Michael's POV

"Vanessa, I've said it a thousand and one times," I began, trying to stay calm as she stood before me, her blue eyes flashing with an intensity I knew all too well.

"I have enormous respect for your family, for your grandfather. But you are definitely mixing things up. Debts of gratitude aren't paid with someone's life."

"I'm not mixing anything up!" she retorted, her voice louder than it should have been in that tranquil garden. She lowered her tone, but the fury remained.

"You know very well how much my grandfather wanted us to be together. He's terminally ill, Mickey. He might not see next summer. I wouldn't even be here, in the States, dealing with all this, if it weren't for his final wish. So, yes, I abhor this idea of you marrying someone else, when you owe almost everything you learned to my family."

The old guilt, the one I carried like a stone in my chest since I was eighteen, tightened. But it was different now. Now, there was something bigger.

Sophia's POVImmediately Vanessa touched his arm, an intimate and possessive gesture. "Mickey, leave her. She's upset. She's not thinking clearly. She's hurt, it's natural for her to act this way, that slap just expresses her true nature."Her voice was sweet, controlled, as if calming a tantrum-throwing child. But Michael reacted in a way I didn't expect."Stop talking, Vanessa!" he shouted, the rough sound cutting through the garden air. "You're the one who caused all of this! Can you just be quiet?"The silence that followed was electric. Vanessa recoiled as if physically struck, her eyes wide with shock and... something else. Something like betrayal. That's when something inside me snapped. Not in anger, but in a deep exhaustion, for I was tired of explanations, tired of psychological games, tired of fighting for a piece of peace that was always interrupted by ghosts from the past, hers, his, mine.I looked at Emma, still holding Lizzie, who was watching everything with wide, ser

Sophia's POVI didn't scream. The sound got stuck somewhere between my chest and my throat, turned to ice.Nor did I cry.The tears seemed to have evaporated, leaving only an oddly clear vision, as if I were watching everything from behind soundproof glass.Perhaps they expected a scandal. Tears, accusations, drama worthy of the tabloids my enemies would love.I gave them silence. It was Vanessa who moved first. Her slender fingers, with impeccable nails, touched her own lip for a split second, as if retracing the stroke of lipstick she'd left on Michael's lips. Then, she adjusted a strand of blond hair that wasn't even out of place. Every gesture was a brushstroke in a painting of forced normality. When her eyes finally met mine, a smile appeared, placating. It was a smile that said "calm down, I'll fix this," and it was infinitely more irritating than a mocking grin."My God, Sophia…" Her voice came out like a practiced sigh, laden with a condescending pity that made me clench my fi

Sophia's POVThe car felt smaller, the air heavier. In the back seat, Lizzie was fussing with a tired, irritated cry that was impossible for our ears to ignore."What was I thinking when I agreed to this absurd idea of coming with you?" I said, the words coming out harsher than I intended as I drove towards the Conservatory Garden.Emma, beside me, rolled her eyes."Soph, stop it. Lizzie has already settled down. She just wanted Kiko, the rubber ducky. I forgot it in the bag. It was no big deal." She turned to stroke her daughter's face, who was now sucking on her pacifier, eyes heavy."And focus. We're almost there."My heart was beating an irregular rhythm, a mix of anger, anxiety, and a stab of anticipated pain. We were almost there. I was about to see it with my own eyes.To try and push away the knot in my stomach, I turned to Emma."And about your mother, our conversation didn't end properly last time I asked. Has she called or gotten in touch again?"Emma's face darkened. She

Victoria's POVThe restaurant was a temple of glass and steel, suspended like an eagle's nest over Central Park, with a privileged view. This was where you came to be seen, and to see.An old friend, Lucas Thorne, was already at the reserved table, the best in the house. Seeing me approach, he stood up with that rehearsed, boring elegance of his and pulled out the chair I would sit in.A gentleman. Deep down, I admitted he had his uses. He was handsome in a dangerous way, great in bed, and knew full well the power his position at that oil company gave him. He was, in the end, a useful piece."Victoria," he said, his perfect smile revealing very white teeth. "You look stunning today."I sat down, adjusting the hem of my black silk dress without a hint of gratitude. "Only today?""Always," he retorted, sitting down. "It's just that today there's something different. An energy… more vibrant.""Anyway," I cut in, picking up the glass of sparkling water the waiter had already placed in fro

Alexander's POVHer slap hurt less than the humiliation of having let her get that close. But the pain served a purpose. It confirmed my facade was working. It was dangerous. It was unpredictable. As soon as Victoria's haughty footsteps faded, leaving only the echo of hatred in the hall, my face gave way.The mask of coldness dissolved into an expression of pure exhaustion.I ran my hand over my face, feeling the roughness of the beard, the warm sting of the slap."Damn it…" The murmur came out like a sigh of temporary defeat.Paris, with its chosen solitude, its exhaustive training, and its meticulous plans, hadn't prepared me for the immediate toxicity of being under the same roof with her again. She was sharper, more venomous, feeling like she owned the game because her father held the strings to my company. I needed to recalculate, and fast."And I hope Lila is doing her part now," I continued, looking out the window as if I could see through the city to the Morgan Holdings offices.
