Chapter 191

Author: Memo Harbor
Cyrus pressed his hand against the pistol in his pocket and thought of the loaded rifles waiting in his pocket dimension. The thought steadied his nerves.

He pulled out his phone and sent quick messages to Kenneth and Zoey, telling them to lock their doors and stay alert for possible attacks from the other buildings. He tucked the phone back into his coat to shield it from the cold.

He started the snowmobile and drove forward. When he reached the edge of the complex, everything changed.

The snow in front of him exploded upward. A full wooden door panel shot upright out of the ground and blocked his path.

He had no time to brake, so he tried to veer aside.

A sharp crack rang out as the snowmobile clipped the panel, skidded sideways, and knocked it off its hinges. Two men hidden beneath the snow flew through the air like rag dolls.

They had buried themselves in the drift and tied a rope to the door panel, hoping to use it as a makeshift barricade. The idea was flimsy. The panel cou

Larry finally laughed. "There we go. That's more like it. We were just blowing off steam. Nothing else."Others joined in with easy smiles."Exactly, why take it so seriously?""We used to trash-talk our bosses all the time at work. Still had to punch in the next day."Their mouths smiled while their eyes stayed flat. Too many people had died in the past few days. Everyone carried thoughts they would not voice.…Cyrus returned with Kenneth before long. They hauled in two bags of junk food. After hearing the report, Cyrus offered a few hollow words of comfort, then handed two boxed beef meals to Rowan and Callum as a public reward. The neighbors each received food worth two portions or more. Yet Cyrus sensed the shift at once. Their voices sounded normal, but their eyes held a faint rejection. He smiled inwardly. They had begun to doubt him.So what?He knew these neighbors well. They lacked courage. A single pistol from Jack had once scared them into obedience. Even if they

Callum's words did little to quiet the complainers.A chubby man in glasses let out a derisive snort. "Come on, Callum. You're about the same age as Cyrus. Since when did you start calling him 'Daddy'? You really can't see he's using us as cannon fodder?"The phrase landed with force.A few neighbors stiffened. During the recent clashes with the Titan Gang and the Mad Wolves, more than a dozen of their own had already died. When the thought that might be my ending crossed their minds, several people felt a cold prickle run down their spines.Callum jabbed a finger at the heavyset man. "Don't talk nonsense. At least we're eating now, and that's because of Cyrus."The man, Larry Smith, smirked in contempt. "Sure, he gave us food. I'll admit I was touched at first."Then resentment twisted his expression. "But look where that got us. He keeps forcing us to fight. He's pushing us straight into the fire pits."All we had to do was hold our own building. Why go after other ones? As l

"The base should be right there," Kenneth said.Cyrus glanced at him. "A military camp covers a large area. Even if we confirm its general location, how do we find the armory?"Kenneth replied, "Back in the day, when I visited an old comrade, I went inside the compound a few times. I still remember roughly where the armory was.""Then let's go take a look," Cyrus said at once.As long as he knew the approximate location, he could return later with the excavator and dig the site open. They climbed back onto the snowmobile and sped toward the spot. Before long, Kenneth pointed at a faint rise in the whiteness. "Right around here. Shame we got here too late. Everything's been buried under the snow."He looked genuinely guilty. "Sorry, Cyrus. I might've made you come all this way for nothing."He had held onto a bit of hope on the ride here. Maybe the base wouldn't be completely buried. Standing here now, that hope felt naive.Cyrus studied the snowy landscape and tried to fix ever

The wind howled and the snow kept coming, so the snowmobile could not pick up much speed. If they pushed it, the machine could flip on the uneven ground.Cyrus and Kenneth held steady at about 30 miles an hour. More than two hours later, they reached the northwest outskirts, the open wilderness beyond Volaris City.Once they left the last clusters of buildings behind, they lost every familiar landmark. Snow more than 30 feet deep had swallowed almost everything that once stood here. The world ahead looked like a vast, unbroken sheet of white.Kenneth stopped the snowmobile beside what had once been a roadside. He narrowed his eyes against the wind and checked their surroundings several times before settling on a direction. He pointed toward a distant mound, a hump of white rising from the endless drifts."Good thing this little hill is still visible. The camp should be close. Another three miles at most," Kenneth said.Cyrus nodded as anticipation rose in him. A few minutes later,

That sudden question made Cyrus' eyes light up. "Kenneth, you know where to find weapons?"He still had plenty of guns and ammunition in his pocket dimension, but his sniper rounds were limited. The police would never store much of that type of ammo, and he had only found one police sniper rifle. As for everything else, he wanted as much firepower as he could get. Fear came from running dry.Kenneth chuckled with a proud look. "Did you forget what I used to do? I served in the army for five years."Cyrus leaned in at once. "You served here in Volaris?"If that were true, Kenneth could guide him straight to a local base.Kenneth shook his head. "No. That was years ago, not in Volaris. But I have old comrades in the unit stationed here. I know where their camp is."He added with open admiration, "Once we reach the base and find their ammo stores, you'll never worry about bullets again. With your sharpshooting, wasting talent because of a shortage would be a crime."The army valued

Cyrus and Kenneth wandered through the city and picked up whatever supplies they found without much urgency. Their conversation drifted back to the situation inside the residential compound.Kenneth eventually asked, "Someone already tried to attack you. They're jealous of that snowmobile. Things will only get worse. Do you have a plan?"Cyrus rarely had time to chat with him. The question drew a helpless smile. He let out a long sigh. "You're asking me? I planned to ask you. Everyone stares at that snowmobile. They know it's the only transportation left in this weather. Every one of them wants to take it from me. What can I do? I can only protect it as best I can. I need to protect myself too."Kenneth nodded. "True. Even looking after the people in Building 25 is difficult. You can't take care of the entire compound. More than a thousand people live there.""Exactly," Cyrus said. "So I can only take one step at a time and figure out a solution bit by bit."Kenneth went quiet fo
