Chapter 106 - To The Groom!

I yelped, scrambled back, and nearly tripped over my own dress. "What the actual..."

A man shifted in the sheets, blinking at me through a curtain of greasy hair. His face was hidden in shadow and half-bloodied. One eye looked sharp and clear; but the other was ringed with swelling and dark bruises.

I had never seen him before in all the time I'd spent around the pack, but even as I couldn't recognise him, I could tell that he was probably really handsome under all that bruising, but what the hell was he doing in my bed?

"Well," he groaned, voice rough with exhaustion. "Took me long enough to find you."

I froze. He was human, and I didn't need wolf senses to know it. His eyes were just a regular brown, not the bright, flashy colours werewolves usually had, and there was no scent of power or anything, just the stink of dirt and sweat.

And somehow, this stranger had ended up in my bed.

"Okay," I said, holding up my hands. "I know I'm irresistible, but breaking into my room a

"Well?" Mattias's voice cut through like a blade. "Have you?" I opened my mouth but nothing came out. My throat had gone completely dry. How the hell could anyone possibly expect me to choose?! Kieran turned toward me, and god, his face. Worry and fury and confusion were still there, but underneath it was something that made my chest hurt with guilt. "Iris," he said, and his voice was softer than I'd ever heard it. "Tell me you haven't fallen for his lies." "It's a little more complicated than that. Okay? I just..." Suddenly Mattias whistled three times, like he'd done a couple of times before. Then he straightened, looking satisfied. Like he'd just done something he was proud of. "Wait... What did you--" "Thank you so much, Elowyn. I couldn't have done any of this without you." Kieran's eyes cut to me, "Elowyn. What have you done?" Out of nowhere, humans poured out of the darkness—dozens of them, maybe more, faces smeared with mud and something dark that made them look like

Every time I tried to stay focused, something was bound to come up and distract me. I reminded myself I had only one goal, to leave this place forever and never come back. And to do that, I had to stop making these people my problem, because what exactly was I going to do about their god-damned mole? I'd already tried the library earlier with no luck, but it looked like I had to try again. There had to be something there about a way out of here. I took the familiar path to the dusty library and I slipped inside, hoping no one would notice me sneaking away from all the hammering and growling outside. It wasn't like I was doing anything useful out there anyway. If anything, I decided the most useful thing I could do was figure out how to not die in this world. But before I could start going through the shelves, I heard a strange shuffling sound, like someone was trying to cover their tracks. I stopped to listen, but then the sound stopped. Then, after a long pause, the door cre

That evening, I discovered that every muscle in my body was beyond fucked. My arms ached, my legs burned, and my ribs felt like they'd been violently rearranged. Rowan had called it "light training." If that was light, I was afraid of what heavy looked like. Still, I dragged myself through the motions of Luna duty, which mostly meant pretending to supervise while other people actually did useful things like rebuilding the burned council room and courtyard. Lyra wasn't around, thank God, but that didn't mean that the rest of the day was going to be peaceful. Because of course, I eventually went back to my room to try and recover, and that was when Kieran found me. He stepped into my room like he owned it, which he technically did. His dark eyes scanned me up and down, and I swear he could smell the exhaustion rolling off me before his gaze narrowed at the faint bruises showing across my forearms. "What happened to you?" His voice was deadly calm. I forced a smile. "Tripped. You k

"No. I will never let you reject me for this nobody." Lyra's voice shouted, pointing her finger straight at me. She stepped fully towards us with her chin high and her red hair catching the light. For once, the elegance in her every movement couldn't hide the rage rolling off her. Rowan shifted, but his hand stayed wrapped around me. "Lyra..." "Don't," she snapped, her voice trembling just enough to betray the crack beneath. "Don't you dare pretend this means nothing. I've stood by your side, I have carried the bond the goddess forced upon me, and I have endured your coldness. And now I find you..." she gestured at me, "...throwing it all away for her?" I bristled. "I'm right here, you know. If you're going to call me names, at least have the guts to do it to my face." Her gaze shifted to me. "Fine. You don't belong here. You don't belong with him. You are a mistake the goddess will soon correct." "Funny," I shot back, folding my arms, "because last I checked, your bond hasn't

Rowan shifted his weight subtly, his arm still hovering near my waist like he wasn’t sure if he should pull me closer or step back. Meanwhile, Serenya took two steps forward into the candlelight, her dark robes swishing against the floor. She bowed her head just enough to acknowledge me. “Luna. May the Moon Goddess's favour be upon you.” Her voice was respectful, but the undertone Iris could hear the disapproving tone in it all the same. “Serenya,” Rowan said quietly. “It's late. What brings you here?” She didn’t answer him right away, swept the room once again, stopping at his grip around her waist, before she finally looked him squarely in the face. “Alpha Rowan. With my deepest respect, your people need you on patrol tonight and Marcus is currently doubling his route to cover for you. I suggest that you please reconsider spending valuable time here, with someone else's mate.” Rowan’s jaw flexed with annoyance before shaking his head, annoyed that even though he didn't want t

I knew right then and there that the kiss should have ended when it started, as just a brush of lips stolen in anger and exhaustion, but it didn't. It didn’t, and it dragged me under instead, the fire of it burning too hot for words. His mouth pressed harder against mine like he was starving, as though I was the only thing that could ever keep him alive.I gasped when his hand slid deeper into my hair, pulling deliciously tight until my head tipped back, his teeth grazing my bottom lip in a way that made my whole body shiver."God, Kieran," I whispered breathlessly, the sound breaking between a laugh and a moan, before I immediately shut up. My cheeks burned as I blushed with embarrassment. I wasn’t even aware I could make that sort of sound. His growl vibrated through me as he answered, "Say it again.""Hmm, Kieran," I teased him, this time deliberately husky, even though my knees were turning to water underneath me.His lips curved against mine, but this time there was no trace of
