Chapter 6

So you mean most members of the pack believes I'd be happier thinking she killed herself? ".

Yes, Lucas nodded his head to the side, if we have a murderer amongst us, it would definitely shake up the whole pack.

"But if it were to appear like she committed suicide,  everything would appear a lot cleaner."

She left me a suicide note and it was written in her handwriting.

She committed suicide and that's it.

Dustin took another gulp of his beer but this time it was tasting sour.

So why don't you tell her sister the truth? Why are you sending Mike who's certain to mess up the whole thing.

Lucas's mouth curved up, an evil smile on his face, the first Distin had seen him make in a while

If he gets fresh, he's certain to look like Octavia with a colorful new pair of eyes.

Dustin ignored his comment.

"If her twin sister is looking into the cause of her death, then it means Akila must not have had any brothers."

“We didn't know she had any family, period.”

Dustin rubbed his forehead with his palm, trying to ease the tension pooling there.

The distressing pain of her death would never go away , but now seeing her twin sister who looked a lot like her brought it all back to the surface

Yet he was angry with his mate for killing herself.

The doctor said it was a part of the griefing process , but Dustin really hated himself for not being able to control his feelings better.

Guilt and regret, that's the only feeling he would allow himself

I'm starting to believe I know very little to nothing about my mate

Lucas glanced back to look at their usual table which had previously been occupied by a strange woman that was already threatening the peace of the town.

If I were in your shoes, I'd tell the woman what I think and I'll make sure to send her packing to her home where she came from.

Things could become messy real quick if she continued to stay around.

As it already stands, the other women in town are already of the opinion that's she's here to become your new mate, they think she's here to replace her sister.

“That would be the damned day,” Dustin growled, yet a twinge of need wreaked havoc with his feelings, and his brother looked like he didn't believe him one bit.

Akila had not yet gone far from the tavern when she heard the tavern door open and creak shut behind her , she didn't want to turn back to look at who just came out of the tavern,  they were most  likely to be following her and she wasn't ready for any more drama.

She took a peek over her shoulder without fully turning back , she saw one of Dustin brother's Mike she thought,  taking great strides to get to her, his eyes and mouth lit up in a smile .

Oh Great.

Just great.

How in heavens name was she suppose to put plan B in motion?

Plan B to break into Dustin's house to try to search his house if she can find any clues about Asta's death while he was at the tavern drinking with his brothers, but here she was with one of his brother's following her.

She gave him a look which didn't hide her annoyance .

His face lit up with even more smile and his eyes sparkled with so much interest.

She was headed to the Morgan's Bed and breakfast, figuring she could slip out of her window window if Mike sat down outside at the lobby or was he going to follow her into her room?

Definitely not, she thought to herself.

Just before she reached the brick building, Mike caught up with her and was standing so close to her that she could feel the heat of his body and could smell the beer in his breath.

"You're Akila's sister" Am I right?

You guys really look alike

Asta's Sister she corrected him.

He bowed his head slightly and responded,I wasn't sure until I heard your voice when you spoke back at the tarvern.

You sure shook up  the whole town, especially my brother Dustin.

"But I think he needed it, he needed something to raise him from the pit of hell he's been in for a while- -"

Just before Mike could complete his statement, a clicking sound made , a very familiar sound to both of them, the sound made when someone switched off the safety of a gun caught her ear, the sound of danger.

She turned her head around immediately.

Just there in an heartbeat she'd wished she brought her gun along with her, she could have put it in her purse, but she decided against it and now she needed it.

But she had hidden under the mattress until she needed it.

And she was afraid she needed it now.

Mike seized her arm.

 “Wait,” he whispered to her

The hair on her skin rose in fear, prickled with concern.

He'd heard it too, the danger sound of a gun which signalled a gun could be fired any time soon..

She had hoped she was mistaken , maybe it was something else, but Mike just confirmed to her, there was danger behind them.

That's the sound of a Nine-millimeter gun he warned, his voice silent .

Before they could move any further, a shot rang out , Mike cried, and pushed Akila behind him to push her to safety and he fell to his knees.

Run away, Run back to the tavern!!

Oh my god, her day couldn't get any worse, someone had shot Mike ! She took his arm and she tried to move him, but he had a really heavy weight as he slipped to the floor and passed out.

Blood dripped down his face .

The bullet had hit him in the temple

The shooter moved out of the shadows, he blocked her path back to the tavern so she couldn't run back to the tavern.

He had a pleasant face to look at if the murduring bastard weren't wearing such a scowl.

He wore a scruffy black beard, his hair was unkempt and wore a rumpled cloths that made him look like he'd been running around in the woods for days

He had amber eyes , his eyes looked almost wolf like,  but being upwind of him, she couldn't tell if he was a human or a Lycoan.

He had his gun pointed at her, did the gun contain regular bullets or silver bullets?

Herr heart was raising too  fast, was this the end for her?

Was she going to die just like her sister?

She had come here to avenge her sister,  was this the end of the road?

She wasn't going to let it all end like this , she had to find her way out of this.

What do you want from me?

She asked trying to slow the rate at which her heart was beating because if it continued this way she was probably going to die before he even pulled the trigger.

She doubted if anyone heard the shootingt from the tavern because the tavern was noisy when she shut the door behind her

The gunman was standing some distance away from her so she couldn't tackle him.

Before she took three steps, he could pull the trigger five times

If she tried to run into the inn behind her, he might shoot Mrs. Morgan , or the twin girls who kept hanging around the lobby earlier before she had left the inn.

She wished she could dash into the inn to get her gun.

Where the hell was her cousin Thaddeus,  now when she needed him the most? If he was still in his wolf form like she suspected he was  his strong Canines would be able to take care of this menace.

Shapeshifting into her wolf form wasn't an option, she'd probably be dead and buried before she could fully shapeshift , he wasn't going to stand there and watch her shapeshift.

What's worse, she still wasn't sure if the gun was loaded with silver or regular bullets.

She was out of choices, she did the only one thing that she could think of , Screaming.

Screaming would bring help for Mike and maybe scare away the gunman who for whatever reason was hesitant to pull the trigger .

She screamed.

Just as she screamed, the gunman's eyes widened , and he curved his lips downward and pulled the trigger, he fired not once, not twice, but three times.

The bullets hit her straight in the chest , the impacts of the bullets sending her against the brick wall building, she nearly collapsed.

For a few seconds, she didn't feel the pain as she struggled to stand on her feet.

When the gunman saw that she didn't collapse to the ground , he stared at her like she was the devil's incarnate.

The the pain registered in her body, she could feel the whole pain hard, she was almost about to loose conciousness.

Then the gunman raised his gun again to put another set of bullets into her chest.

She wasn't going to wait for him to pull the trigger once again

She fled into the woods the gunmen emerged from , the forest skirting the town.

She intended to come back to find help for Mike once she could loose the gunman in the woods

She gave the gunman a real run for whatever money he had been paid to eliminate her.

Blood money she thought to herself.

Thank God the bullets were regular bullets, they didn't burn like silver bullets.

She would probably be dead by now if the gunman had fired silver bullets into her chest instead of regular bullets.

She'd survive regular bullets,  she just needed to find a hiding place and allow her body to heal.

Her assailant was hot on her trail,  he appeared determined,  he wasn't going to loose her.

She felt a stabbing pain streak through her chest affecting every inch of her body.

She could feel the hot blood seeping through from ther wounds.

With every second as she ran, her heart pumped out more blood and she felt her legs beginning to weaken.

Run Akila, damn your luck, Run.

If ever she had to push herself, this was the time.

Branches broke several yards behind her as she dove around trees, scrambled over fallen, rotting trunks, clawed through thick brush.

As much noise as the gunman was making, she again assumed he was human.

Which was good for her.

If he had been a wolf she probably wouldn't survive tonight.

Because

If he had been a wolf, he would be able to see the trail of blood she was leaving and be able to follow her through her scent.

Then again the blowing wind was more than enough to help her disguise her location.

Oh hell she forgot, as much perfume as she had on, even a human would be able to follow her.

She continued running, trying to remain downwind of him.

Trying--was the key word, because her senses were beginning to fail her -one by one.

She could no longer here the singing birds in the trees or the sound of the whistling wind through the leaves

All she could hear was her heavy breathing and the blood roaring in her ears.

Her eyes were beginning to feel blurry and she miscalculated the lay of the ground thereby missing her next step.

The ground seemed to give way.

And she fell down to the ground.

Striking branches and brambles, she grabbed for anything to stop her tumble down the steep incline, skinning and cutting her hands.

Her oversized cowboy hat was the first to fall off her body, next was her glasses.

A branch scraped off one earring, then the other.

Her hair tangled on every branch in her path, yanking at her scalp, the branches and twigs giving up their hold as she rolled.

She continued to roll downwards and downwards hitting her body against rocks and stumps , her whole body was bruised and battered , she gritted her teeth as her whole body registered the pain.

For a second, she worried about the damned disguise and the trail she'd left behind for the attempted murderer.

Just then her back struck something rock hard, unforgiving, massive.

The pain shot straight up her spine, all the way to her brain, short-circuiting it.

Blackness enveloped her as her night vision and all her senses shut down.
