Chapter Thirty-Nine

"Rise and shine, Kitten." Maxim's whispers stirred Esper awake. She stretched and slowly opened her eyes while he stroked her hair. He swept away the hair from her neck and leaned down to kiss the mark but stopped. "Where is it?"

"What are you talking about," Esper asked as she sat up.

"Your mark is gone!" Without allowing Esper to answer, Maxim grabbed her by the arm and dragged her into the bathroom. He ripped her hair to the side, and Esper saw that the bite had vanished. A small wave of relief washed over her. She didn't know how or why the mark disappeared, but she didn't care. The universe agreed that Esper wasn't meant to be with Maxim.

"What did you do?" Maxim demanded.

"How could I have possibly done anything? I was with you all night," Esper defended, but it didn't matter. Maxim twisted her arm as he pulled her out of the bathroom. His nails dug into her arm, almost drawing blood as he yanked her through the penthouse to the dark room. When they arrived in
