LOGINEmerald POV
The servants' hall is crowded.
I do not know why I came here. Rina told me to stay in my room. She told me it was not safe.
But I am tired of hiding.
So I walk down the corridor. Past the kitchens. Past the pantries. Past the servants who stare at me like I am a ghost.
I am not a ghost.
I am not a slave either.
I am something in between. Something they do not understand.
"You."
I freeze.
Kendal stands at the end of the hall. Her guards flank her. Her smile is sharp as a blade.
"Well, well," she says. "The little wolf comes out of her den."
"I am not a wolf."
"No. You are less than a wolf. A mongrel. A stray. Something Cassius picked up off the street."
I say nothing.
She walks toward me. Her heels click against the stone floor. The servants scatter like leaves in the wind. No one wants to be near her when she is like this.
"Did you think I would forget?" she asks.
"Forget what?"
"That you took him from me."
"I did not take anyone."
"You breathed. You existed. That was enough."
She stops in front of me. Close enough that I can smell her perfume. Heavy. Overpowering. Like flowers rotting in the sun.
"You are nothing," she says. "A nobody. A slave. A piece of meat he bought for one night."
I keep my face still. "Is that what you think?"
"I know it."
"Then why are you so scared of me?"
Her eyes flash.
"Scared?" She laughs. "I am not scared of you."
"Then why are you here? Why are you threatening me in front of all these servants? If I am nothing, why do you care?"
She slaps me.
The sound echoes through the hall.
My cheek burns. My ears ring. But I do not cry. I do not flinch.
I have been hit before. By worse people than her.
"I am going to destroy you," she says. "Piece by piece. I will take everything you have. Everything you are. And when you have nothing left, I will throw you out like the garbage you are."
"Good luck," I say.
"Excuse me?"
"Your threats are empty. You are loud. But you are not powerful. If you were, I would already be gone."
She raises her hand again.
"She is right."
I look up.
Rina stands at the end of the hall. Her face is hard. Her hand is on her sword.
"Step away from her," Rina says.
Kendal laughs. "Or what?"
"Or I will show you what happens to people who touch the Alpha's property."
"I am the Alpha's fiancée."
"Temporarily."
Kendal's face goes white.
Rina walks toward us. Slow. Deliberate. The servants part for her like water.
"Emerald," Rina says. "Come with me."
I do not move.
"Emerald. Now."
I look at Kendal. Her eyes are burning with hatred. Her hands are shaking.
"Goodbye, Lady Kendal," I say.
I walk away.
Her screams echo behind me.
Rina leads me to my room. Closes the door. Locks it.
"She will not forget this," Rina says.
"I know."
"You should not have gone down there."
"I know."
"She will try again."
"I know."
Rina looks at me. Her face is hard. But her eyes are soft.
"You fought back," she says.
"Yes."
"Most people do not."
"Most people are not me."
She almost smiles.
That night, I lie in bed.
My cheek still stings. My heart still pounds.
But I do not regret it.
Kendal is not my enemy.
She is just a woman who cannot accept that she lost.
I close my eyes.
And for the first time in weeks, I sleep without dreaming.

Cassius POVI am in the throne room when she arrives. The doors slam open.I do not turn around. I already know who it is. I can smell her perfume from across the room. Heavy. Cloying. Like flowers left in the sun too long.Kendal.She storms in like a hurricane. Her heels click against the stone floor. Her skirts swish. Her guards scramble to keep up."You," she says.I turn. She stands in the middle of the room. Her face is red. Her eyes are wild. Her hands are clenched at her sides. She is furious.Good."Good morning, Kendal," I say."Do not good morning me.""Then what would you prefer? Good afternoon? Emerald POVThree days pass.Three days of Rina shadowing my every step. Three days of the same four walls. Three days of staring out the window at mountains I cannot reach.I am going insane. Not the dramatic kind of insane. Not the screaming, crying, throwing things kind. The quiet kind. The kind where you sit in silence for so long that you forget what your own voice sounds like.Rina does not talk much. She stands by the door like a statue. She watches me eat. She watches me sleep. She watches me stare at the ceiling for hours.I should hate her.But I do not.She is just doing her job. And her job is keeping me alive.Even if I am not sure I want to be alive anymore. The knock comes at noon. Not Rina's knock. She does not knock. She just walks in.This knock is soft. Hesitant. Like the person on the other side is afraid of being yelled at."Come in," I say.The door opens.A maid stands there. Young. Younger than me. Her hands grip a silver tray so tight her knuckles are white."
Emerald POVThe sun rises. I do not.I have been sitting on the edge of my bed since they dragged me back inside. My knees still ache from hitting the stone floor. My wrists still burn where the guards grabbed me.But worse than the pain is the shame.I tried to escape. And I failed. Now everyone knows. The guards. The servants. Him.Especially him.I press the heels of my palms against my eyes. The darkness behind my lids is kinder than the sunlight creeping through the window. What am I going to do?The lock clicks.I look up.Cassius walks in. No knock. No announcement. Just his boots on my floor and his shadow on my wall.He is alone. No guards. No Massimus. Just him.I stand. My legs are weak. I do not sit back down. I will not look weak in front of him."Good morning," he says."Is it?""I slept well.""I do not care how you slept."He walks to the window. Opens the curtains. Sunlight floods the room. I squint. My eyes burn."You tried to escape last night," he says."You alread
Emerald POVThe castle sleeps. But I do not.I lie in bed for hours, staring at the ceiling, listening to the silence. The guards outside my door shift their weight every few minutes. Boots scraping against stone. Armor clinking. They are tired. Bored. Not paying attention.Good.I wait until the hallway goes completely quiet. Until the only sound is the wind rattling the windows and my own heart pounding in my chest. Then I move. The window is my only chance. The door has two guards. The hallway has more. But the window overlooks the east garden. If I can climb down, drop into the bushes, I can reach the outer wall. From there, the forest.I do not know what comes after the forest. But anything is better than here.I pull on my darkest dress. Tie my hair back. Stuff a small bag with bread and a bottle of water. Then I open the window.Cold air rushes in. It smells like rain. Like freedom.I look down. The drop is farther than I thought. Much farther.Do not look down. Just move.I swi
Cassius POVThe war room smells like old paper and older men.I sit at the head of the table. My counselors sit on both sides. The Grand Adviser sits at the opposite end. His face is smooth. Calm. Like still water hiding sharp rocks beneath.I do not trust him.But I cannot prove anything yet."Let us begin," I say.The room goes quiet.Elder Octavia speaks first. She is old. Older than my father would have been. Her voice is dry like autumn leaves."The werewolves are gathering at the border," she says. "Three packs. Maybe four. They are preparing for something.""Preparing for what?" I ask."War, my Lord. What else?"I lean back in my chair. Stare at the map spread across the table. Little wooden figures mark troop positions. Blue for us. Red for them.Too much red."How many soldiers?" I ask."Fifteen thousand. Maybe more.""And how many do we have?""Twelve thousand ready. Eight thousand in training.""Then we are outnumbered.""For now."The Grand Adviser clears his throat.Every
