Chapter 2

Author: Memo Harbor
Cyrus stepped out of his apartment and into a scene of warmth and peace. Parents laughed with their children in the square. Their faces were bright with carefree smiles. He knew better. In a month, this idyllic picture would shatter like glass.

He quickened his pace. Just a short walk away stood a Michelin three-star restaurant. It was a place he had never dared enter. After all, a single meal there cost at least 1,000 dollars..

Today he did not care. He had already died once. If that did not call for celebration, what would?

Inside, Cyrus chose a seat by the window and ordered the most expensive dishes along with a bottle of Chateau Lafite. By the time the waiter left, the bill had already climbed to nearly 10,000 dollars.

The servers eyed him with curiosity and envy, likely taking him for some spoiled heir. What ordinary man would throw away that much money on a single meal?

Cyrus did not bother to explain. When the dishes arrived, filling the table with color and fragrance, he dug in without restraint.

After half a year of freezing to death in the Frostfall, tasting food like this again nearly moved him to tears. He ate ravenously, almost feral, drawing whispers from nearby tables.

He could not care less. They had no idea. When the world collapsed, people would beg on their knees for a single pack of instant noodles. Civilization and morals would vanish overnight.

As Cyrus ate, a woman outside the window stopped short. She was striking, with long hair flowing, immaculate makeup, Gucci heels tapping lightly against the pavement, and a Louis Vuitton bag swinging from her arm.

It was Diana Feynor, the same woman who had once lured him into opening his door only to betray him and watch as others beat him to death. Walking beside her was her closest friend, Natalie Lockwood.

The two often loitered around upscale places like this. Not because they could afford them, but because they hoped to spot some wealthy heir to ensnare.

As expected, Diana's eyes widened when she glanced inside. "Wait, that's Cyrus! How could he possibly afford a place like this?"

Natalie covered her mouth in surprise. "You mean Cyrus has been a rich heir all this time?"

Then she cast Diana a sly look. "Girl, you're lucky. The guy who's chased you for years turns out to be a secret rich heir."

Her gaze flicked to the feast before Cyrus. "Look at that table. That's at least 10 grand. Who else but a rich heir would spend that on dinner?"

Diana pursed her lips as her mind raced. For two and a half years, Cyrus had pursued her without pause. She had never accepted, but she never rejected him either.

To her, he had always been a backup, useful enough to keep close but never worth commitment.

Now doubt crept in. Could he actually be a hidden heir, pretending to be ordinary to test her love? The idea thrilled her. If it were true, she believed all she had to do was nod and he would drop to one knee.

Natalie tugged at her arm. "Let's go in and say hi. Maybe he'll invite us over."

Her real goal was obvious—the food. Most people would never taste three-star Michelin cuisine in their lives.

Diana hesitated, then shook her head. "No. That would make me look like I'm chasing his money. Let's wait outside. If we bump into him, it'll seem natural."

She was not stupid. One meal was not worth ruining her goddess-like image. If Cyrus truly was rich, she would stay firmly on the pedestal, holding all the power.

Therefore, the two women lingered nearby, waiting.

Inside, Cyrus ate until his stomach was round and full. The flavors were not as heavenly as the price suggested, but to a man who had starved through the apocalypse, it was a feast beyond measure.

Next, he planned to stop by the supermarket to test how much his pocket dimension could store. It was better to be cautious now than risk disaster later.

He paid the bill with a wave of his hand and stepped out into the afternoon sun.

A sweet, saccharine voice echoed behind him. "Cyrus! What a coincidence."

He turned to find Diana and Natalie.

Diana tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and exposed the curve of her neck and the pale pink of her earlobe. It was a practiced, subtle move meant to stir a man's heart.

In his past life, it had worked. Not anymore.

Cyrus' eyes went cold. He remembered how she had set him up, had watched while his ribs were broken one by one, and had demanded his bones be boiled into soup.

The world's end was near, so killing her now would not be a problem. His chest tightened with the urge to strike her down.

Diana shivered under his stare. "Cyrus, what's wrong?"

He pulled back, his expression flat. "Nothing. Thought you were someone else."

He changed his mind. Killing her now would be too easy and merciful. The law still mattered for one more month.

It was better to let her live and taste despair first. He had numerous ways to make her die screaming.

For now, survival came first. His priority was to build the safest shelter possible, a fortress against the end of the world.

Thorgan's abilities, however, had a much broader range of application. Because he could draw materials directly from the environment, his power also consumed less energy.By contrast, Bianca could create a frozen environment even in the absence of ice or snow.As a result, the icehouse she constructed was sturdier than Thorgan's. If she wished, it could even withstand small-caliber artillery fire.Inside the icehouse, several people warmed themselves by a fire. Once their body temperatures recovered, they would head back out to harass Cyrus again. After an entire day of effort, they had managed to leave only shallow marks on the outer wall. They had made no real progress.Florian, however, remained extremely patient. As he warmed himself by the fire, he casually took out some cured meat from Willowford Town and grilled it, restoring everyone's strength.Between tending the meat, with the fire crackling and the rich aroma of fat and smoke in the air, he began recounting stories fr

Cyrus crunched on his nuts and said casually, "Those few are the elite of the West Ridge Base. It's no surprise they're that strong."He glanced at the women beside him. "See? The outside world is dangerous. There are freakishly powerful ability users out there. So let's not wander off carelessly in the future. Staying here with food, heat, and comfort—this is the good life."The women nodded. Over the past few days, constant gunfire and explosions outside had kept them on edge.Scarlett asked, "Even if we know their plan, we can't go out. How will we know how far they've dug?"Cyrus smiled and turned to Barbara, who sat nearby with quiet poise. "Babs, why don't you explain?"Barbara shot her cousin a quick look, lifted her chin slightly, and replied, "Sound travels faster through solids than through air. Since they're digging underground, the vibrations will be even more noticeable."All we need is a receiving device. With that, I can analyze their construction progress on the c

Under Florian's command, the entire ACE unit and the residents of Willowford Town mobilized.Florian, Ilyana, and Damian led the assault on the bunker. They had already confirmed that the spatial ability did not actively absorb living bodies, so they planned to rely on brute force to open a breach. In reality, the assault was a performance. Its purpose was to mislead Cyrus. If they were going to act, they had to make it convincing. They redeployed large numbers of special operations soldiers to provide various forms of long-range fire support. Aside from the absence of high-yield explosives, the offensive appeared fierce and relentless. If Cyrus had not received advance intelligence from an insider, he might have believed they had truly lost their minds.Meanwhile, on the river embankment about a mile from the bunker, armed special operations soldiers supervised the people of Willowford Town as they began excavation work.Every villager arrived with tools, yet no one knew the tru

Cyrus replied in a lazy, almost teasing tone.Cyrus: [You're right, Ms. Brandt. But if I destroy their tunnel too quickly, wouldn't that expose you?]Cyrus: [You said it yourself. Everyone in Willowford Town has had their communication devices confiscated. The only people who can still contact the outside world are you and the West Ridge Special Forces team.]Cyrus: [So the moment something goes wrong, who do you think they'll suspect first?]He crossed his arms, a faintly mocking smile playing on his lips."I can't sacrifice you just to save a bunch of villagers, can I?" He let out a theatrical sigh, then offered a suggestion as if it were perfectly reasonable.Cyrus: [How about this? I'll give you some advice. Go talk to Captain Winterhelm properly and try to convince him to abandon the plan. Or better yet, fight him and force him to agree. At least that's somewhat realistic. Even if you fail, he probably won't kill you outright. That's far safer than being exposed as a mole. D

Florian had been wary of everyone in Willowford Town, even Thorgan. The one person he never suspected was a traitor within his own Special Forces team. When Ilyana entered the West Ridge Base, her background had undergone a thorough investigation. On paper, she had never crossed paths with Cyrus. That brief encounter at Greenvich Academy had left no digital trace. That single oversight doomed his meticulously crafted plan. It did not last a day before it leaked.Back in her room, Ilyana immediately sent Cyrus the intel.Ilyana: [The Special Forces unit plans to dig a tunnel and detonate explosives beneath your bunker. They've mobilized the entire town. The construction site is far from your position, so you won't spot it easily. But if you pay close attention, you'll notice signs.]…When Cyrus read the message, he paused."Underground demolition, huh?"He had considered the possibility himself. But it would take time. Given how heavily reinforced the underground structure was,

Two other powerful ability users stood present, along with dozens of elite soldiers. If she made a move now, she would be walking straight into her own execution.Sensing the tension, Bianca stepped forward. As another woman on the team, she gently looped an arm through Ilyana's.Bianca said softly, "We don't have a choice. Cyrus controls enough supplies to sustain thousands. Those resources are critical to West Ridge."This is the apocalypse. Only a minority will survive. Instead of pitying everyone else, protect yourself and the people closest to you. For example, your students."At the mention of her students, Ilyana forced herself to calm down. Clashing with Florian now would help no one, least of all them.Seeing her expression soften, Bianca continued, her smile reassuring, "We're only asking them to dig tunnels, not charge into gunfire. If they all froze or dropped dead, where would we get our labor? Relax. We're not running a sweatshop."Ilyana inhaled slowly, then exhale

The call cut off mid-noise. Only the dull beeping echoed through the control room.Cyrus leaned back in his chair and thought, 'I thought this would be an easy pickup. Turns out it will be far more trouble than I expected.'He disliked trouble.Scarlett suddenly gripped his arm. "Cyrus…"Her eye

Cyrus picked up the call. "Yeah.""Cyrus, I'm already across the river. I'm waiting by the road."Thorgan knew better than to come anywhere near Cyrus' place. The area around it remained a minefield. Even now, his cousins and uncles lay buried beneath the snow."Wait there. I'll be right over." C

Ilyana kept her face blank as she surveyed the lab. A massive machine dominated the room, occupying nearly a quarter of the space.
