Ava:

The room was spinning, and it suddenly felt like I couldn’t get enough air.

“Go home, Ava.” He turned back to his desk, picking up his papers again. The conversation was over. And I was dismissed.

Just like that.

“And don’t come back here unless you’re invited. You’re a Rossi now. Start acting like it.”

I stood there for a long moment, staring at him. At the father who’d chosen money over his daughter. Who’d locked me in a room and forced me into a marriage and now couldn’t even pretend to care.

And I couldn’t figure out why he was this way with me, or perhaps it was because I wasn’t his favorite. I wasn’t Ivy. I was even close to her in his list.

Without another word, I turned and walked out.

Mom was in the hallway, clutching a teacup that was shaking in her hands. She’d been listening.

Our eyes met, and I saw how red-rimmed hers were. I couldn't even blame her anymore. She would always bend to Father’s will and stray from my choices.

“Ava.” Her voice cracked. “I’m so sorry. I'm so, so sorry.” She was sorry that she could do nothing. She couldn't even say anything against my father.

And again, I wasn’t surprised. My mom was submissive to the bone. Worse, she was shackled in this marriage with my father for as long as she’d live.

I couldn't look at her. If I looked at her, if I saw that guilt and pain in her eyes, I would shatter into a thousand pieces right there in the hallway.

In my case, she was just as helpless as her own mother had been when she was being forced to marry my father.

“It’s fine,” I said, walking past her toward the door. “I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not.” She followed me; her voice was so damn weak it broke something inside me. “You’re not fine, and it's my fault. I should have stopped him. I should have protected you. I’m your mother, and I—"

“Mom.” I stopped at the door, my hand on the knob. “Please. Just... please.”

“At least wait for a while, and have tea with me,” she pleaded.

I shook my head once.

She made a sound like a sob. “I love you. I need you to know that. I love you so much, and I’m so sorry I wasn’t strong enough to—"

I wasn’t ready to hear whatever she had to say, so I opened the door and walked out before she could finish.

Pulling my phone from my purse, I called a Bolt and gave them an address I’d found that morning, back when I’d still been trying to convince myself I was wrong about the symptoms.

✦✧✦✧✦

The waiting room at the hospital was generic, with outdated magazines and a fish tank in the corner that needed cleaning. I filled out forms with my new last name and tried not to think about what I was doing here.

I also tried not to think about my period that was now a week late. Something that had never happened before.

It was stress. It had to be stress. But I needed to make sure it was actually just stress.

Except I knew better. Deep down, in some part of me I was trying desperately to ignore, I already knew.

“Ava Rossi?”

A nurse with brown eyes and wearing purple scrubs called my name. I followed her down a hallway to an exam room.

She took my blood pressure. Drew blood. Asked questions about my symptoms. When was my last period? Was I sexually active? Any chance I could be pregnant?

“I really don't know,” I said, even though that was a lie.

She smiled. “That’s fine. We’ll know soon enough.”

I waited for what felt like hours.

The doctor who came in fifteen minutes later was a woman in her forties. She sat down across from me with a folder in her hands and a small smile on her face.

“Mrs. Rossi.” She accessed me. “Your bloodwork came back. I have your results.”

My heart was beating so hard I could hear it in my ears. Her smile looked similar to one people give when they are about to announce great news to you.

“You’re pregnant. About four weeks along, based on your hormone levels. I’m surprised you noticed the symptoms very early.”

I could see the doctor’s mouth moving, but I couldn’t hear what she was saying anymore. All I could hear was a single word, which repeated itself in my thoughts.

Pregnant.

Four weeks. My last period had been around two weeks before the wedding. Everything slowly started adding up, and the more it did, the more the dread in the pit of my stomach.

“Mrs. Rossi?” The doctor interrupted my train of thoughts. “Are you alright? I know this can be overwhelming news, especially if it’s unexpected.”

“I'm fine.” The lie came automatically. “I just... I wasn’t expecting.”

She nodded, understanding in her eyes. “Do you have someone you can call? Your husband, maybe? Or a family member? It’s not a good idea to drive yourself home after news like this. Or we could call a cab?”

“There’s no one,” I told her, and the truth of that statement settled over me. I didn’t realize when tears started pooling in the corner of my eyes. “I’ll be fine.”

She didn’t look convinced, but she handed me a folder anyway. “This has information about prenatal care, what to expect in the first trimester, recommendations for vitamins. I’d like to see you back in two weeks for an ultrasound.”

I took the folder with numb hands.

“Congratulations,” the doctor said again, still smiling like this was something to celebrate.

I nodded. And stood up, almost stumbling over, but she caught me fast.

“Thank you,” I muttered in a low voice and walked out of that office on legs that didn’t quite feel attached to my body.

I somehow made it to a taxi before my hands started shaking.

What do I even do? Where do I even go?

I…I was pregnant. My husband was unreachable, and I was all alone.

I was pregnant with Dante Rossi’s baby.

The same man that disappeared from my life exactly three weeks ago.

Ava:My head snapped toward the sound, and I saw her standing near a food cart, tears streaming down her face, her little shoulders shaking.“Belle!” I ran, pushing through people without caring who I bumped into. She saw me and her face crumpled completely. “Mommy!”I dropped to my knees and pulled her into my arms so hard I probably squeezed the air out of her lungs. But I didn't care. I couldn't let go.“I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry,” She sobbed into my shoulder. “I saw the balloon and I wanted to catch it and then I couldn't find you and—”“Shh, baby, it's okay. It's okay.” My own tears were falling. “You're okay. I've got you.”“I was scared when I looked around but couldn't find you two anymore,” she whimpered.“I know. I know you were. But you're safe now.” I pulled back just enough to check her over, there were no scratches, no bruises, just tear-stained cheeks and trembling hands. “You're safe.”Cecily appeared beside us, looking pale. “Oh thank God.” She crouched down too

Ava:“Belle, where are you? It’s time to leave!”“I’m coming, Mommy!” She shouted back from her room. “Let me just grab my shoe! It rolled under my bed, and I couldn't reach it! Just give me a moment. I'm almost there, almost! Nooo.”“Are you alright?” I asked, grabbing my things and stepping out of my room.“Oh, Mummy. My fingers pushed the shoe away instead of reaching for it.”I sighed, smoothing down my blouse as I walked down the hallway. She’d been buzzing with excitement since Monday and counting down every day because I told her we’d spend the weekend at the amusement park. She circled every ride she wanted and even practiced standing tall so she’d be “over the little height line.”I wanted this for her. A full weekend where nothing existed except rides and ice cream. I just wanted a day with no anxiety tightening in my chest whenever the phone rang.Just us.It’s been two days since Dante and I had the conversation. And ever since then, he usually came to pick Liam up while h

  • The Billionaire's Accidental Wife    CHAPTER FIFTY: GIVE HIM A CHANCE

Chapter 50: Give Him A ChanceAva:“Am I normal for trying to find reasoning behind his actions? And the more I think about it, I can't help but feel like staying closer to him would be safer.” Cecily said softly, stretching on the couch she was sitting on.I hadn’t been expecting anything close to these words from her; besides, last I recall, she despised Dante more than I could have ever imagined I did.But after explaining things to her, she turned silent and looked terribly perplexed.Cecily was the same person who once told me she would sooner eat glass than tolerate the man. Hearing her say something like that felt almost surreal.I shifted on the armchair, drawing my knees up slightly as I studied her face. She wasn’t even joking. Her brows were pulled together, her fingers unconsciously playing with the loose thread on the couch cushion.“I know it sounds stupid,” she added before I could say anything. “Believe me, I know. I’m the last person who should be saying this, but… I

  • The Billionaire's Accidental Wife    CHAPTER FOURTY-NINE: WHOSE FAULT IS IT?

Dante:I stopped in front of the door to my mother's room, and without so much as a thought, I knocked on it.“Yes, come in.” She said from inside, and I grabbed the handle before turning the knob and stepping inside. She was sitting by the mirror on her dresser when I stepped inside, already dressed in her pajamas and getting ready to head to bed.“Oh, wow, Dante, it’s you.” Her eyes widened a little, and before she had the chance to say she wasn't expecting me, I cut straight to the point.“Why were you at Ava's school today?”Her hand paused mid-air, the brush she'd been running through her hair frozen. For a second, I saw something flicker across her face. But then it was gone, replaced by that perfectly composed mask she'd worn my entire life.“I don't know what you're talking about.” She set the brush down carefully, turning in her seat to face me. “I haven't been to any school. As a matter of fact, I've been at home all day. You can ask the housekeeper.”“Don't lie to me.” My v

Dante:The moment I stepped into the car, Marcus glanced up at me through the rearview mirror.“Did she agree?” He didn't even need to ask; the answer was obvious from my expression alone.I don't remember being this unsettled in my entire life.“What’s the time?” I asked, and he checked before looking up again.“It's a few minutes after nine.”“Take me to the Rossi mansion.”His brows pulled into a frown, “Isn’t it late already? You want to speak with your mother?” He asked.I needed to speak to her. After Marcus had confirmed my suspicion that she was behind the note, which Ava never found, I had been planning on speaking with her. That was even before I arrived at Ava’s place and she told me my mother came to her school and threatened to take Belle.I was infuriated that she did it behind my back when she knew I wouldn't be able to make it back to the city in time since I had a business meeting outside. Also, I needed to speak with Nat because she hadn’t been answering any of her c

  • The Billionaire's Accidental Wife    CHAPTER FOURTY-SEVEN: LIVE WITH MY DECISION

Ava:He was hurt; I knew it, could feel it, and could even see it in his eyes. But like he said, this involved Belle. The only way I could possibly keep Belle safe was by staying as far away from him as possible, not by going to live under his roof and giving whoever was behind this more reason to want us gone. His throat bobbed, and he nodded slowly, “Alright.”That was all; I could see the moment his shoulders dropped in resignation. But even that wasn't enough to change my mind. I had made my decision, and I intended to stick with it.I'm not going to live with him, and that's final.I'll make sure to protect my daughter even if it's the last thing I do.Dante gave me a slow nod, and his eyes met mine; my heart picked up pace because of how soft and broken he looked.“Nothing I say would make you change your mind?” He asked.I shook my head slowly, and he pressed his lips into a thin line.I turned away quickly because every second I looked at him, my resolve cracked a little more
