Chapter 2 Under the Floodlights

Shearheart
The next day at noon, Stephen came to see me, carrying nothing more than an ordinary jar of herbal ointment.

When he saw me wrapped in layers of gauze from head to toe, his eyes widened slightly. Surprise and concern flashed through his eyes, but as if remembering something, he suppressed those emotions almost instantly.

"Mrs. Steinberg is making a mountain out of a molehill," he said, his tone dismissive. "You only have a few superficial burns. Why did she have you wrapped up like this?"

He walked over to the bed and tried to stroke my head. But I turned my head away, avoiding his touch.

His hand froze in midair, and his expression immediately hardened. "Aveline, there has to be a limit to your temper. Rosalind may have gone about it a little too directly, but she was only trying to help you. Not only did you refuse to appreciate it, you even had Mrs. Steinberg call and chew me out."

He set the jar of herbal ointment heavily on the bedside table. "You're coming to the celebration banquet tonight. Rosalind has only just joined the pack, and she doesn't know many pack members yet. If you refuse to show her this much courtesy, everyone in the pack will think you're narrow-minded. Just make an appearance. Don't make things difficult for me."

I quietly stared at the werewolf in front of me—the Alpha who had once cherished me as though I were the most precious thing in the world.

The burns covering my body continued to stab with pain, and even breathing took effort. I used my last strength to speak my mind. "Stephen, let's end this."

Stephen's expression darkened instantly. "What did you just say? Did you hear yourself, Aveline? Are you threatening me with a breakup over a few superficial burns? I can't spend my entire life revolving around your hybrid weakness. If you're going to be this sensitive and fragile all the time, how long do you expect anyone to keep accommodating you?"

"It wasn't a threat." My voice was faint, and I instinctively tried to move away. But he had already lost all patience. He stepped forward and seized my injured wrist.

"Let go… It hurts."

A bolt of agony shot straight through my head. My vision went black, and my legs gave out beneath me. I collapsed onto the floor, cold sweat instantly soaking through my back.

However, he did not loosen his grip in the slightest. Looking down at me sprawled helplessly on the floor, he said coldly, "Suck it up! You're going to that celebration banquet tonight, whether you want to or not. I have never indulged anyone's bad temper. Even if I have to drag you there by force, I'm taking you to apologize to Rosalind."

I had no strength left to resist. I could only let him change me into a loose-fitting, high-collared robe. But even if the fabric looked loose enough, whenever it brushed against my raw, damaged skin, the pain still felt unbearable.

…

On the way to the banquet, I curled up in the back seat, my face deathly pale. Stephen sat beside me, yet he never once asked how I was feeling.

The celebration banquet was being held in an outdoor courtyard.

There was no sunlight at night, but to create the right atmosphere, the organizers had installed numerous powerful floodlights around the venue. The lights emitted intense ultraviolet radiation, and to me, the damage was no different from standing beneath the midday sun.

Three years ago, when Stephen had pursued me, he had carefully learned every restriction and vulnerability caused by my unusual physiology. He could not have been unaware, yet his expression remained cold and hard.

He half dragged, half hauled me toward the area where the floodlights were most concentrated, then forced me down into a chair. "Sit here quietly and reflect on what you did. Don't cause any more trouble. I'm going over to accompany Rosalind through the banquet proceedings."

With that, he turned and strode away.

The harsh lights struck my skin like red-hot irons, searing my flesh over and over again. Within seconds, the burning pain had erupted across my entire body once more.

The moment Stephen saw me give another man such a relaxed, genuine smile, uncontrollable jealousy burned through him. He strode over and snatched the cloth bag from my arms. The brand-new lightproof cloak inside fell heavily to the ground, and he planted his foot squarely on the fabric."Stay away from her!" Stephen's chest heaved violently, his bloodshot eyes fixed on Jasper. "She's mine!"Jasper's brows drew tightly together. He had barely taken a step forward when I reached out and stopped him.The cloak on the ground already bore the imprint of Stephen's shoe.I stood there quietly and looked at Stephen, who had completely lost control of his emotions. Inside, I felt nothing but calm. "When are you finally going to understand that you never loved me for who I was? What you were obsessed with was the sense of accomplishment you got from being an Alpha who could save someone vulnerable."Having a cloak made for me was nothing more than you indulging in your own self-righteousnes

A few days later, Rosalind found her way here. After Stephen withdrew all protection, the pack members who had once surrounded her and fawned over her began avoiding her like the plague. Rumors and hostility followed her everywhere, and she no longer had a place in the pack. After days of wandering in misery looking utterly disheveled, she finally caught up with Stephen at the entrance to the town. Before he could walk away, she lunged forward and clutched both hands around his pant leg."You can't just dump everything on me and walk away!" Rosalind's voice was hoarse, her eyes filled with despair. "You said letting her face sunlight in moderation would be good for her! I was only doing what you wanted! So why are you putting all the blame on me now? I can't survive in the pack anymore!"Stephen looked down at the disheveled she-wolf on the ground without a trace of pity. In his eyes, Rosalind had long since lost whatever value she once had.He raised his leg and kicked her away w

With a creak, the gate opened. My mother stood there holding a basin of black, herb-infused water left over from washing fresh medicinal herbs. Without saying a word, she lifted the entire basin and dumped it straight over Stephen's head.Water splashed everywhere. His expensive suit was drenched from head to toe, with several soggy herb leaves clinging to his shoulders."Take your things and get the hell away from here!" My mother pointed furiously at his face. "When my daughter was lying in the critical-care ward, and we received two separate notices that she was in critical condition, where was your money and your power? And now you come running here pretending to be some kind of savior?"Even if my daughter and I have to struggle here for the rest of our lives, even if we have to beg on the streets for food, we will never take a single cent from you!"The wooden door slammed shut, closing within inches of his nose.Stephen's attempt to win us over with money had failed. The town was shrouded in dense fog year-round, making it difficult for sunlight to penetrate the clouds. To ordinary people, the climate was cold and oppressive, but for a hybrid like me who feared sunlight, it was a rare place where I could finally live in peace. My mother and I spent our last savings to rent a storefront with a small courtyard and opened a little herbal goods shop that operated only in the evenings and at night. Here, I no longer had to wrap myself in a heavy sun-protective cloak every waking moment. When the fog rolled in at dusk, I could put on a pretty dress and stroll freely through town, heading to the market to buy supplies. I no longer had to constantly worry about avoiding sunlight or anyone in the pack's opinions either. Life was peaceful and carefree, and it felt as though I had finally found myself again. That night, the bell hanging above the shop door jingled, and a tall figure appeared in the doorway.Stephen had grown so thin that his cheekbones

Stephen snapped back to reality. He threw himself into his SUV, floored the gas, and sped straight to the healing center. He stormed into the lobby and went straight to the front desk. "Pull up Aveline Steinberg's medical records. Do it now. Immediately!"The receptionist was startled by his frantic appearance and hurriedly pulled up the records in the system. "Alpha, Ms. Aveline Steinberg has already left. She left in a great hurry. Her wounds hadn't fully healed yet, and the scars were still actively forming."Stephen planted both hands on the counter. "Where did she go?""We don't know. Her mother handled the discharge paperwork. She only said they wanted to find somewhere with less sunlight and settle down there." The receptionist sighed helplessly. "The massive medical bill and the pack's expulsion left them with no choice but to flee. We don't know where they went either."Stephen staggered backward two steps, every trace of color draining from his face.…For more than
