Chapter 9 : A Ball was the Reason 3

Author: The Fluttering Snow
“I think Flynn is sleepy. Let’s take him inside to sleep. He’s yawned several times while playing soccer.”

“Sleepy? But Mom hasn’t come back yet.”

“Just take him to bed. Why wait for Mom?”

“That’s true. Come on, Flynn, let’s go to bed.”

She took the sleepy boy by the hand and led him into the house. Flynn’s bag held a bottle of milk. Ruby wondered, a bit puzzled, why, at five, Flynn still used a bottle.

“When my little brother was five, he didn’t use a bottle anymore, Flynn,” Ruby said, examining the bottle in her hand before looking at Flynn. She hesitated, not giving it to him right away.

“If I don’t use it, I won’t be able to sleep, Ruby. I want milk!” The little boy jumped excitedly, holding out his hands for the bottle.

“Alright, alright.” She handed the bottle in her hand to the little boy and took out the playpen mattress from his bag, laying it in the middle of the living room. He drank a little milk and then quickly fell asleep.

“Wow, you fall asleep this easily, Flynn?” she said, shaking her head and chuckling. Ruby glanced at the person sitting alone outside before heading to the bathroom. There, she checked her reflection—her hair neatly braided on both sides, not as messy as it had been yesterday while cleaning. Her sleeveless lace top and denim shorts made her look quite attractive.

‘Who taught you to praise yourself, Ruby?’

As she thought that, her cheeks immediately flushed bright red. Her imagination ran wild while he ignored her. Ruby walked out of the bathroom with her head down and went straight to him in front of the house.

“Flynn is asleep, Chris.”

“Then I’ll head back.”

“Um… aren’t you going to stay a bit longer?”

“No. I don’t have any business here anymore,” he said, then got up, walking away with a straight face.

“Oh.” She looked a little stunned but still walked him to the front door. Chris hurried back to his own house, showing no sign of regret toward her.

‘What are you expecting, Ruby? It’s never going to happen.’

“Chris.”

“What?”

“If you’re free, you can stop by and have some snacks with me.” She spoke sweetly, but he turned his back and walked away, not even bothering to reply a single word to make her happy.

Ruby sighed and closed her front door. There had been chances for them to become close, but now it felt like they were drifting apart.

In the evening, Ruby’s mother returned from the market with a taxi full of ingredients for making desserts. Ruby hurried to help carry the items into the house.

“How was it, Ruby? Was taking care of Flynn fun?”

“It was fun, Mom. Flynn is easy—he eats and sleeps well, and isn’t picky,” Ruby replied as they walked into the kitchen.

“He’s still asleep, isn’t he? He probably won’t wake up until almost evening.”

“Yes. Um… Mom, I have something to tell you.” She smiled nervously. Her mother quickly closed the fridge and turned to look at her.

“Did you do something wrong? That’s why you’re making that face.” Amber pointed a finger at her daughter, as if trying to catch her in the act. Ruby walked over and hugged her mother’s waist, seeking comfort.

“Mom always notices everything. It’s like this, I was playing soccer with Flynn during the day, and at one point, I kicked too hard. The ball flew over the wall into Paula’s yard.”

“You’ve been very naughty. So what happened next?” Amber asked as she gently pushed her daughter away and looked her straight in the eye.

“I thought no one was home. I checked the door—no cars were parked. So I climbed the wall to get Flynn’s ball,” she said hesitantly.

“Ruby! How could you climb over someone else’s wall like that?” Amber was quite shocked by her daughter’s actions.

“It’s just Flynn’s ball, Mom. I just climbed over to get it and came back. I thought it would be easy.”

“So, how did it go? Was it as easy as you thought?”

“Heh… I couldn’t climb back, so Chris came and opened the door for me.”

“See? He caught you again. What will Paula think? Climbing someone’s wall is serious!” Amber worried others would see her daughter negatively.

“It’s not that serious, Mom. Chris didn’t scold me at all,” the one who had done wrong protested quietly.

“Didn’t scold you at all?” Amber looked completely incredulous.

“Actually, just a little,” she admitted shyly.

“Ruby, you are really… Tomorrow you must apologize to Paula. I’ll make some desserts for you to take to her.”

“Do I really have to apologize, Mom? I didn’t do anything that serious. If Chris hadn’t told anyone, no one would have known.”

“Just climbing into their house was already wrong, and don’t think it’s okay that they don’t know. They are mother and son, they will tell each other. Tomorrow is Sunday, so Paula will probably be at home.”

“Alright, that’s fine. If you want me to apologize, I will apologize.” To put her mother’s mind at ease, Ruby agreed to do as she said. Seeing her mother’s relieved expression, she realized it wouldn’t be difficult at all to apologize to Paula.

At five in the evening, Tucker came to pick up his son. Ruby packed Flynn’s things into his bag to return to his father. That morning, when they had met, his clothes had looked neat and his hair well-kept. By the evening, however, he looked as if he had just come back from a battle.

“Ruby, don’t be shocked. On the way back, there was a snatch in front of the office, so I helped catch the culprit,” Tucker explained, seeing her puzzled frown.

“Yes. Are you okay, Tucker? Chasing after a thief like that is dangerous,” she said as she handed the bag back to him.

“I’m fine. I know some martial arts. The culprit was a drug-addicted kid who tried to snatch a woman’s bag at the company. The police have taken him into custody now.”

“Wow, you look like a hero!”

“Not that much, Ruby. Alright, Flynn, say goodbye to Ruby.” Tucker turned to his son.

“I’ll go now, Ruby.” Flynn raised his hand and waved to her.

“Next time, if you’re free, come play soccer with me again.” Ruby waved to Flynn before closing the door and walking back inside.

Seeing the two of them getting along well made Tucker feel happy. He had always worried about other people taking care of his son. He had thought about leaving him at daycare centers, but after hearing bad news every day, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. He had to rely on a neighbor he had known for many years—Amber, someone both close and trustworthy.

“Clara, I have to go now.”“What? Poppy, we’ve only been here for less than an hour.”“It’s really urgent. I’m sorry. You can go watch the movie alone.”“Not buying any clothes then?” Clara asked, noticing her friend wasn’t carrying any new outfits.“No, none of them were to my liking.”“Ah, what a pity. But it’s fine.”“Bye for now.”“Mm.” Clara watched her friend walk away, feeling that Poppy was hiding something from her. She must be secretly seeing someone, but wasn’t ready to reveal it yet, which made her seem so mysterious.'Watching the movie alone should be fine.'She walked to the escalator to go up to the cinema floor. The place was rather empty. The movie she had tickets for wouldn’t start for another half hour, so Clara sat down on a coin-operated massage chair to wait. She closed her eyes and reflected on the earlier events. The image of Trey with that beautiful woman was still stuck in her mind, no matter how she tried to shake it off. Why did it have to be like

Clara arranged to go shopping at the mall with Poppy, since lately she seemed to have something troubling her. No matter how Poppy asked, she never got a real answer.“Thor isn’t coming today, huh? That’s why you invited me to stroll around the mall like this. Usually, I’ve invited you several times and you never agreed to come,” Poppy remarked after seeing her friend at the meeting point.“He said he has some business, Poppy. But it’s kind of good too. Lately, he’s been visiting me too often. It’s fine if he doesn’t come sometimes,” Clara replied.“Don’t you like it when he comes by often?”“Uh… I do like it, but… let’s not talk about it, Poppy.” Just imagining him coming over and the passion in the bedroom made Clara shiver all over. Even though she tried to get used to it, someone like Trey felt far too distant from her. Sometimes she couldn’t help but wonder whether what happened between them was real or if she was just dreaming.“Is Thor stingy, Clara?” Poppy’s question made

He honked the horn loudly when Paul suddenly pulled her into his arms right in front of the condominium entrance.“Mr. Thomas, what are you doing?” she gasped, startled by his embrace and shaken by the blaring horn behind them.“Get out now, Clara. And don’t you dare tell Trey anything about us.” He didn’t answer her question, only fixed his gaze on the entrance. She shook her head at him, but the moment she stepped out of the car, her knees nearly buckled when she realized whose car had honked at Paul earlier.'You’re screwed, Clara…'Trey drove past her, turning toward the rear parking lot. And of course, she had better start preparing a solid explanation. Why did everything have to get this messy?Trey opened the door to his room and found a cold can of beer waiting on the table, along with a few snacks. Clara, who had prepared everything for him, sat quietly and demurely, as if she already knew she was about to be punished.“Are you tired, Mr. Smith? Would you like me to give

Clara had already moved into the new house. Both mother and daughter were satisfied with the rental home that Trey had arranged for them. Deep down, however, the mother still felt uneasy. But with the urgency of finding a place, there had been no other option. After she finished unpacking her things into her new room, Clara went back to her condominium as usual. The next day, she returned to work like normal.“Poppy, what’s wrong? You look a bit down today,” Clara asked her best friend that morning in the department kitchen. For the past few days, Poppy had been acting unusually strange—no longer cheerful as she always was.“It’s nothing, Clara. I’m just tired,” Poppy replied in a weary tone.“If something’s bothering you, you can tell me, Poppy.”“I told you it’s nothing!”“Poppy.”“I’m sorry, Clara. I just want to be alone,” she said, then picked up her coffee cup and walked back to sit at her desk.Clara had no idea what was wrong with her friend. Normally, Poppy had never ra

The big baby greedily nursed her breast. Clara could only sit still, arching her chest for him to enjoy. His large palm cupped her breast while his mouth kept sucking without pause. Clara looked at him and felt embarrassed. Why did he want to act like a baby now? She really couldn’t understand.“Enough, Mr. Smith… mm… you already did so much last night,” she protested, pressing her hand against his mouth.“So much? It was only twice, Clara,” he argued back.“Oh, Mr. Smith, you can’t just drag me to bed all the time.”“Who said I can’t? This is your main duty, Clara,” Trey replied, raising his eyebrows as if to emphasize her role more clearly.“Uh…” she couldn’t argue back and only looked uneasy. Yes, he was right. She had taken money for exactly this. That sorrowful expression made Trey pause. He fastened her bra hook again and sat up beside her.“Wearing that face—do you have something on your mind? You can tell me directly, Clara.” They had been together long enough that Trey

Chloe had been back home for a month, but she couldn’t help worrying about her daughter, even though Clara came by every weekend. Having spent her whole life together with her daughter, the separation left her feeling lonely.“Is Mrs. Brown home? Mrs. Brown!” someone shouted at the front door. Chloe hurried over, curious.“Oh, it’s you, Mrs. Lewis. Is something wrong?” she greeted the tenant in a rush. From his hurried manner, it seemed unlikely that it was anything good.“Come in first. The doorbell’s broken; there’s no sound when you press—”“So that’s why I had to shout. I’m just here to tell you, Mrs. Brown, that I’ve sold this house,” the landlord said cheerfully as he stepped onto the property.“You’ve sold the house already, Mrs. Lewis?!” Unlike the tenant, Chloe’s face drained of color the moment she heard the news.“Yes, Mrs. Brown. See that? I’ve had it on the market for years, and only today did someone finally show interest. I just came to let you know that I’ll have
