Chapter 260

Author: Memo Harbor
The windows were sealed shut, frozen solid beneath layers of ice and snow. No amount of pushing or kicking made them budge. The building had become an oven, and they were sitting ducks trapped inside. Smoked ducks.

Cyrus stood outside with his rifle. Yellow firelight bathed his face, warm and steady. He remembered a bonfire night in college when everyone laughed, sang, and danced beside the flames. It was a good memory.

Tonight's bonfire dwarfed that one. This fire was bigger, wilder, and far more honest.

Only then did the neighbors grasp what he was doing. Screams and corpse-like coughing rose from within the building, sending a chill through them.

The building had become a death cage. There was no escape.

Cyrus had blocked the only exit. They could stay inside and die, or they could come out and die faster.

Soon, someone broke. A figure staggered down the smoke-filled stairwell, choking, eyes useless. He stumbled and fell straight into the flames.

A piercing scream rang out. T

Cyrus reassured Kenneth.By now, Kenneth meant something very different to him. His body had already mutated, and the exact nature of the ability remained unknown. Still, based on Zoey's description and what Cyrus had observed so far, it most likely involved physical enhancement. That detail mattered to Cyrus and to his plans. Put bluntly, what he needed was a reliable laborer and a human shield."Focus on recovering," Cyrus said calmly. "You don't need to worry about anything else."Kenneth's voice was weak. "That won't do. I feel completely drained. I can't even lift my arms. If this goes on, I'll be a burden to you for a long time.""It's fine," Cyrus replied, fully aware that the muscle relaxants caused this effect. "Rest properly. I'm here."Kenneth looked at him with gratitude and nodded. Chloe, who stood nearby, seized the opportunity at once. "Cyrus, you're treating my husband so well. Our family of three doesn't even know how to thank you. In the future, we'll have to re

That reaction only deepened Vincent's certainty that he had been poisoned.Cyrus spoke with calm assurance. "No need to panic. It's slow-acting. This way, neither of us has to second-guess the other. If you screw me over, you die too. And once I take that bunker, I won't have any reason to kill you. On the contrary, you'll get food and a comfortable place to live."Vincent retched for a while longer. Misery washed over him, but one truth cut through the haze. He had earned Cyrus' trust."I get it," Vincent said hoarsely. "I'll contact Severin as soon as I'm back. We'll move fast."Cyrus nodded. "Good. Go back for now. I'll give you instructions when needed."Vincent gasped for air and staggered down the stairs. He used the railing for support. Cyrus watched him go and released a quiet breath.Working with Vincent and catching a glimpse of a billion-dollar bunker was a major gamble. In reality, the so-called slow poison did not exist.Cyrus had injected methylene blue, a drug use

Vincent waited outside for several minutes before the door finally opened. He craned his neck at once and saw Cyrus approaching with a silver briefcaseVincent's gaze locked onto the case. Its sleek surface looked ominous, as if it concealed something impossible to predict.Cyrus stopped in front of him and asked evenly, "Do you know what I used to do?"Vincent stiffened, then shook his head. Back when he had been a rich kid, Cyrus had seemed like just another ordinary young man in the complex. Vincent had never paid him any attention.Cyrus continued calmly, "I started out as a fighter. In 2041, I won my first Southeast Lervea free-fighting championship."In 2042, I defeated the heavy hitter Druk Rakon. After that, I spent three straight years sweeping through the top karate fighters from Blossoma."Later, I joined a Gaullan mercenary group. I fought in the Middle East for years. People called me 'Half a Fox.'"Eventually, I got tired of killing. I came back home. Now, I'm just

Vincent was not wrong. The man did have a sharp edge to him."So instead of waiting to die, I'd rather gamble," Vincent said. "I'll trade the intel I have for a chance to live."Cyrus narrowed his eyes and studied him, weighing the pros and cons. If Vincent was telling the truth, that billion-dollar super bunker would be far sturdier than Cyrus' current safehouse and far better equipped.'Farms, pools, gyms, and even sex rooms. If I can take it, my quality of life will skyrocket,' Cyrus thought. But the risks could not be ignored.First, he did not trust Vincent. No matter how attractive the story sounded, Cyrus would never place blind faith in someone with whom he had no real relationship. Based on his impressions so far, Vincent was unreliable by nature. Control would be essential, as would safeguards against betrayal.Second, even if everything Vincent said was true, the operational risk remained unknown. Cyrus' own safehouse had succeeded only because of meticulous preparatio

Vincent's explanation offered Cyrus a glimpse into how top-tier heirs truly lived. None of it mattered now.Once the gossip ran its course, Cyrus fixed his gaze on Vincent and asked evenly, "Tell me your plan. If I agree to work with you, how exactly will you help me?"Vincent sensed an opening and straightened at once."I still have contact with Severin. After I told him about you, he became very interested in your supplies and your snowmobile. So we put on a show. I pretend to lure you over. He opens the door himself. And then…" Vincent grinned. "With your skills, Cyrus, killing him would only take minutes."Cyrus considered this, then looked at him with cool detachment. "If that bunker really cost a billion dollars, does he actually need my supplies?"Cyrus had seen enough sci-fi movies to know what such a bunker should contain. A facility of that level ought to hold stockpiles meant to last decades. It should not be running short after a single month.Vincent scratched his he

Vincent laughed. "Cyrus, don't take this the wrong way, but the way the truly rich play is beyond anything ordinary people can imagine. You think the lives of tycoons in web novels are exaggerated and fake, right? Compared to reality, those stories still hold back."Cyrus's expression sharpened. Everyone had a weakness for gossip."Oh?" he said. "How so?"Vincent smiled. "Severin doesn't just have tens of thousands of women. He has well over 100,000."Cyrus froze for a moment, then burst out laughing. "Bullshit. At least lie within reason. Don't think I'm clueless just because I'm not a rich kid. 100,000? Why not say a billion while you're at it?"He assumed Vincent was messing with him.Even the most debauched emperors in history kept harems of only several tens of thousands. The numbers grew so absurd that one emperor reportedly used goat carts to decide where to sleep.Severin was barely 40. If he truly had over 100,000 women, he would need to sleep with hundreds every day. S
