The Air I Breathe

Sydney

I stayed out all day. I didn’t come home until the sun faded and the sky turned an inky, endless black dotted with stars.

Admittedly, I stayed at my office until nearly 10:00 PM just to piss Cosette off, thinking she’d be waiting by the door to cuff my ears even though she was the one who bullied me out of my own home this morning.

Being alone, thrust into a somewhat normal routine again, felt right. It felt good. I feel somewhat like myself again after a day working and several hours spent shifting and running through the woods.

But I also didn’t stop thinking about Sarah all day long. I replayed those memories she returned to me over and over again until the night we spent together after the ball was so clear I could taste the vanilla chapstick she was wearing and smell the floral perfume scenting her skin.

Now I’m home, walking through the garage door, and the house is quiet and dark

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Taking Down the Viper

SorenTwin Rivers is cast in darkness and flickering neon lights as I trudge beside Blake, our heads bent against a spray of slush. The streets are clear of ice but soaking wet, and my boots leave deep imprints in the rotten snow as I cross a street, Blake staying in step with me. My eyes are covered by my usual mask–a simple strip of dark fabric. My ball cap casts the rest of my face in shadow as we cut through an alley between two lively bars. We have to side-step between the crowd to gain access to the next street. Blake begins to don his gloves, but I stop him, shaking my head. “She needs to see you as you are. That’s part of the plan, remember?”He grits his teeth and slides the gloves back in his pocket. “Having second thoughts?”“No,” he rasps. It’s impossible to tell what he’s really thinking. His face is set in a mask of indifference as the city bleeds around us. Twin Rivers is a hotbed for nightlife. Bars and clubs rage even in the darkest hours of morning. A group of youn

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Exits and Entrances

MaeveMisty lingers nearby as Ginny, my midwife, rises from between my legs, her face cast in the shadow of the sunset sending golden and crimson streaks of light through the curtains. The snow is melting. Ice thaws on the windows. I relax my legs with a grimace, Misty coming to my side to help me back into a seated position. “So?” Misty asks as Ginny disposes of her gloves. “Is this happening?”“Slowly, but yes. She’s quickening now. Her contractions will grow stronger from her, but they’re still far enough apart that I believe we have some time. A day or so.”“A day?” I whine. Ginny and Misty give me mirrored looks of sympathy, but it’s obvious there’s nothing more that can be done. “Well, that means you have a full day to finally decide what her name is going to be,” Misty quips, shrugging a shoulder. “I’m leaning toward Misty, but I’m sure your Mom and Sarah would beg to differ.”I playfully narrow my eyes. “If she ever makes her arrival, I’ll give her a name. Until then, I’m g

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   The Mate Bond Snaps

MaeveI expected this to feel awkward. So much time has passed. We had each other for a single night, and then months went by. Should I have forgotten what his hands feel like? Should my body be tense and unyielding when he climbs next to me, carefully bracing himself with a hand to the mattress as he leans over to kiss my lips, my jaw, and down the slope of my neck while his free hand glides over my hip to my thigh? Instead, I melt into his touch. I drown in him. Every ache and pain fades and is instantly replaced by a dizzying sense of belonging and being beloved. It’s natural. It’s like touching and being touched by him is something I was built for, like he was made for me and I him. Yet, I’m not as agile as I was once. Moving around–being thrown this way and that way is obviously off the table, but Soren… knows what to do. “Oh!” I cry out, gripping the sheets when his mouth dips between my thighs, his arms snaking around my legs and pulling me down the mattress. My eyes flutter

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Marching Orders

MaeveGray morning sunlight spreads across the carpet as I pace the corridor outside of the library where a screaming match is taking place between Blake and Ryatt. Soren and my dad’s voices occasionally lift over the snarls and growls but otherwise blend with the chaos. They came back last night, and it’s been a mess, to say the least. I came out of Blake’s private suite to the sound of my mother’s frantic voice echoing through the halls where we collided in an embrace, and the first thing I asked was if Soren was still alive. And, he is. Thank the Goddess, and it sounds like he’s holding his own. I should be in the room. I know that, but this pain… I can’t work past it anymore. My entire body is in turmoil as the contractions I’ve been having off and on over the past two days grow closer and closer together but then slip away entirely, leaving me breathless and frustrated. Now, I’m stressed out, and all I want is a moment alone with Soren to make sure he’s okay and no one in my

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Meet the Parents

SorenA grand stone staircase funnels to the highest reaches of the cathedral-style foyer where the stained glass windows stretch to the highest rafters. This place is ancient. From the dawn of fucking time, I think. Shadows hug narrow passages leading off the foyer, but Blake knows exactly where to go, I guess, because he grabs my arms and tugs me to the left. I balk, ripping my arm out of his grasp. “Don’t touch me again,” I huff, smoothing the fabric of the rather fancy button down shirt I’ve been wearing most of the day. Jane brought me clothes and quickly disappeared again shortly after I left Blake’s office this morning to check on Maeve. Patton, too, has been missing all day, but judging by Jane’s slightly disheveled appearance, she’d been enjoying Patton’s skill set for hours at that point, I wasn’t going to interrupt them with questions… yet. Now, I might not have the opportunity to see my closest, and admittedly only, friend find true happiness in the form of a mate becaus

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Sorting Out Soren

SorenBlake’s suite, essentially a private apartment within the castle, is on the far eastern side of the palace. His view is of the more rural, affluent neighborhoods of Moonrise and the thick forest beyond–quieter and more secluded compared to Maeve’s suite overlooking the lake and city center. I take in the gray walls and modern furniture before turning to the man sipping a glass of scotch as the sun fades from view, the sunset broken by dark clouds promising another snowstorm, but it’s warmer today. Humid. I can almost taste the rain on the horizon. It’s nearly spring. I hope it’s a good summer. Maeve stares Blake down from the far side of the room, her eyes briefly flicking to mine before she clears her throat, “Well? What do you have to say for yourself?” She taps her foot impatiently, but Blake just looks her up and down before turning to me. “Patton didn’t have a tracker in his upper arm like you did. Misty checked. He’s clean, otherwise.” I grit my teeth, unsure what to
