Chapter 1

Hannah’s POV

“Congratulations, you’re pregnant. And it’s twins. Your husband Ethan is going to be shocked.”

Dr. Mitchell’s words kept echoing in my head.

“I can’t believe it. Is this actually happening? I’m pregnant… with twins?”

My mind went completely blank. Ethan and I had been married for three years, doing everything we could in hopes of having a child. I had dreamed of this moment for so long. I never imagined it would come as a double miracle.

On the ride home from the hospital, I stared out the window and kept imagining how I would tell Ethan. I pictured his warm, crinkled smile and the way he would look genuinely overjoyed while pretending to be embarrassed. I couldn’t wait to see that expression.

Even our longtime driver noticed something different about me.

“Miss Hannah, did something wonderful happen today? You’ve been smiling to yourself since earlier.”

“Yes. Something truly beautiful and life-changing happened.”

My husband, Ethan Harrison, is the young CEO of the Harrison Group. Sharp eyes, a straight nose, and a confidence that always surrounded him. From the first time I saw him, I was stunned by how flawless he looked. I had loved him since high school, and he was my first love.

As the daughter of the Jefferson family, my marriage was always meant to be arranged by my father and grandfather. It was a political marriage. I had resigned myself to marrying someone chosen for the family’s benefit, not for love. The future felt bleak.

But fate wasn’t entirely unkind.

When Ethan walked into the arranged meeting as the Harrison heir, I was so shocked I couldn’t speak. I never imagined my first love would become my husband. That night, I was so happy I couldn’t sleep, overwhelmed with joy and relief. And so, we became husband and wife.

Three years have passed. Ethan is now the CEO and constantly busy, but every day, I feel grateful that I married the man I loved for so long.

I had wished for this pregnancy for so many years. I wanted to tell him myself and see his face light up.

I thought about calling him as soon as I left the hospital, but I knew it was something I needed to say in person.

As soon as I got home, I started making Ethan’s favorite lasagna from scratch. Even the sauce. Our household chef was wonderful, but for something this special, I wanted to be the one who cooked. I wanted to surprise him, just the two of us.

I wondered what kind of face he would make and what he would say.

While the sauce simmered, I imagined him smiling and imagined the life we were about to begin as a family of four. I texted him to ask when he would be home so the lasagna would be fresh, but he never responded.

I ended up dozing off on the sofa, and when the sound of the car engine woke me, it was already past ten.

I hurried to the entryway to greet him.

“Welcome home.”

“I’m back.”

“You look exhausted. Are you okay?”

“Yeah. I need to talk to you. Is now a good time?”

His voice was lower and colder than usual. He looked worn-out, but even in his exhaustion, he carried that quiet masculinity that always made my heart skip.

Even after three years, meeting his eyes still sent a warm rush through my chest.

Trying not to worry too much about the shadow in his expression, I followed him into the living room.

Maybe he was just exhausted from work. But once he heard about the pregnancy, maybe everything would brighten again.

“Do you want to eat first? I made your favorite lasagna tonight because there’s something I want to tell you.”

“So this is how you try to butter me up now?”

“What?”

For a moment, I wondered if I misunderstood him. Ethan wasn’t the type to say things like that. He was always calm, sharp-minded, and composed. He had never spoken in a way that made me or anyone else uncomfortable. I couldn’t believe those words came from him.

“Ethan, did something happen at work? Did something go wrong? Are you tired? If there’s anything I can do—”

I knelt beside him on the sofa and reached out, but he immediately pulled away with a look of irritation I had never seen before.

“Don’t touch me. Just leave it. Here. I need you to sign this.”

After a long, heavy sigh, he reached into his briefcase and pulled out a plain white envelope.

I had no idea what it was, but the second I saw the title on the document inside, my mind went completely blank.

What is this?

“Divorce Agreement.”

Those were the words written on the papers he handed to me.
