The pain hit before I even understood what was happening to me.

It ripped through me like my whole body was being rebuilt from the inside, bone by bone, like something had been waiting years for permission and finally got it. I couldn't scream. My throat wasn't shaped right for it anymore. All I could do was drop to my knees on the marble floor while five hundred wolves watched me turn into something none of them had ever seen.

Part of me wanted to fight it. Some small, scared piece of me still wanted to be the girl in the pretty dress, the one who trained for years to control her shift, the one who never once let herself lose control in front of anyone. But that girl was already gone the moment Damian said those five words, and whatever was taking her place wasn't asking my permission.

My hands weren't hands. Golden fur pushed through my skin so fast it burned. My spine cracked and stretched, and somewhere in the middle of all that pain I heard Damian shout something, but I couldn't understand the words. Everything sounded far away, like I was underwater.

Then it stopped.

I stood up on four legs instead of two.

The hall was dead silent. Even the wolves who had been laughing at me a minute ago weren't laughing now. They were pressed against the walls, some of them shifting halfway into their own wolf forms out of pure fear, like their bodies wanted to run before their minds caught up.

I looked down at myself. My coat was gold, not the usual brown or grey or black I'd seen on every wolf in this kingdom my whole life. Gold like sunlight. My paws were bigger than a normal wolf's paws should be. I could feel muscle under my fur that had no business being there, not on someone who'd been called weak her entire life.

Weak. That word had followed me since I was a child, whispered by elders, murmured by pack members who thought I couldn't hear them. I used to believe it. Standing there on four massive paws with power humming through every part of me, I finally understood how wrong I'd been.

Damian took a step toward me. Just one step.

I let out a growl that didn't even sound like it came from me. It came from somewhere deeper, somewhere old, and it was loud enough that he actually stopped moving.

"Elena." He said my name like a question, like he wasn't sure it was still me in there.

I wasn't sure either.

Selene grabbed his arm. "Get back," she hissed. "Nobody knows what that thing is."

That thing. Twenty minutes ago I was his mate. Now I was a thing.

Something in me wanted to laugh, except wolves don't laugh, not in this body. All I could do was stand there shaking while my new instincts screamed at me to run, hide, get away from every single person in that hall who used to call themselves my pack.

So I did.

I turned and I ran.

I heard shouting behind me, guards yelling orders, Damian's voice cutting through all of it, but none of them could catch me. Not like this. My legs moved faster than anything I'd ever felt, faster than I even knew was possible, and within seconds I was through the hall doors and out into the cold night air, running through the palace gardens with the moon lighting up my new golden fur.

I didn't stop until the palace was far behind me and the only sound left was my own breathing and my paws hitting the dirt.

I collapsed at the edge of the forest, shifting back into my human body without even meaning to, like my wolf had decided I'd run far enough. I lay there in the grass, naked and shaking and completely alone, staring up at the same moon that had been shining down on my rejection ceremony less than an hour ago.

An hour ago I had a mate. A pack. A future I thought I understood. Now I had nothing except questions and a body that didn't feel like mine anymore. I kept waiting to wake up from this, to open my eyes back in my old room with my old life still intact, but the grass under me was real and the cold was real and none of this was going away just because I wanted it to.

My whole life I thought I understood what my grandmother meant by keeping our bloodline hidden. I thought it meant staying quiet, not standing out, not drawing attention. I never once thought it meant this.

I pressed my hands against my face and finally let myself cry, not because I lost Damian, but because I had no idea what I'd just become or what it meant for the rest of my life.

That's when I heard footsteps behind me.

I froze.

Nobody should have been able to track me that fast. I ran for miles. Whoever this was, they weren't a normal wolf, and they definitely weren't from Damian's pack, because I would have smelled them coming from the palace.

"You can stop hiding," a man's voice said. Calm. Almost amused. "I already know what you are."

I turned around slowly, pulling my knees up to cover myself, my whole body still trembling from the shift.

A man stood at the edge of the trees, wearing all black, watching me with eyes that glowed faintly gold in the moonlight. The same gold my fur had been minutes ago.

"That's not possible," I whispered. "There's no one else like me. My grandmother said I was the last."

He smiled, but it wasn't a friendly smile. It was the smile of someone who had been waiting a very long time for this exact moment.

"Your grandmother lied to you," he said. "There's an entire bloodline of us. And you, little Luna, just told every wolf kingdom on this continent that you're still alive."

My whole body went cold, colder than the night air around me. An entire bloodline. That meant everything I thought I knew about myself, everything I'd built my life around, was built on a lie someone told me to keep me safe. I wanted to be angry at my grandmother for it, but some part of me understood. She'd been trying to protect me from exactly this moment, and it hadn't worked anyway.

Behind him, more shapes stepped out of the trees. Not wolves. Something else, something with the same golden eyes, watching me the way you'd watch something you'd been hunting for years and finally caught.

I tried to stand and run again, but my legs gave out from exhaustion.

The man crouched down in front of me, tilting his head like he was studying something rare and valuable.

"Don't worry," he said softly. "We're not here to hurt you."

Then his smile changed into something colder.

"We're here to take you home."

It wasn't Damian. It was Garrick, his beta, the man who used to train beside him every morning, the man who stood two steps behind him at the rejection ceremony without saying a single word to stop it."Stay back," Kael said, moving in front of me, but Garrick raised both hands slowly, showing he wasn't holding a weapon."I'm not here to fight you," Garrick said. "I'm here because Damian doesn't know I left the palace."That stopped me cold. My legs were still shaking from the run, my mind still spinning from Vaughn and Ilsa, and now this, another piece of Damian's world showing up uninvited. "What does that mean."Garrick's eyes flicked to Renata, then back to me, like he was deciding how much he could actually say out loud. "It means I've been watching the council for years, waiting for proof of what they did to your family. Tonight, when Renata said Damian's father was involved, something in me finally clicked into place.""Why should we believe a word out of your mouth," Kael said

We were here first," Vaughn snapped, blood dripping from a cut above his eyebrow. "Back off, Draven scum." The woman in front of me didn't even look at him. Her eyes stayed locked on mine, calm in a way that scared me more than Vaughn's whole crew ever did. "I don't take orders from Thorne's leftovers," she said. "My name is Ilsa. I work for Selene." My stomach turned at the name. "Of course you do." "Selene wants you brought in alive," Ilsa said. "Untouched. She was very specific about that part." "Funny," I said. "Since she looked pretty happy watching Damian humiliate me." Something flickered in Ilsa's expression, gone almost as fast as it appeared. "Selene doesn't do anything without a reason. You'll understand that soon enough." Kael limped closer to me, one arm pressed against his ribs, blood soaking through his sleeve. "Elena, whatever happens, don't go with either of them." "That's cute," Vaughn said. "Except you're not really in a position to be giving orders right no

A man stepped out from behind the trees, and the second I saw his face, Kael went rigid beside me like he'd seen a ghost."You," Kael said. Just one word, but it came out low and cold, nothing like the calm voice I'd gotten used to over the last two days. The man smiled like he'd been waiting for that reaction. "Kael. It's been a long time."I looked between them, my heart still pounding from the run, from Damian's voice still echoing somewhere behind us in the trees. "You know him."Kael didn't answer right away. That silence told me more than any answer could have. The stranger wore no colors I recognized, no crest, nothing that marked him as belonging to any kingdom I knew. But four more men stepped out behind him, all watching us the same careful way hunters watch something they've already decided is theirs. My legs were still shaking from the run, from everything with Damian just minutes ago, and now this. It felt like the whole night was just one threat after another, no room to

  • The Alpha King's Forgotten Luna   Chapter 5: Face to Face

"Elena!"Hearing him say my name like that, desperate, scared, nothing like the cold voice from the rejection ceremony, made me freeze mid step even though every part of me was screaming to keep running.I turned around before I could stop myself.Damian stood at the edge of the clearing, still in the same black clothes from the ceremony, his men fanned out behind him. He looked different than I remembered from just a day ago. Tired. Almost unsteady on his feet, like he hadn't slept either. Some small, stupid part of me almost felt sorry for him. I hated that part of me right then."Elena." He said my name again, softer this time."Don't," Kael said beside me, his hand tightening around my arm. "We keep moving.""Wait," I said, pulling free.Every instinct in me screamed to run, but something else, something stubborn and angry, wanted answers more than it wanted safety. Around us, Damian's men stood in a loose half circle, hands resting near their weapons but not drawing them, like th

  • The Alpha King's Forgotten Luna   Chapter 4: The Truth About My Mother

"Your mother didn't just die. She was murdered because of what she could do."I sat up so fast the blanket fell off my shoulders. Morning light was already cutting through the gaps in the tent, and the old woman was sitting across from me like she'd been waiting there for hours, maybe all night. My heart was already pounding before she said another word."I thought we were doing this later," I said."You didn't sleep much. I could hear you tossing from outside." She said it plainly, not unkind, just honest. "I'm Renata. I led what's left of this camp for almost twenty years. And I owe your mother more than I can ever repay her for, so I'm not going to make you wait any longer than I have to."I pulled my knees up to my chest, still wrapped in Marisol's borrowed cloak, and waited. Part of me wanted to stop her before she said another word. The other part of me had been waiting my whole life for someone to tell me the truth."Your mother's name was Adira," Renata said. "She was the stro

  • The Alpha King's Forgotten Luna   Chapter 3: Take Me Home

"We're here to take you home."Home. I almost laughed at that word. An hour ago home meant a palace with Damian's name on the gates. Now some stranger with glowing eyes was standing in front of me like home was something he could just hand me back."I don't even know you," I said, pulling my knees tighter against my chest. The man in black straightened up and looked back at the others standing behind him. There were five of them. Maybe six. All watching me with the same gold eyes like they were waiting to see what I would do next."My name is Kael," he said. "And you have every right not to trust me. But you're weak right now and it's cold and you can barely stand. So either you come with us or you sit here until Damian's guards find you first."That got me moving.I forced myself up on shaky legs. My whole body still felt raw from the shift, like every muscle had been stretched too far and snapped back too fast. My skin was still cold from the night air and my hair was tangled with l
