skull.

“Ah! What is that?” I grabbed my head.

The sound grew louder, sharp enough to make my knees weak. Then, without warning, it stopped.

A glowing blue screen appeared directly in front of my face. I stumbled backward. Words appeared on the screen.

HOST DETECTED.

I stared, confused. A mechanical voice echoed inside my head.

“Unauthorized deviation from the original storyline identified.”

“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.” I gasped in disbelief.

PUNISHMENT MODE ACTIVATED.
