[Emily]

“So what are you doing?” I asked Lisa, whose eyes were glued to the computer screen, but she wasn't giving me an ounce of attention.

After a while, she finally remembered to answer me.

“We need to access a report of the budget and expenditure for last year’s marketing campaigns, but Mr Stradford isn’t around, so we're trying to see if we can access it on the database without his permission.”

“Oh, let me help then.”

After three hours, going through the data and running around from department to department, I was ready to declare today as my worst day here.

And we weren’t even halfway done. If I could rate today, I would give it a negative five-star review.

Just as I thought it couldn’t get any worse, the telephone beside my desk buzzed with a call.

“Hello, Emily from marketing speaking,” I answered brusquely.

“Come to my office immediately.” The line disconnected immediately, and I was filled with dread.

What does he want from me now?

I grabbed my notepad and walked to Ms Tasha’s office, but there was no one there. Her secretary directed me to the one he was currently using, which was a few metres away.

I knocked before stepping inside. Ms Tasha's office was more artistically pleasing compared to his. While hers was vibrant and warming, his was plain and boring, just like him. He was standing by the window, hands in his pockets, staring down at the skyline like he owned the world.

“You wanted to see me, sir?”

Elias turned slowly, his expression unreadable. “Ms Matthews, although I’d like to scold you for your lack of punctuality, we have far more pressing issues at hand. I’ve been reviewing the marketing analytics for the Lockwood-LensCorp merger campaign.”

I nodded, looking everywhere but at him. “Yes, I submitted those to the database last night.”

He held up a printed version of the report, flipping through it like a prosecutor about to present evidence. “And you believe these projections are acceptable.”

“Yes,” I said evenly. “They’re based on the latest market trends and competitor analysis. The figures reflect realistic…”

“Realistic or mediocre? Which one is it, Ms Matthews?”

I blinked but said nothing.

He closed the folder. “These reports lack ambition. You’re focusing on maintaining current market share when we should be expanding it. You’re thinking like an employee, not a leader.”

Anger mixed with fear prickled under my skin, and I said through clenched teeth. “With all due respect, sir, I’m thinking like an analyst who understands market saturation. We expand too fast, and we risk destroying our own campaigns.”

His mouth curved slightly, not quite a smile. “You disagree with me?”

"No, sir, I just disagree with bad analysis," my mouth spoke without my permission.

His eyes flashed, and for a brief second, the air thickened between us. He stepped closer, his voice lower now. “Watch your tone, Ms Matthews.”

I stepped back nervously, but tried to play it cool. He can’t see my weaknesses, especially how much I feared him.

I exhaled slowly, forcing a polite smile. “Understood, sir.”

He studied me for a while, then turned away. “Revise this and submit it before the close of today. You may go.”

I rushed out of his office as though my feet were on fire. When he’d stepped closer earlier, he’d scared me. It was a truth I couldn’t deny.

I was scared of him because I knew what he could do to his enemies.

How can I stay here for two more years?

[Emily]The much-needed weekend was over, and Monday started with a headache no kind of Advil could fix.I’d spent the whole weekend replaying the conversation with that devil over and over again, on repeat. Just saying his name felt like a bad omen. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw his expression when he told me I couldn’t leave. He had been calm, cold and very certain. The man could kill someone with a smile on his face and get away with it. That I was sure of; I’d seen him do it six years ago.If I was going to continue working at LensCorp with him around for two more years, then I had to come up with a plan. To protect Hayden, to protect myself. But I’d have to be strong, not to give him a chance to see my weaknesses.“Mommy, you’re making the angry face again,” Hayden said around a spoonful of cereal, bringing me out of my thoughts.I blinked. “What angry face?”He scrunched his eyebrows together, puffed out his cheeks, and gave me a spot-on imitation. I almost choked on my cof

[Elias]I gave her a flat look. “You always jump straight to that, don’t you?”“When it comes to women, yes.” She leaned closer, voice low. “Because you don’t do curiosity, Elias. You either want control or you don’t care. And right now, you sound very interested.”“No, I don’t,” I said, standing up, running my hand through my hair. “You’re just jealous she has an ounce of my attention.”“Maybe.” She set down her glass and stood in front of me, arms crossed. “But I know you, Elias. When something gets under your skin, you start digging. You won’t stop until you figure it out… don’t do that with her.”For a second, I almost said she was right. That day in Tasha’s office, she had looked at me as though she was seeing a ghost. She looked haunted, terrified and even broken. Something about that look in her eyes- was it fear? It intrigued me, and it did get under my skin. Why did she look at me as though she’d seen her worst nightmare?“Noted,” I said instead, turning toward the window.Ta

[Elias]By the time I finally left the office, my head was pounding. I loosened my tie and stepped into the warm night air. It was only eight o'clock, but it looked like it was already midnight. I walked to the parking lot, spotting my Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ a few minutes ahead, where I’d parked it this morning.I climbed into the car, pressing the ignition, before I sped out of the building. There was music playing, low jazz that filled the silence.By the time I pulled into the underground garage, I could already see three texts lighting up my phone.Aliya: “You’re late”Aliya: “Dinner’s getting cold.”Aliya: “Don’t make me come drag you here.”I stared at the last one. I could see her doing that. I chuckled before walking into the fancy apartment complex just around downtown. When I finally walked into her place, she was standing in the kitchen in that oversized silk robe she loved, hair in a loose bun, a glass of wine in hand and pretending she wasn’t checking the door ev

  • The Billionaire DNA Match   13~The Slave Contract[2]

[Emily]I never knew until now that there was a clause that required me to work for seven years. Was that even legal? At that time, I had been heavily pregnant and just needed the job and the security that came with it.“I… I didn’t realise,” I stammer. “I was…”“Ignorant?” He cuts me off again, his tone clipped. “I bet you didn’t even read the paper you signed.”My face flushes hot, wishing I could go back in time. Wishing this were all a dream? That I wasn't standing here with him.His gaze doesn’t waver. “Ignorance doesn’t nullify obligation.”I clench my jaw. ‘So you’ll sue me if I leave?’ I want to ask, but I don't.“If you breach your contract, LensCorp has every right to pursue legal action,” he continues, moving from his desk to stand in front of me. I subconsciously move back.“Legal action? For resigning?” I blurt out, without thinking. He tilts his head slightly. “You’re not resigning. You’re abandoning a binding agreement.”I stare at him, frustration and fear twisting tog

[Emily]The morning feels wrong the moment I wake up. There’s that quiet before the storm kind of stillness, the kind that presses on your chest and tells you something’s about to go very wrong. I don’t know if it’s instinct or paranoia. Maybe it’s both.I dropped Hayden off at school as usual.“Mommy, when I get home today, can we get ice cream?”“Only when you finish your homework first,” I say, smiling slightly despite the turmoil in my heart. He grins up at me, gap-toothed. “Deal.”I kiss his forehead, breathe him in, and tell myself to be brave. The bus ride to LensCorp feels longer than usual, every stop dragging out like time’s mocking me. The buildings look the same, the same busy streets, the same noise from honking cars, but everything feels different now. Maybe because I know he’s here, breathing the same air as me.When I reached the building, I almost turned back. My reflection in the glass doors looks pale with dark circles beneath my eyes. I hadn’t slept a wink last nig
