Chapter 4

Author: Rainy Bell
Selene stood before the mirror, her back straight as she radiated confidence.

The sales assistant couldn't stop praising her, saying she was easily the most fitting young she-wolf in recent years to represent the pack at the exchange.

Ryan's mood soared. He waved for the staff to wrap up every piece of jewelry Selene had picked. Even Father cracked a rare smile, and Mother carefully helped choose the right color for her shawl.

"This one's too dark," Selene said softly to her reflection, her tone calm but decisive. "Get something brighter. I'm representing the Blackthorn pack—I can't look drained."

The sales assistant nodded quickly and brought over several more dresses.

Mother hesitated, then said softly, "Pick one for Ivy, too. She's not exactly young anymore. Even if she's not going this time, she'll need it eventually."

Selene glanced at Mother without objection in her gaze and said gently, "Alright. Something simple will suit her better. Anything too flashy would just make her uneasy."

The sales assistant smiled politely. "Don't worry. All our dresses are purified—absolutely no silver. Even someone with a wound can wear them safely."

The word "silver" struck Mother like a hook to the heart, draining the color from her face.

She looked at Father, then at Ryan, her voice trembling. "The silver items… from the basement… did someone keep them last night?"

Ryan froze momentarily before answering, "No… Everything's still piled up there."

Mother's coffee cup slipped from her hands, shattering on the floor.

"Ivy!"

The expression on every face in the shop changed at once.

Father leaped to his feet. Leon was the first to dash out, and Ryan's face went pale, as if he'd finally realized something.

Selene frowned, sensing the danger, and hurried after them.

By the time they reached the mansion, a crowd of werewolves had gathered.

The front door had been broken down, with the locks lying in pieces on the ground.

Blood dotted the green lawn in faint, scattered streaks, and the heavy scent of hemostatic powder hung in the air.

An elderly she-wolf gasped loudly when she saw them. "You're finally back! The medical team broke into the basement around noon. They carried someone out, covered in a white sheet. The floor was soaked in blood. It was terrifying!"

Mother's knees went weak, and she nearly collapsed.

Father stormed into the basement and froze. Chaos greeted him—silver powder was scattered everywhere, streaked across the walls and floor, while traces of dragging and frantic rescue attempts were clearly visible.

Leon stood at the doorway, staring at the blood with his face ghostly pale.

Ryan was even worse. He was rigid, with lips trembling and unable to form a single word.

Mother clutched her mouth as tears spilled freely. "Go to the medical center! Hurry! The medical center!"

What happened at the Frostmoon Plains spread quickly through the werewolf world.Everyone heard that there was a daughter in the Blackthorn pack who was born with extraordinary talent, yet her entire family despised her. She was even nearly left to die in the basement. When she left for the Neutral Zone, she trained herself tirelessly until she became the most skilled hunter, as well as the most beautiful and formidable white wolf in the snow.Rumors like that traveled faster than any hunting tale.My parents, Ryan, and Leon became the laughingstock of the werewolf world overnight.Worse, the Blackthorn pack had hoped the exchange would strengthen their reputation. Instead, the scandal destroyed their prestige.Leon had been a strong candidate to inherit the next Alpha position, but the Elders judged him unfit. He couldn't protect his betrothed, and he let personal feelings compromise critical moments. Therefore, he was deemed incapable of leading the pack.Just like that, he lo

That night, my family tracked me to my camp.My parents, Ryan, and Leon all showed up.Mother's eyes were red and swollen, as if she had been crying for hours.Leon stood in the wind, his shoulders tense and eyes full of guilt he couldn't hide.I didn't invite them in. I stayed at the camp entrance and simply watched them.Mother spoke first, her voice trembling. "Ivy, we know you've suffered a lot over the years. But no matter what, we're still your family. Are you really going to turn your back on us because of the past?""The past?" I repeated softly, then laughed. "To you, nearly dying in that basement is just… history."No one dared respond.I stepped toward them, and for the first time, let all the words I had swallowed for so long pour out."I've known since I was little that I wasn't as good as Selene. Her wolf was beautiful, her claws sharp, and praise came to her effortlessly. But just because I was weak doesn't mean I deserved to be neglected."When I came home inj

The United Pack Hunting Council held its event on the Frostmoon Plains. The day I arrived, all eyes seemed drawn to me.It wasn't because my gown was extravagant. It was because there weren't many young she-wolves among the high-ranking hunters of the Neutral Zone—and almost none like me, with snow-white fur and a tall, lean frame. When the registrar called my name, everyone at the Blackthorn pack's table went quiet.Mother nearly leaped to her feet.Father, Ryan, and Leon all turned to look at me at once, shock written across their faces.Perhaps it was because I was so different from the young woman they remembered three years ago.I was no longer frail, no longer hunched over, and no longer keeping my head bowed by habit.Years of training honed my movements until each was deliberate, precise, and measured. Countless hunts and endless miles had sharpened the weaknesses they once ridiculed into something deadly. The first round of the public hunt began quickly. The Frostmoo

The night I left the Blackthorn pack, the moon was full.By the time the medics forced their way in, I was already slipping under, poisoned by the silver powder and drained of too much blood. The doctor from the medical center injected an anti-silver serum and packed my wound with rare herbs. That was how they dragged me back from the brink.Martha arrived right then, seeing the basement floor covered in blood and silver powder. She saw me curled against the wall, barely breathing. The color drained from her face instantly. She rushed over and pulled me into her arms, calling my name over and over. Her hands shook so badly that they could hardly hold me.Later, the doctor told me the shock hit her all at once and triggered a heart attack. Even as they strapped her onto the stretcher, she clutched my hand and begged me never to go back to that house.I complied.Once Martha was wheeled into the ER, I returned to the mansion alone and packed my things. There wasn't much in that

The morgue was silent, unbearably so.Mother was the first to react. She tumbled forward, clutching the doctor and almost shouting, "This isn't Ivy! Where's my daughter?"The doctor explained, "This woman suffered a sudden heart attack on site. As for the patient we brought in from the mansion, she briefly regained consciousness after the initial rescue. Then, she insisted on completing the paperwork to get discharged before leaving on her own."Leon's head snapped up. "She left?""Yes." The doctor nodded. "Before leaving, she requested that we focus on saving the maid first."Silence fell again.Martha had worked at the mansion for years, raising me in every sense of the word. Stern but kind, she always remembered to leave me warm milk and to move any silver-laced items from my room. When she saw me in the basement, panic consumed her, and she put herself in grave danger to help. And yet my family had only just arrived.Back at the mansion, the atmosphere shifted entirely.F

"She'll be fine," Mother muttered, trying to convince herself, but her voice trembled. "She survived after falling into a snow pit when she was a child… She'll get through this too…"No one in the car responded.Father's expression was dark, almost to a frightening degree. His veins stood out on his hands as he gripped the wheel.Ryan sat in the back with his lips pressed tight. He was still reeling from the thought of the basement filled with silver powder.Leon sat across from him. His expression was cold, with furrowed eyebrows and hands clenching in tiny, controlled movements.Only Selene remained calm, her usual grace untouched."Mom, calm down," she said softly. "Maybe the medics arrived in time and took Ivy for emergency care. The outcome isn't certain—there's no need to scare ourselves."Her words were steady, meant to hold back the panic that threatened to spill over. But they didn't ease the anxiety. If anything, they made Mother's tears fall faster."She said she wa
