Chapter 5: might be a realization

.

“Do you believe me now? That I’m your mate?.” I whispered allowing a stray tear to fall down my eye.

“Do you really think that I would readily believe you to be my mate?.” He asks, his voice low as it sends chills down my spine.

“B-But you just—.”

“Maria!.”

He called out a name and the old woman who had been watching since came forward and bowed before him a total 90 degree.

“You can take her. Add her to your entourage.” He says finally removing his hand from my face as he lifts himself up to stand.

“Yes your honor.” She replies still not lifting her face up.

His hand which had been serving me warmth was gone and that made me cold.

“No! Wait.” I argue.

Abruptly, and not wanting him to leave, I grab his hand pulling him back to face me and his eyes widen out of shock not expecting me to do that.

“What more proof do you need again?!” I asserted out of confidence. “You did this!.” I let go of his hand to point at my now smooth face and directing the finger to point back at his own scarred face. “See? You took my scar! Only mates take each other scars. Isn’t that enough for you?.” I asked frantically desperate for him to believe me.

I didn’t want to get sent to whatever entourage that the old lady had. I don’t want that. I don’t know what an entourage here his castle entails but I’m sure nobody would want that ...

I needed him to believe me...

But the way he stared at me expressionless...

I knew he didn’t believe me..

But why?

“Why won’t you believe me?.” I whispered, hurt forming in my voice as I stared back at him.

“I healed you.” He says back to me simply. “Because I can.”

Reaching out, he removed my hand from his and dropped it. I stared at him stunned as he stood up straight and turned around walking away.

“You can’t leave yet! You need to believe me!.” I yelled out desperately for him to hear me but he walked straight ahead not showing any emotion to the pain of someone shouting out loud.

Realizing that he wasn’t going to answer me, I let the few tears forming a pool in my eyes fall.

My mate just walked out on me!

Our bond aches as my omega was feeling distraught, confused and pained all in one.

The guard behind me who had attacked me mercilessly forced me to stand up yanking me by my right hand. I lifelessly let him drag me to my feet as I stared at the open space in which the King has just walked through.

He really left ...

“Let her be, Zedd.” ‘Maria’, the old woman finally spoke lifting her head to look at me.

The guard did so reluctantly and walked back to standing in a position few meters away from us.

“You must be tired, come.” Maria stretched her hand out towards me.

My eyes were still focused on the large empty hallway.

Perhaps if I look hard enough then my alpha might come to save me, who knows?

“Come, my child.” She reaches out for my palm instead and places her hand in mine softly dragging me away.

“What if he comes back and sees I’m not waiting for him?.” I ask afraid to hear the a answer.

Maria pats my palm that’s in hers as she answers me. “He won’t see because he’s not coming back.”

“Why not?.” My lips a blubbering mess as I fight hard not to burst into tears as we walk together through the large silent hallways. “An alpha doesn’t leave his fated like that, I’m his.” I say yet again just not confident this time around.

Alpha Mattel leaving me like that makes me rethink if he’s actually my mate or not.

“You wouldn’t understand.” The old woman says.

And I don’t ask any questions again after that.

*KING MATTEL POV*

In the quiet study room of the castle, King Mattel felt a mix of strong emotions. The flickering candlelight made shadows move on the walls as he walked around, feeling overwhelmed by his feelings.

With each step, the sound echoed in the quiet room, matching the beating of his heart. His mind raced with thoughts of the prophecy that had troubled him for a long time, its words stuck in his mind like an inescapable curse.

Mattel's hands shook as he reached for the old scroll on his desk, its paper yellow with age. He unrolled it slowly, as if he was afraid to face what it said. The words seemed to tease him as he read them again, their meaning unclear and mysterious.

"The cursed alpha shall find his mate, but she shall loathe him with every fiber of her being. Only through intimate contact with his mate shall the curse be lifted, and the alpha shall find redemption in her embrace."

“So basically she’s to hate me the moment she meets me.” Mattel muttered to himself thinking.

Mattel's brow furrowed in frustration as he struggled to decipher the prophecy's message.

He groaned sitting back on the chair in his study room.

How could he be expected to find redemption in the arms of a woman who despised him?

Mattel sat back thinking of the omega’s statements. Her words were like spitfire and that was indeed the first time that someone had said something that spite him.

Her eyes when she started talking were entrancing, it was hard to look away from her. And her lips …

Mattel wondered where she had been all this while and why he had never come across her before.

Just thinking about her made him hard.

And that has never been possible before.

Mattel’s mind consumed with a maddening desire that threatened to overwhelm him. His chest heaved with each breath, his heart pounding furiously against his ribcage. The weight of his arousal bore down upon him like a suffocating blanket, leaving him dizzy and disoriented.

He staggered to his desk and sank into the ornate chair, his hands trembling as he thought of a ‘what if’.

What if she was the one this time?

Mattel has been presented more than 50 girls a year since he became king and he had never felt attraction to any one of them till today.

He didn’t just feel attraction towards her, he was also curious of what effect she was going to have on him too.

He rested back on the chair closing his eyes.

Regina.

She had claimed to be his too much for him not to believe her. And even if he wanted to, how would he know that she was telling the truth?
