“Here you go.” I set his plate of toast, scrambled eggs and bacon in front of him, trying not to show my disappointment on my face. I think I was doing a pretty decent job of it. “You’ve sighed six times in the last two minutes alone.” I startled at the observation, surprised and a little embarrassed he had noticed. “Um, just thinking about the sad book I read yesterday. The protagonist didn’t deserve to die that way.” He just stared at me with a blank expression on his face. I started feeling uncomfortable after three seconds so I gestured towards his plate. “Food’s getting cold.” I told him. He finally looked away and picked up his utensils, heaping a large portion of scrambled eggs on his fork. I held my breath as he took a bite, heart beating fast in my chest. Chewing slowly, his eyes dropped close, a low rumbling sound emanating from his throat when he swallowed. He opened his eyes and went straight for the bacon next, crunching through the crispy strips in record time. Then he grabbed the buttered up toast and took large bites, making these strange little noises that stirred up my insides in a disturbing way. I was on my third blink when he took the last gulp of the freshly squeezed orange juice he had requested alongside his breakfast, and my heart tripled in speed when he set the glass cup down, anticipating the words of rejection. It felt like I was in a cooking competition, awaiting the judge’s verdict after tasting my food. It was nerve-wracking as hell. “My first instinct was right,” he said cryptically, looking up to stare at me as I stood fidgeting in front of him on the other side of the island. “It hadn’t been a fluke. The job is yours.” My eyes blew wide in shock, mouth dropping open. “Really?” I breathed. “Yes.” He got up, sliding out a notepad and pen from his pants’ pocket. He set them down on the island and tapped the notepad. “Put down your bank details. I’ll send this month’s pay by the end of the day. I expect you to use the rest of today to go about resigning from your current job and preparing for your new one. I’d have a list of the major tasks you’ll be expected to carry out as my personal cook by tomorrow morning when you resume 8am sharp, along with a list of rules you are to follow for the duration of your employment under me. Any questions?” I stood stock-still staring at him. Then I glanced down at the scraped clean plate, wondering what was so special about the food he had eaten. I hadn’t used any special ingredients or techniques. It was the same old way I had always cooked it back home for my sister and I that I did here. It was baffling. Should I have tasted it before giving it to him? Would that have given me an idea what was so different about my food that he was willing to replace his Michelin-starred chefs for an unprofessional like me? “I see we’re both on the same page then—” “Is it just going to be strictly cooking?” I blurted out quickly before he dismissed me. “Elaborate.” “I mean, five thousand dollars a week is a little bit excessive for just cooking. Not that I’m complaining or anything.” I rushed to explain, not adding the fact that it seemed a little bit too good to be true so naturally, I was suspicious. And I wasn’t even properly qualified too. “I just want to know if there are other stuff attached.” He cocked his head, feigning ignorance. “Other stuff like what?” I let out an annoyed breath, frustrated at his deliberate obtuseness. Of course, he wanted me to spell it out for him. “Am I going to have to use my body to earn the rest of my keep?” He blinked at me, the action slow and leisurely, like I was the obtuse one. Then he rounded the island and started walking towards me, each step he took that closed the distance between us increasing the speed of my heartbeat. Finally, he was only a couple of inches in front of me and I had to stop myself from backing up a step. Jesus, he was really tall. Or maybe I was just embarrassingly short. His scent enveloped me, a mix of fresh laundry, manly man and spicy cologne that created such a heady, delicious fragrance I became lightheaded for a few seconds. Head tilted up, I held his gaze as he leaned down to reach my height. “Make no mistake, Coraline. You are my employee. Just because you aren’t going to be working in one of my companies doesn’t make you different from the others. In fact, you are lower than them. Don’t think since you’re going to be in my living space that you can have personal access to me or that you’re going to receive special privileges. Once you go through the list of rules I’m going to hand you tomorrow, you will see that wouldn’t be the case at all.” He leaned back and straightened to his full height, giving me back my breathing space. “You are easily replaceable. Have that at the back of your mind at all times.” Then he looked me up and down with a hint of a mocking smile stretching one corner of his full mouth. “Also, never insult me like that again by implying I might be interested in someone like you enough to want to fuck you. You’re a child, not a woman in my eyes. Understood?” When his dark eyes stayed fixed on my face, waiting expectantly, I gave a shaky nod, my mind overwhelmed by all the cruel words he had thrown in my face. “And regarding the amount I choose to pay you, it is my money, isn’t it?” he asked the rhetorical question. “I can do with it as I please. But of course if you’d like for me to reduce it, that can be arranged too.” I shook my head with fervor. “Glad we understand each other now.” He smirked while I seethed at him. On the inside, of course. Was he aware I could easily poison him? “Um…” I hedged. “Can I still think about it?” I hadn’t actually accepted his offer. Now that I knew how unkind my future employer could be, I had stronger reservations about saying yes, even though the money could be literally life-changing for me and Ashlynn. He shrugged. “You have until you step out of my door.”CoralineGrocery shopping was the only part of my current job I enjoyed. Solely because I didn’t have to be around Alessio or his things while I did it.I pushed my almost full cart down the frozen foods aisle, searching for the vegetables section.Just as I found it and began perusing the shelves while grabbing what I needed, I heard the click-clacking of heels coming my way.“Oh look. If it isn’t the bitch who is trying to steal my man.”At first, I doubted the words had been meant for me. But looking around, I realized no one else was in the aisle. So I turned back to the stranger only to realize it was Georgina, the woman who had pretended to be Alessio’s girlfriend.I still didn’t know why she had done that. Except Alessio was lying. Then her words registered and my brows furrowed in confusion. “I’m sorry, I’m not sure I understand what you’re talking about.”She let out a string of Spanish words that were no doubt insults by the way she was glaring at me as she said them.“That
AlessioSomething was seriously wrong with me.Normally, I was a rational, levelheaded man. In both business and personal matters, I prided myself on making sensible decisions that yielded the best possible results.I was known for being logical. So why was it that ever since a tiny slip of a nineteen-year-old blonde girl entered into my life, I’d been anything but?I hadn’t been really conscious of my decision when I pulled Valentina upstairs to one of the guest rooms… or was it Veronica?I didn’t fuck the escorts I hired the next morning. They were usually gone by then. That was one of my non-negotiable rules. But I realized whenever Coraline was around, I tended to do everything the opposite way of what I normally did.I wanted to prove to myself that she wasn’t getting to me.That the whole time I was buried in another woman’s body, I wasn’t picturing her puckered nipples underneath her wet top in my car yesterday. Or fantasizing about sucking the turgid tips into my hot mouth and
Coraline“Was that your boss that dropped you off?” Ash asked the moment I stepped into our modest two-bedroom apartment, not even concerned about the way I was dripping from head to toe.“Yep,” I replied, popping the ‘p’ through my slightly chattering teeth.“Oh my gosh, for real?” she squealed.“He’s literally on his way to pick up a date as we speak so don’t be too excited.” I grabbed the hand towel she handed me and began drying off. “Why’s Marc here though?”“We planned a picnic date for today but the rain ruined it.”I shook my head at her. “Should have checked the weather forecast.”“Those things are never accurate, you know that.”I walked past her towards my room so I could take off my wet clothes, not bothering with a response. She was four years older than me and kind of like my polar opposite in appearance.Taking our dad’s features, she had brown hair and blue eyes while I took our mom’s with blonde hair and brown eyes. She had also taken his height while I had obviously
CoralineI spent the rest of my day after cooking for Alessio and his mystery date cooped up in the public library, researching for various online programs NYU might have.I had gotten a partial scholarship after graduating high school to study English Literature but had deferred it for a gap year because I didn’t have enough funds and wasn’t interested in taking out a loan. Now that summer was almost over and a new session would soon begin, plus I had a good paying job, I was ready to start classes online for my freshman year. Online so I could cut costs, and also work for survival.I was so engrossed in my research that I didn’t know the day had flown by till my phone began vibrating on the desk of my workstation.“It’s late and raining, Cora. Where are you?” Ash said when I picked the call.“Raining?” I hadn’t even realized that. Then I checked the time and saw it was twenty minutes past five. “Woah, my bad. Will be on my way now.”“Okay. Be safe. Get an umbrella too.” I packed up
CoralineIt was officially confirmed. My boss was mental. He looked ready to strangle someone as he burst into the kitchen, features stony and expression livid. It made me wonder what someone could be so mad about this early in the morning.“Jeez Louise, Ale. Have mercy on my poor fucking eardrums.” The other man in the room moaned dramatically.I had been working on Mr. Castelli’s breakfast when he had stumbled into the kitchen, looking like he had been dragged through hell and back.I knew a hungover person when I saw one so after he told me he was Mr. Castelli’s close friend and was just crashing over at his place while nursing a terrible hangover, I decided to make him a bowl of oatmeal with bananas and berries so he could feel a little better. He was telling me how he had made a fool of himself at his birthday party last night when my boss barged in, his foul mood ruining the entire atmosphere.“What are you doing?” His jaw was clenched as he directed the stupid question my way.
Alessio‘Fucking pompous ass scumbag son of a bitch.’She had uttered those words right after the door had shut behind me, with her hands curled into small fists by her sides like she had wanted to throw a punch. At my face if I were to hazard a guess.I had probably watched the camera footage with the audio enabled about 20 times, still in disbelief she had insulted me with such vulgar words coming from her innocent-looking mouth.Mouth that looked like it had never been kissed. Never been properly ravished.Everything about her looked pure, untouched. But the things she said, the things that came out of her mouth, were downright foul.I tapped on the rewind button but it went too far back and Georgina was suddenly on the black and white screen, strutting around my home like she owned the place.Anger surged within me so fast the heat of it raised my body temperature, fingers white-knuckling the edge of my desk in renewed ire.Coraline had let that donnaccia in and she had immediatel
