Blake looked up, his eyes hollow. "She said it was because she loved him. Because she couldn't stand to watch him throw his life away on someone who would never be good enough."

The words stung, even though I knew they weren't true. This was how Lydia saw me—as a threat to her son's success, a stain on the family reputation that needed to be removed.

"There's something else," Blake said quietly. "Something she made me promise never to tell."

Jules waited.

"She said if Scarlett ever got pregnant, it would ruin everything. That she'd never let some poor girl's bastard inherit the Blackwood empire." Blake's voice broke. "She said she'd do whatever it took to make sure that baby was never born."

The blood in my veins turned to ice. My hand moved instinctively to my stomach, protecting the life growing inside me.

Dominic turned from the window, his face a mask of cold fury. "She threatened an innocent child?"

"She said families like yours don't mix with families like Scarlett's," Blake continued. "That the bloodline needed to stay pure, powerful. That Scarlett's baby would be nothing but a weakness that enemies could exploit."

Jules looked directly at the mirror, knowing we were watching. "Is there anything else?"

Blake's face twisted with something dark. "The baby might not survive anyway. The stress, the trauma—sometimes these things work themselves out."

"You'd be okay with that?" Jules asked, her voice dangerously quiet.

"If it meant Scarlett would come back to me? If it meant she'd finally see that she belongs with me?" Blake's obsession leaked through his words like poison. "She's going to inherit the Reynolds company eventually. She'll need someone to help her run it. Someone who understands that world."

"You want to control her," Jules said flatly.

"I want to protect her," Blake snapped. "From people like him, from families like his. She doesn't understand the game she's playing."

Jules leaned forward. "And if she doesn't want your protection?"

"She will," Blake said with chilling certainty. "When she realizes what she's up against, when she sees that everyone wants to use her or destroy her, she'll come back to me. She'll have to."

Jules's expression hardened. "What else is she up against?"

Blake hesitated, then seemed to realize he had nothing left to lose. "The acid at the gala—that wasn't from Lydia. That was my family. My mother, my father, the entire Reynolds board. They found out about the Van Alston inheritance before I did."

My stomach dropped. "They knew?"

"They've known for weeks," Blake continued. "They have investigators, people who dig up information for a living. When they realized Scarlett was the real heiress, they panicked."

"Why?"

"Because she's about to become more powerful than all of us combined. The Van Alston fortune makes the Reynolds empire look like pocket change. And if she takes control, if she decides she wants revenge for what my family did to her..." Blake's voice trailed off.

"They'd lose everything," Jules finished.

"So they decided to eliminate the threat," Blake said. "Even knowing she's carrying their grandchild. Even knowing that baby would be the rightful heir to both empires."

The words hit me like a physical blow. The Reynolds family was willing to murder their own blood to protect their power.

Jules looked directly at the mirror, knowing we were watching. "Is there anything else?"

Blake shook his head. "That's everything. All of it. I'm sorry—God, I'm so sorry. I never wanted anyone to get hurt."

"But you were willing to let it happen," Jules said coldly. "You were willing to watch an innocent woman and her unborn child suffer because you couldn't handle losing what was never really yours."

Blake didn't answer. He just put his head in his hands and sobbed.

Dominic was already moving toward the door, but I caught his arm.

"Where are you going?"

"To have a conversation with my mother," he said, his voice deadly calm.

"Dominic, wait. We need to think about this. Plan it carefully."

"I've thought about it," he said. "For the last ten minutes, I've been thinking about how the woman who raised me has been trying to murder my wife."

The pain in his voice was almost unbearable. This wasn't just betrayal—it was the destruction of everything he'd believed about his family, his mother, his own judgment.

"We do this together," I said firmly. "Like we agreed."

He looked at me for a long moment, then nodded. "Together."

Through the intercom, Jules's voice crackled. "Should I start questioning Delilah?"

"No," Dominic said, his voice carrying the weight of absolute authority. "We have what we need."

Because now we knew the truth.

Lydia Blackwood hadn't just disapproved of me.

She'd declared war on me.

And she wasn't the only one.

The Reynolds family, Blake's own blood, were willing to murder their grandchild to protect their empire.

I was surrounded by enemies who'd stop at nothing to destroy me.

Twenty-Four Hours EarlierThe alarms shattered our almost-kiss like a gunshot through glass. For a split second, Dominic's face showed pure fury—not at being caught, but at being interrupted. Then his expression shifted into something I'd never seen before: calculating, predatory, absolutely in control."Damn it," he said, but his voice was too calm for someone who was supposedly trapped. While I was still reeling from the sudden noise, he moved with lightning speed to Victoria's desk. His hands swept across the surface, gathering random files, business correspondence, anything with official letterhead."What are you doing?" I asked, watching him work with surgical precision."Insurance," he said, sliding the papers from inside the manila envelope and replacing them with the desk files. The real documents—my DNA results, birth certificates, adoption records—disappeared into his jacket with practiced ease."Take this," he said, handing me the envelope that now contained nothing but Vic

The boardroom felt like a tomb this morning. I sat in the same chair I'd occupied yesterday, but everything was different now. The marble table seemed colder, the portraits on the walls more disapproving, and the twelve board members looked like they'd already made up their minds about my fate. Beside me, Dominic's jaw was tight with barely controlled tension. His hands rested on the table, fingers drumming a silent rhythm that spoke of nerves he was trying hard to hide. Jules stood by the window, her usual confidence replaced by something that looked suspiciously like worry. She'd barely spoken during the car ride here, just kept checking her phone and muttering under her breath. We all looked like people who'd lost everything and were just going through the motions. Which, if I was being honest, was exactly how I felt. "Well," Maeve said, settling into her chair at the head of the table with the satisfaction of a cat who'd caught a particularly fat mouse. "I trust everyon

The alarms shattered the moment like glass, leaving us both breathless and disoriented.Dominic pulled back, his face a mask of frustration and fury. "Damn it."I grabbed the envelope from the safe with shaking hands, my lips still tingling from what had almost happened. "What's the escape plan you mentioned?""Service tunnels," he said, already moving toward the study door. "Most buildings this old have maintenance corridors between floors. We go down instead of up.""Down where?""The parking garage. Jules can meet us there." He paused at the door, listening to the thunder of boots getting closer. "But we have to move now."We slipped out of the study and down the hallway, the envelope clutched against my chest like a lifeline. The alarms were even louder out here, echoing off the walls and making it impossible to think clearly."There," Dominic said, pointing to a narrow door marked 'Maintenance Access.' "That should connect to the service areas."The door opened onto a cramped sta

Victoria's penthouse occupied the entire top floor of a building that probably cost more than some countries' yearly budgets.I stared up at the gleaming windows fifty stories above street level, my stomach churning with nerves. "I can't believe we're doing this.""I can't believe I'm doing this," Dominic muttered, checking his watch for the third time in five minutes. "Do you know how long it's been since I've had to actually sneak around?""Since never?" "Since never." He almost looked excited about it, which was both reassuring and slightly terrifying. "My lawyers usually handle the illegal stuff."Jules appeared beside us, having finished her perimeter check. "Building security is standard. Two guards in the lobby, cameras on every floor, but nothing we can't handle." She handed Dominic a small device. "This will loop the hallway footage for twenty minutes. After that, you're on your own.""Twenty minutes should be plenty," I said, hoping I sounded more confident than I felt."Sh

The elevator couldn't drop fast enough.Dominic's knuckles were white where he gripped the handrail, his jaw so tight I was surprised his teeth didn't crack. Jules stood in the corner, muttering what sounded like creative ways to murder people with office supplies."Well," I said as we hit the fortieth floor, "that went better than expected."Jules snorted. "Better? They threw you out like yesterday's trash.""They threw me out because they're scared." The realization hit me as I said it. "Maeve didn't waste time with pleasantries or testing the waters. She went straight for the kill shot.""Because she knows you're the real deal," Dominic said, his voice deadly quiet."Or because she's been planning this takeover for months." I watched the numbers drop—35, 30, 25. "Think about it. Victoria gets shot, ends up in a coma, and suddenly her sister appears to question everything? That's not coincidence."The elevator dinged at the lobby level, and we stepped out into the marble paradise th

The boardroom looked like a temple built for money worship.A massive marble table dominated the center, so polished I could see my reflection staring back up at me. Twelve leather chairs surrounded it, each one occupied by someone who probably owned more than small countries. The walls were lined with portraits of dead Van Alstons, all looking down with the kind of disapproval that came from having their bloodline questioned.Floor-to-ceiling windows showed Manhattan spread out sixty floors below, making everyone else in the city look like ants. The message was clear—from up here, normal people didn't matter."Gentlemen. Ladies." The lady who introduced herself as Margaret Williams cleared her throat. "May I present Scarlett Blackwood, who claims to be the Van Alston heir."Claims. Like I was some kind of con artist.Twelve pairs of eyes turned to study me like I was a bug under a microscope. Most of them looked bored, like this was just another Tuesday morning inconvenience. A few s
