ISABELLA'S POV

I slid my hand into my pocket, fumbling for my phone.

I couldn't believe I could get so mad the way I did some moments ago. I wished I saw through the trick in Carmella's words and didn't say so much to her.

“I'm sorry, Carmmy," I said, reaching for her hand and giving her a friendly pat. She was my kid sister after all, she deserved baby treatment.

“It's okay. We owe this to mom, right? We should give it our best."

I nodded, putting a call to Grey.

"Come right away,” I snapped.

"I think we should talk to Sandro now,” I turned to Carmella after I had ended the call with Grey.

She tilted her head slightly, gazing upwards as if she was considering what I said.

“That's a good one. I'm just skeptical about Sandro for some odd reasons," she answered. "We should be careful with every action we take, no gambling should be done. Sandro could be bought over easily,” she concluded.

“You have a point."

The room was filled with silence afterwards. The weight of what she said res

AMELIA'S POVIt's been a crazy day full of several activities. First it started with waking up late, then the applicant with the accent.A fast replay of everything flashed in my mind. The way she looked both amazing and subtly mischievous continued to amaze me.Then the meeting with the board members. The meeting was a stark contrast to my expectation. The board members showed their displeasure in my partnership with another company. At first I thought it was because they were not involved, but with time, I realized they were more concerned about the economic situation of the company.“I think it's not such a good idea to have partnered with another company at this moment,” one of them had objected. While I was trying to address the opinion, someone's voice broke out again."With due respect, Ms. CEO, it's not so pleasant to think that the company is offering to take charge of 65% of another company's financial costs.”For minutes, the hall was an abode for arguments, everyone thro

AMELIA'S POV“Have you forgotten that I'm your personal assistant? You should inform me about things like that?" Alex declared, raising his voice.Annoying was an understatement in qualifying how he looked right now. What did he think of himself? Not even the fact that staff and workers were probably hearing him made him drop his voice a bit.I kept quiet, my eyes fixed on the document on my desk, but my mind was not focused on it. My mind was distorted, disorganized, weaving back to the past, considering how I could have done it better.I shouldn't have included Alex in the affairs of my life? I should have avoided him at all costs. But it was difficult, I didn't have any choice at that time.“Look, Amelia. You would have to fire that lady, I do not consent to you employing her. She looks suspicious, don't you see?" He said again, the tempo of his voice increasing. AMELIA'S POV“How do you feel now, Mr Alex?" The doctor immediately asked us to take our seats. His face was masked in professionalism and empathy. Alex's voice was strained as he answered, lacking the usual rigor and liviness it used to possess.“I think I'm better now, doctor." I stole a glance at Alex, making a vivid comparison with his present look and how he looked while he spoke to me earlier in my office. He was now a shadow of himself. I had thought it was going to be something fatal when we had rushed him into the hospital earlier. His eyes were totally shut, his hands pale and his breath had started to decline. All thanks to the quick intervention from the doctor, it might have been a different case.“You should take your drugs as prescribed and regularly." He slid his hands into his drawer and brought out an envelope. He stared at Alex, then he shifted it to meet my gaze. ALEX'S POVThe whiskey burned down my throat with speed, but I barely felt it, not even as I swallowed hard. It's been over a week since the doctor broke the devastating news to me. His face was a mask of professionalism as he told me I had two years to live.At first, it didn't register, or maybe it did but I didn't want to believe it. I had shrugged it off, got myself drowned in other stuff, while convincing myself it wasn't real. It wouldn't be.Amelia's soothing words were also comforting. “Medical analyses are not always accurate," she had told me after we left the doctor's office that day.But since then, with each passing day, the weight of those words pressed down on my shoulders, dragging deeper than I had expected. Now, here I was, in a dimly lit bar on the outskirts of town, trying to act as if alcohol could erase the reality clawing at me or the pain which burned in my chest. I gulped another shot, surrendering my body to the effect that accompanied it down my throat. I

But when my secretary had slipped the invitation onto my desk weeks ago with an expectant smile, I couldn’t refuse. She had worked for me for over three years. She was loyal, dedicated. The least I could do was show up for her big day. Here I was, seated at the far end of a round table, sipping on a drink I barely touched. But leaving abruptly felt rude, and despite my discomfort, I had given my word that I would be here.‘I was already here,’ I thought, ‘

AMELIA'S POV“Could you drive faster, please?” I screamed at the taxi driver carelessly. “I am, ma'am. There's a speed limit around here, it is a Government Reserved Avenue,” the young man stated pleadingly. It wasn't that the car was moving so slow but the urge to get to the hospital consumed my reasoning. I looked at my reflection through the interior rearview mirror and I could see pain and grief written all over my face. The only thing which remained unchanged about me was my blood-red lip gloss. That has been the only lip gloss I apply whenever I go to work. I sent a glance towards my wrist watch, I realized I was 35 minutes late for work. But that wasn't what mattered most now. I had almost gotten ready for work when my phone rang, it was the hospital number. “Come to the hospital now, your father's health keeps getting worse,” the voice said sharply.“Arrgh! Finally,” I grunted as I alighted from the taxi, handing a note to the driver. The strong aseptic scent of the hospita

NELSON'S POV“But dad, I'm already 28, what else is the problem? Didn't you say I'd be legalized as the heir to your inheritance when I clock 22?” I snapped at my father, my eyes burning with anger.“But your mom says you must get married, son,” he replied pleadingly. “You see it's for your best, we need to ensure that you grow into a responsible child.”I kept quiet, I didn't say anything to his last words. Somehow I was angry at my father but I wasn't sure why. Maybe because he was too lenient to have allowed a woman control his life or because he couldn't fight to protect his son's interest, perhaps, because she was not my biological mother?Growing up, my father had always been too gentle. Unlike other rich business men that I knew who were always powerful and ruthless, my dad was the complete opposite.“I can't continue with this, dad. Why can't you all consider my interest too? Would you have me marry the wrong partner because of inheritance?”“Your mother knows best. You shoul

His towering height, his muscular arms and broad chest sent shivers to my body.“I'm fine,” I finally managed to respond before reaching for the door. “And… I'm sorry for bumping into you.”“It's alright,” he waved, a devilish smirk playing on his lips.I reached for the door in a hurry, humiliated by my reaction. I knew I admired the man but I secretly prayed he didn't read through my actions.Soon, the day's work was over. I picked my bag and was ready to leave the office. Frustration settled on me again. Fresh as ever I remembered that my father had less than 68 hours to live if I didn't get the money.I took a taxi and headed to Clara's place. CARMELLA'S POV“Tell me, baby, how did it go?" Isabella wouldn't let me sit before bombarding me with questions. I ignored her, slumping into the most available space on the sofa. My arms grabbed my heels, and with alarming swiftness, I threw them off my feet.A choking discomfort at the sides of my stomach reminded me that my shirt was still tucked in. I let out a soft whisper, rested my head on the sofa, mouth opened wide in exhaustion as I pulled out the shirt." Not even a welcome. You don't want to go back to high school to learn etiquettes, right?” I glared at Isabella, who stood over me. She looked obviously not concerned about the discomfort I was battling, she just wanted answers.“Well, well. I apologize. I was just… I was overwhelmed by the eagerness to know the outcome," she said, looking sober now.She disappeared for a few minutes, then she returned with a bottle of half consumed wine and a glass.“Here, have this," she said. “This should calm your nerves."It didn't

A silent painful moan escaped my lips as I struggled to balance my breath and my fluctuating chest. My eyeballs rolled from one end to the other when I saw Mitchelle come in.“Yeah?...” I said as my secretary came in, looking calm as always, exuding a smile that contrasted with my raging heart. I nearly forced a smile to hide my emotions.“I'm sorry ma,” she said noticing my unstable condition, her fingers knitted into one another, “wanted to remind you of the meeting scheduled with the board members.”Yeah. The meeting.I wasn't surprised that I had totally forgotten about the meeting which was supposed to hold a few hours away, a lot had been on my mind lately. Ever since Nelson officially agreed and signed the partnership proposal, I hadn't informed any of my board members.Although I was the CEO and I could carry out certain actions without their invol

AMELIA'S POVThe following morning, my alarm rang three consecutive times before I finally woke up. The previous day had undoubtedly being a toxic one with a touch of amazing experiences, but Daisy's intelligent act had made the difference.I sprang to my feet after the third ring of the alarm. Daisy was already being dressed for school. It was going to be a long day and I needed to prepare well for it. I hurried through my bath, my body seemed to smoothen as the cold water cascaded down my skin, washing away my worries in a temporary manner.Soon I was done, I hurried through my coffee- a daily routine I never dared to miss no matter how hasty I was.“Thank you for taking care of me last night,” I said to Daisy as I wrapped her in a warm embrace, squatting to match her height. “Remember to be a good girl at school. Mommy loves you.”“I love you too…Miss CEO,” she shouted after me.Such a naughty baby girl, I thought. The ride to the office was smooth as I pictured the events of the
