Chapter 3 Walking Away in Blood

Author: Shearheart
I had just started to get up and move away from the lights when Rosalind approached me, carrying two glasses of fruit wine. She stopped in front of me, her teasing gaze sweeping over me from head to toe. "Aveline, why are you so bundled up? I've never seen you dressed like this before."

She held out one of the glasses, but I did not take it.

Rosalind did not seem embarrassed in the slightest. Instead, she raised her phone, her eyes suddenly lighting up. "Oh, the angle and atmosphere from where you're sitting right now are actually perfect. Let me take a picture of you to remember the occasion."

Before I could answer, she stepped closer and pointed her camera directly at me. "Don't move. Just stay exactly like that."

The next second, the flash suddenly went off.

A blinding burst of white light struck my face, and an intense, searing pain erupted across my skin. I let out a muffled groan and instinctively raised my hand to block her phone.

My hand had not even come close to touching her when Rosalind suddenly let out an exaggerated scream.

She deliberately threw herself backward, landing heavily on the ground as the fruit wine in her hands spilled everywhere.

She frowned and clutched her lower back, her voice trembling with tears. "Ow, my back! I think I pulled something! Aveline, why did you push me?"

Just then, Stephen approached me carrying a plate of the pastries I loved, his expression gentle. But the second he saw what had happened, he tossed the pastries aside and rushed over. "Rosalind! Are you okay?"

He immediately crouched down to help her. Then he looked at me, and fury instantly blazed in his eyes. Without even thinking, he shoved me away with all his strength. "Aveline, have you lost your mind?"

I was already weak and burning with a high fever. I could not withstand the force of his shove. My body lurched backward, and I crashed hard into one of the scorching floodlights.

The blistering-hot bulb burned straight through my robe. The blisters on my back, which had not yet healed, burst instantly. Blood and oozing fluid soaked through the fabric, leaving a large smear of blood across the ground. Agony tore through my entire body. I collapsed onto the floor, trembling uncontrollably.

The surrounding pack members heard the commotion and immediately gathered around us. Voices erupted from every direction.

"Why is there so much blood on the ground?"

"Could she have some kind of strange disease? No wonder she's wrapped herself up like that!"

"Ms. Warwick was only kindly trying to take her picture, and she actually attacked her! She's far more vicious than I thought!"

When Stephen saw the blood spreading beneath me, shock and a flicker of regret flashed through his eyes. He reached out as if to pull me up, but Rosalind quickly moved into his arms, her eyes red as she spoke timidly. "Stephen, I'm scared. I only wanted to take a picture of Aveline. I don't know why she suddenly attacked me…"

She lowered her eyes, her voice filled with hurt. "I know Aveline has never liked me, but I never thought she would go this far just to hurt me."

Instantly, the brief hesitation in Stephen's eyes vanished. His brows drew tightly together as he looked at me with undisguised disappointment. "It's nighttime now. There isn't any sunlight. How much longer are you going to keep putting on this pathetic act? Going this far to set all of this up is beneath you! The Aveline I knew was never like this. What has become of you? Get out of here. Don't stay and embarrass the entire pack!"

The entire time, not once had he asked whether I was in pain.

All around me, the pack members whispered and gossiped. Their scrutinizing, contemptuous gazes felt like needles digging into my skin, and a deep chill seeped into the very depths of my heart.

I clenched my back teeth so hard that the metallic taste of blood spread through my mouth.

But I did not shed a single tear. Using every ounce of strength I had left, I slowly pushed myself up from the pool of blood.

My heart had gone completely cold. Dragging my bloodied, mangled body behind me, I walked away from the noisy, bustling celebration banquet one step at a time, alone.

The moment Stephen saw me give another man such a relaxed, genuine smile, uncontrollable jealousy burned through him. He strode over and snatched the cloth bag from my arms. The brand-new lightproof cloak inside fell heavily to the ground, and he planted his foot squarely on the fabric."Stay away from her!" Stephen's chest heaved violently, his bloodshot eyes fixed on Jasper. "She's mine!"Jasper's brows drew tightly together. He had barely taken a step forward when I reached out and stopped him.The cloak on the ground already bore the imprint of Stephen's shoe.I stood there quietly and looked at Stephen, who had completely lost control of his emotions. Inside, I felt nothing but calm. "When are you finally going to understand that you never loved me for who I was? What you were obsessed with was the sense of accomplishment you got from being an Alpha who could save someone vulnerable."Having a cloak made for me was nothing more than you indulging in your own self-righteousnes

A few days later, Rosalind found her way here. After Stephen withdrew all protection, the pack members who had once surrounded her and fawned over her began avoiding her like the plague. Rumors and hostility followed her everywhere, and she no longer had a place in the pack. After days of wandering in misery looking utterly disheveled, she finally caught up with Stephen at the entrance to the town. Before he could walk away, she lunged forward and clutched both hands around his pant leg."You can't just dump everything on me and walk away!" Rosalind's voice was hoarse, her eyes filled with despair. "You said letting her face sunlight in moderation would be good for her! I was only doing what you wanted! So why are you putting all the blame on me now? I can't survive in the pack anymore!"Stephen looked down at the disheveled she-wolf on the ground without a trace of pity. In his eyes, Rosalind had long since lost whatever value she once had.He raised his leg and kicked her away w

With a creak, the gate opened. My mother stood there holding a basin of black, herb-infused water left over from washing fresh medicinal herbs. Without saying a word, she lifted the entire basin and dumped it straight over Stephen's head.Water splashed everywhere. His expensive suit was drenched from head to toe, with several soggy herb leaves clinging to his shoulders."Take your things and get the hell away from here!" My mother pointed furiously at his face. "When my daughter was lying in the critical-care ward, and we received two separate notices that she was in critical condition, where was your money and your power? And now you come running here pretending to be some kind of savior?"Even if my daughter and I have to struggle here for the rest of our lives, even if we have to beg on the streets for food, we will never take a single cent from you!"The wooden door slammed shut, closing within inches of his nose.Stephen's attempt to win us over with money had failed. The town was shrouded in dense fog year-round, making it difficult for sunlight to penetrate the clouds. To ordinary people, the climate was cold and oppressive, but for a hybrid like me who feared sunlight, it was a rare place where I could finally live in peace. My mother and I spent our last savings to rent a storefront with a small courtyard and opened a little herbal goods shop that operated only in the evenings and at night. Here, I no longer had to wrap myself in a heavy sun-protective cloak every waking moment. When the fog rolled in at dusk, I could put on a pretty dress and stroll freely through town, heading to the market to buy supplies. I no longer had to constantly worry about avoiding sunlight or anyone in the pack's opinions either. Life was peaceful and carefree, and it felt as though I had finally found myself again. That night, the bell hanging above the shop door jingled, and a tall figure appeared in the doorway.Stephen had grown so thin that his cheekbones

Stephen snapped back to reality. He threw himself into his SUV, floored the gas, and sped straight to the healing center. He stormed into the lobby and went straight to the front desk. "Pull up Aveline Steinberg's medical records. Do it now. Immediately!"The receptionist was startled by his frantic appearance and hurriedly pulled up the records in the system. "Alpha, Ms. Aveline Steinberg has already left. She left in a great hurry. Her wounds hadn't fully healed yet, and the scars were still actively forming."Stephen planted both hands on the counter. "Where did she go?""We don't know. Her mother handled the discharge paperwork. She only said they wanted to find somewhere with less sunlight and settle down there." The receptionist sighed helplessly. "The massive medical bill and the pack's expulsion left them with no choice but to flee. We don't know where they went either."Stephen staggered backward two steps, every trace of color draining from his face.…For more than
