Chapter Two

Aaron whipped out his phone and requested replacement watchers for the evening. She wasn’t going anywhere that he wouldn’t know about. Earlier today, while she had been at work. Aaron had fitted a GPS tracker to her car. An alert will be sent to his phone if her car moved.

With a smile on his face, Aaron strolled down the street towards his silver BMW. He glanced once more at the house before getting in the driver’s seat.

Aaron opened the window and grabbed the file from his passenger seat. Where had she acquired her knife skills? When he opened the file, he shifted his gaze to the content he had perused before.

Drew Pennyworth is a 24-year-old, height of 5 feet 6 inches, undetermined hair colour, and green eyes. Parents died by the time she was 16. There wasn’t anything about the parents and how they had died. Group home for both girls. Bonnie had been 10.

As soon as Drew had turned 18, she had left the home. Once she had been employed at the community bank for 6 months, she wasted no time in applying for custody of 12-year-old Bonnie.

It was a bare bones story. The reason behind her ability to use those knives was not provided. Something had happened. She exhibited excessive vigilance plus a heightened awareness of her surroundings. Like how she had lost her tails.

The street was illuminated by the headlights of a car. As he glanced upwards, he realised that Drew’s overnight team had shown up. Aaron started his car, waved at the replacements, he put the car into gear and left.

Aaron went directly to the pack house. When Aaron checked the time after parking, he realised he had missed dinner. The pack’s key members ensured they gathered at the pack house for dinner twice a week. Living at the pack house is something that any alpha with common sense would avoid.

Aaron’s dad only did it for the first year of marriage before moving his family to their own house. If Dad hadn’t made the change, he claims his wife would have murdered him. It was not possible to juggle a healthy work-life balance while residing with the pack.

Only a few lone wolves and low-ranking members resided at the pack house, but they made an effort to gather here frequently to maintain the pack’s strength. The pack house serves multiple purposes, including get-togethers, festive dinners, weddings, and pack meetings.

It’s a space where wolves can gather, socialise, meet other singles, or simply spend time with like-minded individuals. In other words, others like him. Werewolves.

Right now, he had an itch that needed scratching. But as soon as Aaron crossed the threshold, he knew there was no way he could sleep with anyone here. The smell of the unattached women made him nauseous. He was worried that he knew why. If he was right, then his life just got a lot more complicated. Fuck!

As he made his way through the entryway, he noticed that some wolves were still seated at the table, engaged in conversation and savouring their desserts. Others standing in clusters, talking and catching up on gossip.

Aaron spotted his alpha and older brother straight away. Several single female wolves hung off him. All the females in their pack, who weren’t married or related, were hoping Roland would pay attention to them. If not him, then anyone in the top hierarchy. Aaron saw a few females turn his way, but without realising it, let out a snarl that kept them away.

Roland looked at him in surprise and raised an eyebrow.

“Fuck off.” Aaron mouthed in answer.

The other eyebrow went up, before Ro turned to the women around him and said, “Leave us.”

Everyone else left except for Blair and Jade, as Aaron joined his brother. Aaron rolled his eyes at them. They each thought there was a possibility for them to marry Roland and him.

Yes, they sat high in the pack. But they did shit to his dick. All wolves are good looking. It had something to do with their genetics, so in this case of Blair and Jade, it had nothing to do with their looks.

Blair was a cunning individual who derived pleasure from inciting conflicts between men or wolves vying for her attention, later denying any involvement. She was only flirting.

Her eye was on Roland. She already acted like the alpha bitch to some low-ranking pack females. Aaron knew that his own sister, Piper, had lost her shit with Blair a few times and kicked her ass. Piper was on his team, protecting their alpha and the pack.

Piper was the current alpha female in their hierarchy. The situation would change once Roland and he found their mates. At the thought, his stomach knotted. Not wanting to think about that just yet.

Aaron turned back to the two females. Jade, well, she wanted him. Again very pretty, high ranking, strong. However, she was as dumb as dog shit and incredibly boring. This woman couldn’t hold a conversation with you unless it involved pack gossip and beauty care. Why would he care about the size of his fucking pores?

He needed a female that could keep him on his toes and he wanted on his dick. Jade took a step towards him. Aaron lifted his lip and growled. Making her freeze.

Roland looked at the women and said in his alpha voice, “Leave us at once.”

That made them turn tail and run.

Aaron snorted. It was another fucking indication, neither woman would ever be their fated mate. A true alpha female would recoil at the sound of their alpha’s voice and would depart gracefully to prevent angering their alpha, but they wouldn’t retreat like cowards.

“Any luck finding her?” Roland didn’t say Bonnie’s name. Wolves with their excellent hearing would be able to hear their conversation.

Aaron shook his head. He cautiously looked around, making sure no one was too interested. His neck began to tingle, a familiar sensation indicating that someone was observing them. He was unable to identify that person.

As he turned towards Roland, he realised his brother also sensed it. Roland stood up and signalled for Aaron to come with him as they made their way to Roland’s office at the pack house.

It was soundproof and checked every day for bugs by Aaron’s team only. Roland took out his key and unlocked the door. Roland switched on the white noise machine as soon as he entered the room to ensure that no bugs could intercept anything. It was wiser to err on the side of caution at this time.

It was known to them that someone influential within the pack was connected to Bonnie’s disappearance and the deaths of two pack members. It was connected in some way to the import business and the shipping company owned by the pack. Only high-ranking wolves would have the access to do something shady.

There were fifteen wolves on their list of suspects, fourteen to fucking many. Aaron had personally gone through the books. He couldn’t see anything that jumped out at him. They had to be cautious about who they approached to examine the books. There was a possibility of others being involved? They just didn’t know.

“What have you found out?”

“Drew, Bonnie’s older sister isn’t talking, or she knows nothing. I couldn’t smell Bonnie on her sister or in the house.”

“You went inside?”

Aaron gave a short laugh. “Only way I would have got past that little shrew was if she tried to take my nuts off first.”

Roland looked stunned, then started laughing. “How?” Was his only question.

Arron was unwilling to respond, but he recognised the necessity of informing his brother about the obstacles they were facing. “She saw I was outside, so I thought I would knock and see. Maybe Bonnie had gone back to her sister’s place. The little bitch had the door open, and I had a knife to my balls and chest before I knew it.”

Smiling, Roland asked, “what’s her background?”

“She is working in a fucking bank as an account manager.” Aaron felt his skin itching.

Roland dropped into his chair, unable to contain his laughter.

“It’s not funny Ro.”

“Sorry bro, it kinda is, you know. No one but me could kick your ass in the pack, but you let a human girl get the jump on you. She must be a lot different from Bonnie then.” Thoughtful now “Bonnie wasn’t a strong human, and she was lucky to even survive the transition. Did you find out anything in her file that could explain the need to know how to defend herself?”

Aaron rubbed the back of his neck. “No, I could ask someone to look deeper into her background. We have to be careful. We don’t know who to trust except the inner circle. Shit, we don’t even know that. We don’t know how high this shit runs. There’s more….”

Roland eyed him, seeing the worry on Aaron’s face. “What?”
