Chapter 2

Author: Tiptik
After I settled Rachel in, I quickly found a job in the pack.

With my past experience working in the pack's town hall, I was assigned to the Northern packs' archives department and was tasked with registering supplies.

My monthly salary plus patrol subsidies was enough to support both Rachel and me.

However, on the third day after I started the job, Darius came to my door with Raven. Frowning, he said, "Why didn't you tell me you moved? I brought some things for Rachel."

When I saw the leather satchel in his hand, I almost laughed out loud.

That same morning, I had seen Darius at the entrance of the pack market with Raven and Cole.

Cole was crying loudly because he wanted to buy some jerky, so Raven comforted him and bought a bag of berries. But Cole suddenly knocked the bag to the ground and threw a big tantrum.

The bag Darius held now contained exactly those berries they had picked up from the ground.

I held back the sarcasm in my voice and asked, "Is there anything else?"

Darius' frown grew tighter. In the past, I would never have spoken to him in this way.

When he stayed silent, I glanced up at the sky and said, "If there's nothing else, I'll be going first. I still need to go to work."

Raven quickly spoke up, "Luna Selena, Alpha Darius wants you to give your position to me."

I froze and looked at Darius, thinking I had heard wrong. "What did you say?"

Darius nodded with certainty and said, "Selena, I've thought about it. I can't keep supporting Raven's livelihood. She needs a stable job."

My eyes turned red-rimmed, and I gritted my teeth. "So?"

"I'm the Alpha. As long as I say so, they'll prioritize arranging jobs for the mates of fallen warriors," Darius responded.

My fingernails were almost digging into my flesh at this point. I asked again, "What do you mean by that?"

Darius probably realized his words were too much, so he stopped talking.

Raven's voice suddenly turned pinched, and she started crying, "Luna Selena, I know it's unfair, but I'm a she-wolf with no mate and a pup to raise. What else can I do?

"Cole is still so young. How nice it would be if his father were still around!"

Those words worked, and Darius' back suddenly stiffened. He put on a stern face and said in a commanding tone, "Selena Vaughn! You're fighting with the mate of a fallen warrior over a job. Do you even have any shame?

"You're my Luna. Why do you still need to go out to work? Do you think I can't provide for you and Rachel?"

Still unwilling to give up, I retorted, "There are plenty of open positions in the pack. You could assign her to—"

Raven suddenly chuckled sharply. "But what can we do, Selena? I like your job!" she said sweetly.

My whole body shook as scenes of heavy snow filling the sky appeared before my eyes. I saw Rachel's frozen body and everything I had once lost.

I had already given in this much. Just why…

Darius could tell I was upset, so he put on a patient, earnest expression to try persuading me. "Selena, you're my mate and the Luna of the pack. Raven is a she-wolf raising a pup alone. It isn't easy for her…"

I laughed mockingly. The action caused my cracked lips to split open and bleed.

"But Alpha Darius, I already gave her my mate, my Alpha, and my own house. Now, the she-wolf with a pup and no mate is very clearly me!" I shot back.

I knew Darius too well. He was really capable of doing what he said.

My experience from my past life told me that the more I argued with him, the worse the result would be.

So, I lowered my eyes and softened my tone. "Rachel and I have to pay rent and buy food. The supplies at home… Didn't they all go to the mates of the fallen warriors?

"If I lose the job too, how will Rachel and I survive?"

Darius hesitated as expected. After a long pause, his tone lightened up. "Give me the address of your new house. There's still some money and games left at our place. I'll have someone deliver it tomorrow."

"Ration it well. It should last for a while, then," he added.

Since I had already moved out, I didn't want him to find me again.

I shook my head. "No need to go through the trouble. I'll go with Rachel tomorrow to pick it up."

Perhaps my coldness had set Darius off, for he frowned and said urgently, "Selena, you're my mate and the Luna, and Rachel is my daughter. I keep my promises, so why must you—"

I wasn't listening anymore, turning and walking away.

I knew this was unfair to me, and maybe even a little pathetic of me. But Darius was the Alpha, the leader of the pack.

A blizzard was about to sweep over the pack, and I had to make sure Rachel and I wouldn't starve to death.

I didn't want to experience the hunger, cold, and despair of my previous life for a second time.

  • The Alpha's Regret: Mate and Pup Gone   Chapter 10

Darius died soon after. When Raven and Cole left, they had taken everything he owned, and spending what little he had left to buy things for Rachel had drained his last savings. The pack had also taken back the house he had been given. Just like Rachel and I had lived in our past life, he was left to wander the frozen wilderness and sleep out in the open.I heard he got so hungry that he tried to fight with Rogues for food. They mauled him everywhere, and he collapsed in the snow. He spent the night there and eventually froze to death.Darius' death didn't cause much of a stir in the pack. The pack members would mention him in passing—how a former Alpha had fallen from grace and met such a miserable end—but their attention would quickly shift to the next story. After all, this was the harsh reality of the werewolf world. The weak and defeated didn't command attention for long.By the time they found Darius' body, it was frozen solid, like a stone abandoned in the wilderness.Wit

Meanwhile, I finally learned the full truth of what happened to Ezra back then."The ferry I was supposed to take was indeed ambushed by the Shadow Pack that day. But when I reached the snowy highlands, thanks to the Moon Goddess' favor, I switched to another ferry at the last moment and masked my presence."After returning to the kingdom, we determined that letting me appear dead in that attack was likely the best course of action."So, I hid my name and went south…"Ezra's eyes grew wet as he spoke. He held my hand and Rachel's tightly."This involved the highest secrets of the kingdom, and I had no way to contact the outside. I couldn't tell you I was still alive."I never imagined that when we finally reunited, I would see you and Rachel being bullied like this."Vaguely, I felt something was off. In my past life, until Rachel and I starved to death, there was never any word from Ezra. Why had he returned early this time and changed our fate?Unless…It wasn't until I sa

The fallout from this incident was severe, and the Alpha King delivered his judgment swiftly.Darius had falsified pack records to help Raven and Cole fraudulently claim a fallen warrior's compensation. His actions were deemed utterly reprehensible, and he lost his Alpha position. The Elder Council also reviewed Raven's case and suspended all benefits for her and Cole. The job Darius had arranged for her was gone, too.Darius, Raven, and her nightmare of a son instantly became the most despised outcasts in the pack.I heard that, on the day the sentence was handed down, Cole lunged at Darius, kicking and hitting him."You blind cripple! This is all your fault!"Then, he clung to Raven's leg, whining and crying, "Mom, I want jerky! I don't want to eat potatoes! You promised you'd buy it for me as long as I called him 'Dad!'"Raven's face went ashen with fear. The Council then became suspicious that she had encouraged Cole to poison Michael. She was placed under investigation, wi

Darius had thought the same. Unfortunately, he was wrong. After losing his eye, he became completely disabled and could no longer serve as the pack's Alpha. He left the infirmary in the morning, and by that afternoon, Raven had already left with Cole. Before she left, she cleaned out everything in the house. At the time, Darius's eye hadn't fully healed yet.Word was that, to save money for Cole's sake, Darius had left the infirmary in a hurry before his wound had even healed.Later on, the wound became infected, causing his eye to itch and ache. He fumbled his way home, hoping Raven would take him back to the healer for a checkup. But all his hands reached out to was emptiness and cold.At first, Darius didn't understand why they had left. He had arranged a job for Raven earlier, so he went to her workplace to find her. That was when he overheard Raven and Cole talking."Mom, what if Dad comes looking for us? He's blind now and has no money. He's not the Alpha anymore, and he

Darius' expression turned extremely unpleasant.Raven suddenly rushed out, shouting anxiously, "How could you take Darius' eye? He's the Alpha! His eyes serve a greater purpose. Your daughter—"I laughed out loud and retorted, "What about my daughter? Darius and your son are werewolves, but Rachel isn't one. I refuse to let my daughter donate her eye. Since you won't let Darius donate his, then Cole can go blind."At that moment, Ezra stepped forward. He swept a contemptuous glance at Darius and said, "Rachel is still a pup. The law clearly states that minors are prohibited from organ transplants, even with parental consent."Darius, surely you haven't grown so accustomed to wielding power in this pack that you think you, an Alpha, are above the law?"Ezra pulled Rachel and me close, shielding us. "Selena is right. You can't decide to transplant Rachel's eye. However, you can choose to transplant your own. What's the matter? It's easy to be generous with another's things, but it's

Seeing that I was about to leave with Rachel, Darius grew anxious. He stepped forward in one swift motion, blocking our exit. He raised his hand to stop us. "You can't leave. Cole is waiting for a healthy eye transplant. If Rachel doesn't give him her eyes—"Ezra cast a cold, authoritative glance his way and asked quietly, "If Rachel doesn't give him her eye, will that brat go blind?"However, if you actually take her eye, Rachel will be the one who goes blind."Although Darius couldn't fathom how Ezra had survived, he knew instinctively that this was someone he shouldn't mess with. Thus, he tried to guilt-trip me, shifting the pressure onto me. "Selena, you've always been so understanding. You're the Luna. You wouldn't be so selfish as to only think of yourself, would you?"As I stared at the Alpha before me, waves of bitter irony washed through me, even though my heart had long turned to ashes.I met his eyes and suddenly broke into hysterical laughter. My laughter carried all
