Lacey and Julien rode the rest of the way in silence. On the way, Lacey wondered what had happened to him to make him so hard and devoid of love. Although she had caught glimpses of his capacity for tenderness, she was sure that a woman had broken his heart, or maybe something else had happened to harden his heart.

But she quickly pushed the thought aside when they turned left onto a narrow road lined with trees and his mansion came into view. Lacey was surprised to see that it wasn't a mansion at all… but a castle. And it was huge! Much bigger than her stepfather's mansion. She wondered how Julien could afford such extravagance. But when you are nearly immortal and invest wisely, you can accumulate a lot of wealth.

"Wow," Lacey said as the limo pulled to a stop in front of the castle. The stone walls were light gray, glistening in the sunlight, and a lush forest surrounded it. "This is gorgeous!" Her wolf itched to explore the surrounding forest, pleased with the amount of land to run and hunt.

Julien nodded, smiling. "Come along and I'll give you a tour."

Lacey was happy that he was now speaking to her in a civil tone, at least. Her positive remarks about the castle must have pleased him. For once, she did something right, not that she cared, but at least it may make her life here easier.

"So, where's our room?" Lacey looked over the castle, clearly intrigued.

Julien squinted and pointed up high. "You see the turret to the left?"

"Yes," she replied, excited.

"And that little window?"

"Yes." Her enthusiasm waned.

"That is your room." Julien smirked, gauging her reaction. It was clear that he found some sick pleasure in tormenting her.

The redheaded woman chuckled.

"I thought that we were to share a room," Lacey said without thinking. Actually, she was glad she wouldn't have to share a room with this overbearing beast.

Julien shook his head. "No. Not until we're married."

The redhead burst out laughing at Lacey. "He's not your mate yet!"

"Scarlett!" Julien growled.

Lacey scrunched up her nose, sick of the antics of this woman. "Who the h*ll do you think you are, talking to me that way?"

Scarlett stepped up to Lacey, nose to nose. "I am his Beta. And you are nothing… yet."

But Lacey wasn't about to back down. "I suggest you take a step back. I am soon to be the Alpha Queen and you will treat me as such."

Scarlett smirked, placing her hands on her hips. "Not if I can help it."

"Scar!" Julien yelled, then he turned to face Lacey. "Actually, you are to respect her," Julien said, stepping between them.

Lacey smirked, shaking her head. "She'll get no respect from me unless she respects me as the future Alpha Queen and your mate first."

Julien pulled her hair back, nearly breaking her neck again as the redhead smirked. "Actually, you will respect her… because I said so."

"Okay...." Lacey said, trying to pull free. "Are you sleeping with her?"

"No, she is my second in command." Julien shook his head and released her, throwing her toward the redhead. "This is Scar, short for Scarlett. She's been with me for a while now and you will give her the respect she deserves." Then he looked at Scar. "And you will accept Lacey as my future mate and Alpha Queen."

One corner of Scar's lip curled into a snarl, but she said nothing.

Lacey's eyes met his as she took a step closer to him. "She will get my respect when she earns it. Not before."

Scar growled, her eyes turning a bright red, and Lacey's wolf seethed for the kill, ready to take her on. But Julien held up a hand, stopping them both.

He stepped up close to Lacey again. "You will respect her, and you will do as I say." He smirked. "She's not going anywhere."

Lacey's eyes narrowed. "Then why didn't you choose her as your mate instead of me?"

Suddenly, a short young woman came out of the castle, obviously having heard the exchange. "Welcome home, sire."

Lacey laughed, shaking her head. So, he fancied himself the Lord of the Manor, huh? Okay... unless he really was that old. But then again, he didn't look a day over twenty-five, twenty-eight tops. But it could be possible.

Julien growled, his eyes flaring a bright gold as he faced Lacey. "Gwen is your maid. She will give you a tour of the castle and will show you to your room. Dress for dinner. We eat promptly at eight."

"I thought you were going to give me a tour," Lacey observed.

"Change of plans." Then he walked purposefully toward the castle, leaving Lacey alone with Scar.

"Stay out of my way." Scar smirked. "You're not his mate yet."

Lacey took a step closer to her. "And neither are you."

Scar snarled, and then walked purposefully into the castle.

"Ugg!" Lacey balled her fists at her sides. "They are so infuriating!"

"Hello." Gwen cautiously approached her, probably wondering if she was going to be as cruel as her master. "My name's Gwen. I'll be your maid."

Lacey forced herself to stop shaking, making an effort to calm down. After all, Gwen seemed nice enough. It wasn't her fault that her master was a jerk. But then again, the jerk was her future mate.

"Hello." Lacey forced a smile. "My name's Lacey Taregon."

Gwen bobbed a slight curtsy. "Yes, Princess. It's nice to meet you."

Lacey laughed despite herself. "Please. Don't call me princess. You can call me Lacey. In private, at least."

"Yes, Princ... er... Lacey," Gwen replied, appearing to relax a bit. "If you would be so kind as to follow me, I'll give you a tour of the castle."

Lacey nodded. "Thank you. That's very kind of you." As she followed the petite blonde girl into the castle, Lacey wondered what she had gotten herself in to... for the hundredth time.

One Year Later...."Ready?" Lacey's mother asked, smiling proudly as she looked into Lacey's eyes. After the war Between the Packs, Lacey had offered to let her mother stay with her, but now that Camari was truly free to do as she pleased, she had decided to become a member of The Shadow Pack, Arkin's pack. Lacey was glad that her mother and Arkin had found one another again... after all these years. And it was strange. Thorn and Camari had been worried about the other dying if one left, but standing before her now, Camari was no worse for wear. Lacey guessed that it was because the Mating Bond between them had already faded years ago. There had been too much water under the bridge between them before he had passed. But Lacey pushed the thought aside, determined not to let anyone ruin this day. Lacey nodded. "Yes. I'm ready."One corner of Camari's lips curled into a smile. "Well, then. You shouldn't keep your Mate waiting."Lacey headed through the living room, dressed in a full-leng

Later that night after the Alphas and her family had either left the castle or had retired for the night, Lacey prepared herself for the talk with her mother about Thorn's and Lynessa's deaths."Would you like me to go with you?" Julien asked as they ascended the stairs. Lacey shook her head. "No. I just want to get this over with."Julien pulled her to a stop at the top of their stairwell and placed his hands on her shoulders, looking into her eyes. "Lacey, it couldn't be helped. They attacked you. Remember that." Then he let out a deep breath. "If you hadn't fought them, then they would have killed you. It was self-defense."Lacey nodded. "Yes, I know. But it doesn't make it any easier."Julien nodded, understanding. "Let me know if you need me."But then she pulled him close. "Julien, I'm proud of you tonight. You are a wonderful Alpha Supreme. You not only think about your pack, but the whole Tribe, as well."He raised his eyebrows. "You mean, our pack."Lacey smiled as she nodded

Lacey sighed, thinking. "Julien, I'll be honest with you."He rubbed his thumb across the top of her hand. "Yes, please do."Lacey nodded, and then looked into his eyes. "Roth was horrible to me while we were growing up. Not only him, but all my siblings with Thorn and my mother. You already know that." She bit her upper lip and then released it. "But I don't think that a year is too much to ask to prove his allegiance to you, and to me." She placed a hand atop his, holding his hand. "A year would be plenty of time to show his allegiance and his loyalty. Then after a year, if he proves unworthy, then you can strip him of his title." Lacey patted his hand, looking into his eyes. "Give him a chance. I think he'll make a strong, loyal Alpha if given the chance to do so. Especially now that Thorn is gone."Julien nodded and then kissed her hand, too. "You are a wise woman, and to you, like our subjects, I also pledge my fealty." Then he gave her a long, lingering kiss as he placed his hand

"Thanks for staying to speak with me," Julien said to Roth, Arkin, Seth, and Chris after the other Alphas had left. Lacey stayed, too. Since the battle, Julien had been including her on all pack decisions, and they had been running The Harvest Moon Pack together as a team. They had truly become partners, with mutual respect.Julien let out a deep breath taking his seat. "I didn't want the other Alpha's to know, so I decided to do this privately." Then he looked over at Roth. "Roth, I know that you didn't make the decision to stand with the rogue wolves and Rex against me." Clearly, Julien was giving him the benefit of the doubt. "Thorn did that. But now you have the chance to do the right thing."Roth leaned forward, folding his hands on the table. "And how do you propose I do that?"Julien sighed, and then looked into his eyes. "You need to step down as Alpha of The Silver Moon Pack."Roth nodded. "Alpha Grey, I understand your position, but this is my birthright." He sighed. "I was

About a week later, after everything had settled down, Julien called the very first council meeting of all the packs in the area. And it was mandatory that all Alphas attend. Julien hosted it in the smaller dining area adorned with Julien's paintings. Although it was much smaller than the grand dining hall, it would be big enough for this meeting. Lacey had ensured that a meal was properly prepared for the meeting and all packs were given a room if they chose to stay overnight. When Eric and Seth walked in with Arkin, they both shook Julien's hand as he and Lacey greeted the Alphas and pack leaders at the door."Julien, I'm so glad you did this," Arkin said, looking around at all the different factions. "It's about time we all start working together.""Precisely," Julien agreed. "I truly appreciate you coming. There's some things I'd like to discuss with you.""Sounds good," Arkin said. "Whatever you need."Julien nodded and then turned to greet the other Alphas coming in behind them

Lacey waited inside the compound along with the rest of The Harvest Moon Pack, all weary from the battle. "Anyone in need of medical attention, go immediately to the infirmary!" "Aye!" the entire pack yelled in unison. Robes had been handed out as they walked in, taking their human forms, along with bottled water."Let me take a look at that." Misty stood at the door and checked a shifter's arm as he came in. "You. Go to the infirmary." Then she stopped three young shifters. "You three look exhausted. Are you hurt?""No, ma'am," the three said in unison. Misty nodded. "Good. Then go upstairs to take a bath and get some rest. Food will be served in the dining hall soon.""Yes, Ma'am." Then the three of them headed up the stairs.Misty spent her time directing the others instead of taking care of herself. "Julien!" Lacey yelled when he came walking through the door. He was bloody, but appeared to be no worse for wear. "Let's get you to the infirmary.""It's you who needs to go." He l
