Hayley POVYou could hear a pin drop when I walk into Blake Steel’s office. He’s sitting behind his large desk, lounging back in his imposing black leather chair, looking relaxed and as if he’s thoroughly enjoying himself. Marcus, on the other hand, looks tense. More than tense, like he's about to explode. He’s sitting opposite Blake, hunched over, elbows resting on his knees, one of which is bouncing up and down at a frantic speed. There is a tumbler of amber liquid in the other hand and he’s holding it like it’s his lifeline. His grip is so tight, I’m worried the glass will shatter at any second.Max leans against the wall to one side of the room, arms crossed across his broad chest, dark hair back in a man bun. He doesn’t smile as I walk in, just watches, which lets me know he is firmly in the ‘not happy with Hayley right now’ camp. I didn't lie to him exactly, I just neglected to tell him the whole truth. I stop just inside the door and smooth out my cream dress, trying to calm m
Marcus POVMy head is spinning. Not only is my mate not where I was expecting her to be, but Hayley has stashed her in the one place I can’t go. All I want is to find her and hold her, to tell her how much I want her, that I’ve never stopped thinking about her, and that I’ll make it up to her for the rest of our lives if she’ll let me. This must be some sort of twisted karma for being stupid enough to push her away in the first place.“Hayley,” Blake asks cautiously, “are you sure she’s safe there?”I’m not sure whether it’s me he’s trying not to upset, in case I lose my cool right here in his office, or Hayley, in case she clams up and refuses to tell us anymore.“Of course, she’s safe there. Dean isn’t the monster you all make him out to be,” she says, exasperated. Max sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose.“You don’t know that for certain,” he says quietly. “I know that stood up for you against Toby. But that doesn’t mean he’s not also capable of doing bad things. Living in a pa
Marcus POV A wide river marks the boundary between the Grey Ridge pack and Reynold’s territory. It’s slow and meandering, the dark water reflecting silvery grey in the moonlight on this clear, bright night. When I crawl to a stop behind Rex and park my truck, a stony-faced Cooper is standing mid-way across the bridge, arms crossed over his muscular chest, eyes fixed firmly on his mate. Hayley walks up to him and stops a foot away directly in front of him, arms by her side, waiting. I hang back, wanting to give them some privacy for what I’m sure is going to be a tense discussion. Keeping secrets from your mate is not something an Alpha male is likely to accept, especially where his own family is concerned. Not to mention Hayley has been sneaking around, speaking to another Alpha and driving off his territory with no security. The night of the fire, it wasn’t Steel’s territory that she dashed off to for Leila. It was Reynolds. On her own. With a madman running around trying to intim
Leila POV“Marcus, I… I… how?” I stutter as words completely fail me. When I heard the knock at the door, I thought it was the alpha’s sister, Maya, stopping by for a chat. The last person I expected to see on my doorstep was Marcus. How did he find me? How did he get on to pack territory? Does Alpha Reynolds know? All these thoughts are rushing through my mind when I realise that I’ve forgotten the one thing that should have been my very first thought.“You’re pregnant,” he states simply, those dark chocolate brown eyes resting their intense gaze on the hand that has moved protectively to my belly. It’s instinct and it’s the same movement that gave me away to Max. Except by now, there’s no way my scent wouldn’t have given me away just as quickly. That’s why I couldn’t go back to my own pack house until I saw Marcus and broke the news to him myself. I might have gotten away with the slight change in my scent in the hospital, by sleeping there and surrounding myself in strangers smell
Leila POV“You don’t have any shoes on,” I comment absentmindedly, but what really catches my attention is the thick bulge in the front of his black combats. I can feel his hard length where our bodies press together. The rustic one-roomed cabin I’m holed up in, which up to now had seemed quaint and cosy, suddenly feels tiny. He fills the house with his alpha aura. He’s all I can focus on and I’m hyper-aware of every slight movement, every detail of him. That, and the bed that's shoved in the corner of the room but seems to call out to me.“I kind of left in a hurry,” he mutters. I can feel the heat radiating from his powerful body, and his masculine scent floods my senses. It swirls around in my mind and makes me feel out of control. Like an addict who’d do anything for their next hit.“So, what do we do now?” I ask, the need for my mate pulsing through my veins. He has to be able to smell it. My body has been crying out for him since the second I opened the door.He tilts his head s
Leila POV He slowly peels off his trousers and climbs onto the bed in tight black boxers that leave nothing to the imagination. I can see the outline of him straining at the thin material. Even though I’ve only just climaxed, my libido spikes immediately at the sight of him crawling closer to me. “Good, now come over here.” He lies down on the bed beside me, sinking back into the pillows, and tucks me into his side. Wrapping a strong arm around my shoulder, he holds me in place against him, pressing a gentle kiss to my head and tugging the soft sheet up over us. I wait and wait. And wait some more. Amazing at that was, surely that’s not it? Not on the night that he makes this grand gesture, appearing out of the blue, demanding to be my mate, promising to help raise our baby and be together forever. I peek up at him. He has his eyes closed, but he’s definitely not asleep. In fact, his breathing is ragged and uneven despite his attempts to disguise it. And the bulge in his trousers d
Marcus POVThe smell of fresh coffee rouses me from my deep sleep. It’s clear that I’ve slept far longer than I planned when I see the strong midday sunlight streaming in through the windows. The front door to the single-room cabin is open, and I can see Leila’s feet propped up the rustic porch railing.I swing my legs over the side of the bed and tug on my trousers, foregoing the boxers that I don’t intend to keep on for very long, anyway. Padding over to the kitchen area tucked away in the far corner, I can see my wonderful mate has left me some coffee brewing and some pastries to eat. I shove a Danish into my mouth before pouring a mug and heading outside.“Morning, beautiful. And bump,” I say with a little self-satisfied smirk as I press a sticky kiss to the side of Leila's cheek, and slide into the chair beside her. A big grin spreads across her face at my appearance and she flushes a little as she takes in my semi-dressed state and naked torso. It really does a man’s ego good to
Leila POVHearing Marcus’s banter with my brothers warms my heart and I feel as though happiness is radiating from me, that everyone around me must be able to see it and feel it. He fits in here. Another powerful shifter, well able to put it up to my family, and strong enough not to be threatened by them.Much as he likes to pretend he doesn’t enjoy spending any more time with people than he absolutely has to, I know he likes them in his own sort of gruff, intolerant way. And he has taken good care of this pack of wolves since he arrived, even though he gives out about them at every opportunity. He and Rex are very alike, stern and serious most of the time, but with a heart of gold. He bonded with Cooper over a mutual protectiveness of Hayley, and I know there is nothing but respect between them over their respective parts in watching over her when she first landed in Grey Ridge. And as for Nathan, I think he finds his antics frustratingly entertaining. It’s like watching the bold beh
