Elara's POV

The assembly transcript arrived at nine-fifteen.

Aldric had arranged access to the official recording, standard procedure for inter-pack council matters involving the Ashford claim, he'd explained, which meant I now had a copy of two hundred wolves watching Damian answer questions for forty minutes.

I put Renn to bed at eight. Made tea at nine. Sat at the kitchen table with my laptop and opened the transcript.

I read it straight through.

When I reached Garrow's question I stopped.

Elara's POVDamian arrived at ten on Saturday with no reason and a bag from the bakery downstairs.I opened the door. Looked at the bag. Looked at him."It was open," he said."It's always open.""Then it seemed efficient." He held it out.I took it. Let him in.Renn was on the floor in the sitting room conducting his standard morning inventory — what was where, what had changed since yesterday, whether the puzzle pieces were where he had left them. He looked up when Damian came through and made the assessment and returned to the puzzle. Apparently satisfied."He's getting faster," Damian said, watching him."At the assessment or the puzzle?""The assessment." He sat on the floor — not the sofa, the floor, which had happened gradually, the way everything between him and Renn had happened, without announcement. He picked up one of the puzzle pieces and turned it over. "He approved me faster than last week.""You're becoming a known variable," I said."Is that good?""For Renn, yes. Kno

Selene's POVThe custody facility was formal and cold and smelled of institutional cleaning products that did not quite cover what they were covering.I had been here once before, years ago, accompanying my mother on a pack administrative visit. She had walked through it with the efficiency of someone who found all spaces equally manageable. I had thought at the time that this was composure. I understood now it was practice. They brought her into the meeting room at two o'clock. She looked the same. That was the first thing — I had expected something different, some visible mark of what had happened, the tribunal and the charges and three days in custody. There was nothing. Same posture. Same careful arrangement of her face. Same hands folded on the table in the way they always folded, which I had spent twenty-three years reading without understanding what I was reading. She looked at me across the table."Selene." Her voice was warm. Practised warm, the kind I now heard differently t

Then I closed the laptop and sat with my tea and the quiet kitchen and thought about a man standing in front of two hundred people and saying yes, that's fair to say on an official record without flinching. My phone buzzed. Damian.Finished. Twenty minutes.I looked around the kitchen. The laptop. The tea. Renn's puzzle pieces on the floor from this afternoon, not yet collected. A cardigan over the back of the chair.I did not tidy any of it.Alright, I sent back.---He kn

Damian's POVThe hall held two hundred people and it was full.Standing room at the back. Every council member present, seated in the front row in the formal arrangement that indicated this was a matter of official record. Pack families filling the middle rows — the betas, the gammas, the senior omegas who had been part of this pack for decades and had heard the tribunal coverage and come here tonight to understand what it meant for them.Bret stood at the side wall with his arms folded. He had told me that morning that the turnout would be significant. He had not told me it would be this.I stood at the front and looked at the room. Two hundred wolves who had been born into this pack or chosen it, who paid their dues and raised their children and managed their businesses inside the territory structures I was responsible for maintaining. They had watched the tribunal coverage and read the Interpack Chronicle and spoken to each other for three days and now they were here, in person, wa

Elara's POVCaden called at two in the afternoon on Friday."It's happening," he said. "Now. Damian's enforcement team is at the Voss house."I put down the inter-pack council document I'd been reading."Yvonne?" I said."Formal pack charges. Forgery, falsification of death records, abuse of administrative authority." A pause. "Murder, Elara. They filed murder."I sat very still."She's being taken into pack custody," he said. "Roland is at the house. He's watching from the courtyard. He's not — he's just watching.""And Selene?""Her office called her this morning. She was informed before it happened." A pause. "She said alright."I looked at the window. The ordinary street. The bookshop. A man walking a dog."Alright," I said."Are you?"I thought about it honestly. "I don't know yet. Ask me in an hour."I ended the call.Renn was on the floor with his wooden puzzle, working a piece with focused determination. He had been at it for twenty minutes. The puzzle had six pieces. He had s

Damian's POVBret was in my office at six, seated, with a coffee and a stack of correspondence that had apparently arrived before dawn. He looked up when I came through the door with the expression he reserved for situations that required him to deliver a significant amount of information without editorial comment."How bad?" I said.He handed me the stack.I sat down and read.Three statements of council support — Councilmen Reth, Aldana, and Prue, all measured, all carefully worded to affirm the Alpha's authority without specifically endorsing the bloodright claim. One statement of silence from two others who had clearly decided that waiting was safer than speaking. And one formal request, from Councilman Dray, for a review of my endorsement on grounds of acting without council consultation.I set the stack down. "Dray.""He filed it at four this morning," Bret said. "Which means he drafted it before the tribunal ended.""He knew what I was going to do.""He knew what you were likel
