Gianna dressed quickly, pulling on a dark cloak that would help her blend into the night.

She was halfway down the stairs when Cyrus appeared.

He stood at the bottom, watching her descend with narrowed eyes.

"You're in a hurry," he said.

Gianna kept walking.

"I asked you a question." He stepped into her path. "Where are you going?"

She moved around him without responding.

"Gianna."

She didn't stop. She walked straight out the door and into the night, leaving him standing there.

Gianna quickly brushed it off. She stood from the chair and forced a smile. "I need to check on my plants," she said. Alexandra looked at her carefully. "Gianna—" "I will be right back." She left the study before he could say anything else. Her heart was pounding. She had been so close to telling him everything. So close to spilling the entire truth under his scrutinizing stare. She was glad she had not. She walked to the garden and found her plant exactly where she had left it. It had grown taller since the last time she had seen it. The leaves were greener. Healthier. She knelt beside it and touched the soil. It was damp. Someone had been watering it while she was gone. She stayed there for a while. Just looking at the plant and letting her heartbeat slow down. Then she stood and went back inside. She had a bath and changed into clean clothes. The water was warm and it helped ease the tension in her shoulders. When she was done she went downstairs and joined her father fo

She did not look back. If she looked back she would change her mind and she could not afford to do that. She went to her room and gathered her things. It did not take long. She had not brought much with her. When she came back downstairs Elmund was waiting with the horse. Nolan was not there.Gianna mounted the horse and looked back at the palace one more time. She did not see him in any of the windows. She turned the horse toward the road and rode out through the gates. The ride to Highmoon was long and quiet. Gianna did not stop. She just kept going until she saw the familiar gates of her father's estate.Alexandra was standing at the gate when she arrived. Like he had been waiting for her.Gianna dismounted and walked toward him. He opened his arms and she walked straight into them."I knew y

Gianna's cheeks turned fiery red. She could feel the heat spreading down her neck and across her chest. She reached out carefully and picked the steak off his skin with her fingers. Her fingertips brushed against him in the process. His skin was warm. She pulled her hand back quickly but Nolan caught her wrist before she could step away. "Do not let go yet," he said. Gianna looked up at him. "Why not?" "Because I am not ready for you to." His grip was gentle but firm. His thumb was resting against her pulse point and she knew he could feel how fast her heart was beating. "Nolan—" "Stay," he said quietly. "Just for a moment." Gianna looked at their hands. Then she looked back at his face. There was something vulnerable in his expression that she had not seen before. She stayed. They stood like that for a long moment. Neither of them speaking, just looking at each other. Then Nolan let go of her wrist. Gianna pulled her hand back and hit him lightly on the shoulder. It was a

She walked back into the corridor and stopped one of the maids. "Where is the King?" Gianna asked. "He left early this morning, my lady. He had a meeting with the council members." "Did he eat breakfast?" The maid hesitated. "No, my lady. He did not." Gianna's chest tightened. "Bring food to his chambers. Now." The maid bowed and hurried away. Gianna went back into Nolan's room and sat on the couch. She waited. Her hands were clenched in her lap and her heart was beating too fast. She had hurt him last night. She knew she had and now he was skipping meals again and she did not know how to fix it. The door opened an hour later. Nolan walked in and stopped when he saw her sitting on the couch. His jaw clenched. His hands tightened on the documents he was carrying. But something in his gaze softened. Just slightly. Just enough for her to see it. "What do you want?" he asked. His voice was flat. Controlled. Gianna did not answer. She stood and walked to his side. She reached

His voice was final. Gianna opened her mouth to say something else but the words did not come. She turned and followed Elmund out into the corridor. The door closed behind her with a quiet click. Elmund led her through the hallways without speaking. Gianna followed in silence. Her mind was spinning. Her chest felt tight. She had not meant to hurt him. She had only wanted the truth. But the look on his face when she asked that question. The way his voice had changed. She suddenly felt guilty. Elmund stopped in front of a door and opened it. The room inside was smaller than Nolan's chambers but it was clean and comfortable. A fire was already burning in the hearth. "Will this be suitable, my lady?" Elmund asked. "Yes," Gianna said quietly. "Thank you." Elmund bowed and left. The door closed and Gianna was alone. She walked to the bed and sat down. She did not lie down. She just sat there with her hands in her lap and stared at the fire. She kept thinking about what Nolan had sa

Gianna felt something warm spread through her chest at his words. She had not expected him to say that. She had not expected him to be so honest about what he needed from her. But then reality crashed down on her like cold water. She sat up slightly and looked at him in the dim light. "I cannot stay here," she said. Nolan turned his head to look at her. "Why not?" "Because the narrative will take a toll on me. Not on you. No one will dare question your authority. But I will bear the stigma of being an adulterous woman." "That is not—" "It is exactly what will happen," Gianna said. "You know it is true." Nolan was quiet for a moment. Then he sat up as well. "What are you saying?" he asked. "I only came here so you would stop starving yourself. I will be returning to Highmoon soon. But in the meantime you need to find me a separate room." "Gianna—" "And we need to stop being intimate," she continued. "Until you put a tag to what we are. I am not ready to be reduced from a L
