Chapter 1

ARIA'S POV

Three months pregnant, and I couldn't stop noticing the way Caelan looked at me.

Not with love. Not anymore. Or at least, not only with love.

Now there was something else in his eyes. Something that made my skin prickle with unease.

Suspicion.

"You need to eat more," he said, watching me push food around my plate at breakfast. "The baby needs nutrition."

"I'm eating." I forced down another bite of eggs that tasted like ash. "Morning sickness is just worse today."

"Mira sai

ARIA'S POVDarius explained it simply.A blood acknowledgment. Old magic, older than the Council, older than most of the laws Magnus was using against us. Caelan's blood and mine, bound together before witnesses, formalizing what the Council vote had only approximated.Under the oldest wolf law still on record, it made me Luna in a way no Council could revoke."What does it involve?" I asked."A cut. Small. Palm or wrist, your choice. Your blood mixed with Caelan's. Words spoken before witnesses." Darius kept it factual. "Takes maybe ten minutes. The binding is permanent.""Permanent how?""Scent. It changes both of yours slightly. Marks you as bound in a way wolves can read instinctively." He paused. "It's not painful beyond the cut itself. And it won't affect Kael."I looked at Caelan. He was watching me with the careful expression he used when he'd already formed an opinion but was genuinely trying not to push it on me."What do you want?" I asked him directly."I want whatever you

CAELAN'S POVShe slept for six hours.I didn't sleep at all.I sat in the chair beside the bed with the baby on my chest and watched the door and tried to organize everything Silas had told us into something I could work with strategically instead of just react to emotionally. It wasn't going well. The baby helped. Surprisingly. Having something that small and that warm against my chest made the thinking slower and quieter, which was apparently what I needed. Every time my mind went somewhere dark the baby would shift or make a sound and pull me back to the room. To the present. To what was actually in front of me.Aria had named her Kael. Not a question, not a discussion. She'd said it once, quietly, looking at the baby's face, and it had settled into place like it had always been there. I hadn't argued. It was the right name. Short and strong and carrying something older in it that I couldn't quite name.Kael slept on my chest and breathed with the particular concentration of someon

ARIA'S POVThe fire crackled. Nobody spoke.I looked at Silas across the room and tried to find the lie in his face. The angle. The calculation underneath the words.I couldn't find it.That scared me more than if I had."My mother was human," I said. "I grew up in the slave pens. Born there. Registered as human property from birth.""Yes. Because the Council registered her as human when they took her." Silas's voice was even. "It was easier than explaining what she was. Easier than acknowledging they'd stolen a wolf from her mate and stripped her of everything that proved her heritage." He paused. "When she fell pregnant with you, she was already registered as a breeder. You were registered the same way. Human. Property. It was already done before you took your first breath.""Why would they take her? If she was wolf—""Because of what her bloodline carried." He leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "Sera came from a line that predated the Moon Goddess's curse. Before the Collapse. Be

CAELAN'S POVTwo hours on horseback with a newborn and a woman who'd given birth an hour ago.I kept telling myself it was survivable. That Aria was strong. That the baby was strong. That we just needed to reach Silas's compound and everything else could wait.I kept not quite believing it.Aria rode in front of me, the baby wrapped against her chest, my arms bracketing her on both sides. She hadn't complained once. Hadn't asked to stop. Just sat upright and breathed and kept her eyes on the road ahead with the particular focus of someone who had decided that falling apart was scheduled for later.Mira rode on her left, close enough to reach her if something changed.Silas led. Far enough ahead to give us space, close enough to redirect if patrols appeared on the road.Renn had peeled off at the last fork, heading east to warn the underground network that Magnus would likely come for Lysandra's contacts next. She'd gripped my arm before she left and said nothing, which somehow communi

ARIA'S POVEverything narrowed. The farmhouse. The blanket beneath me. Mira's voice, steady and low, telling me what to do and when. Caelan's hand, which I was probably breaking, and which he didn't mention once. The pain was nothing like I'd expected. Not sharp. Not dramatic. Just enormous. Like my whole body had decided it had one job and everything else, fear and cold and the smoke on the southern road, had been filed away for later."Don't fight it," Mira said. "Let it move through you.""Easy for you to say.""I know. Do it anyway."Caelan said nothing. Just stayed exactly where he was, solid and present, his thumb moving in slow circles on the back of my hand. I focused on that when the contractions peaked. That small movement. Proof he was still there.Renn had gone quiet by the window. Watching the road, watching outside, watching everywhere except the corner where I was falling apart and being put back together in the same breath.Time stopped making sense. At some point the

CAELAN'S POVI was at the door before Renn finished the sentence. She caught my arm. "One rider. Moving slow. That's not a patrol and it's not someone hunting.""Then what is it?"She looked out the window again. "Someone who wants to be seen."That was worse.A patrol you could fight. Someone who wanted to be seen was making a point. Announcing themselves before they arrived because they already knew you couldn't do anything about it.I knew one person who operated that way."Stay with her," I told Renn, and went outside. The morning was pale and cold, frost on the grass, the sky the flat white of a day that hadn't decided what it wanted to be yet. The rider came up the track at a walk, hood down, both hands visible on the reins.Silas.He looked the same as I remembered. Lean, unhurried, the kind of man who'd learned early that stillness was more threatening than movement. He stopped his horse ten feet from me and looked at the farmhouse, then at my face, then at the blood showing t

**ARIA'S POV** The man's eyes widened in terror. I watched through the window as he straightened slowly, his face drained of color even in the dim light.
