An hour after we trapped the Dawn Stalkers in the town hall, I prepared to make contact. We had used some of the vehicles left behind to start moving bodies. We’d lost a few of the street lights to stray bullets, but we used that our advantage while moving about. Even in the dark, I had expected to be ducking shots from Beta Logan’s crew inside the building as we worked around them, but it didn’t happen. I wondered how low in ammunition they were running to not take the opportunity.

I wondered how low in ammunition they were running to not take the opportunity.I stood in the shadows of the bank across the street with a walkie-talkie. I knew there was another one still in the office we’d used to plan. I wanted Kimo’s captain to hear the conversation, so I just hoped it was still on the right channel.“Come in, Dawn Stalkers,” I spoke into the device. “Dawn Stalkers, come in. This is Alpha Danvers of the Ironpaw Pack. I repeat. This is Alpha Danvers of the Ironpaw Pack.”I paused, giving time for a response. Only silence.“Come in, Dawn Stalkers,” I said again. “T

Rhonen smelled the first before we saw him. He’d shifted, abandoning his weapon somewhere in the chaos. As soon as he was clear of the smoke, Rhonen leapt from the shadows. Our jaws clamped down on the back of his neck, his yelp cut short as we snapped it in one quick movement.Tossing the body aside, we faced the wall of smoke as another Dawn Stalker came running. Before I could move, Max’s wolf, Zev, came bounding behind him, taking him out at the knees. His gun went skidding across the ground. Rhonen picked it up and threw it in some nearby bushes as two more of my men came to guard the area. With this end covered, Rhonen rushed into the fray. Using his nose to guide him. There were areas where the haze was dissipating, but our rooftop scouts were doing a good job of throwing more smoke bombs to keep our cover. Keeping toward the edge of the road, it was easy to pick off those trying to take refuge in the buildings as they banged on doors and broke windows. Not only were the Ironpa

The sound of crickets filled the night air. It was the only thing keeping me still as I waited in the darkness. We knew it would be well into the night before the Dawn Stalkers would reach us. But I was hoping the scouts we had near the border would have given us some news by now.As soon as I thought it, I felt it.My hand went to my chest. That faint pang of a tether dissipating coming through. Then another. They were here. We had lost two pack members already. My jaw clenched. My hands fisting. If a pack member died of natural causes or from self-inflicted injury, I wouldn’t have felt the loss. Otherwise, Alpha’s would go crazy feeling from feeling the tethers break every day. But if they were killed, especially by someone else, then I would feel it.‘It’s started,’ I linked Jaden and Max. ‘They just hit one of the patrols.’‘So we have what… an hour before they make it here?’ Jaden replied.‘Yeah,’ I replied. ‘Make sure your teams are ready.’I sent a link out to those on my team,

“We have everything organized, Alpha. I put all my lab assistants and students to work as soon as you called.”“Thank you, Dr. Sanchez,” I replied as we followed her through the halls of the research facility.“Please, Alpha, call me Margot,” Dr. Sanchez stated. “We’re about to be fighting side-by-side. Formalities seem a bit impersonal.”“We’ll have you out of town long before dark, Margot,” I told her. “We only need you to stay long enough to show us what to do before you evacuate with the others.”Margot stopped, turning to face us with a severe expression. “Alpha, I have just undone months worth of work and research because these assholes think they can take our Luna from us. Neither of those things have me in a mood to roll over.”“You’re not a warrior,” I said.“I grew up with seven brothers, sir,” Margot replied with a raised brow. “I know how to hold my own. Besides, I have to stay and make sure you guys don’t kill yourselves with our new toys.”With that, she turned and enter

“They’re spread along the border,” Max told me as I leaned over a map of the territories. “A few small groups tried to test our scouts here and there. Although, I think their trying to give us a false sense of security.”“How so?” Jaden asked.“No guns,” Max explained. “I think they want us to believe they’re sticking to the rules. They want us to get over-confident by thinking this is going to be a good ol’ wolf-on-wolf fight.”“Are we sure it won’t be?” Jaden questioned. “It’s going to take a lot of manpower to hold the capital. Do we think they have enough fire power to spare for a push into our land?”Max shrugged. “Not for sure.”“But we will assume they do,” I said. “I think Max is right. They’re playing with us. Anders thinks he’s already won so he’s in no hurry. That’s why he hasn’t attacked yet.”“But he will attack,” Max concluded. “I just don’t know where. Some of the scout teams have been more cautious than I would like. While I can’t blame them knowing what they could be

It was still dark when we landed in Port Sever. The manager of the marina was already waiting for us. His usual grisly, serious face greeting us at the top of the pier. Arms crossed over his chest as he scanned our group as we hauled our things up the dock.“I’ve got the tour bus parked at the gate,” he said gruffly. “It may not be as stylish as your usual transportation, but it’ll get you where you need to go.”“I’m sure it will work just fine, Jerry,” I said.We followed him out of the marina. The tour bus was a short bus used to pick up tourists from the local hotels. A logo covered half the side panel, though it was too dark to make it out. Not that I cared to try. All I wanted was to get loaded and get on the road.We weren’t going far. I had arranged for a helicopter to pick us up at the local hospital’s helipad. From there, I would take the girls back to the packhouse before Jaden and I went to the border to meet with Max.We were all on edge. I was wound so tight that I knew I
