Chapter 3: The Ghost of the Past

The drive to her apartment was a blur of neon lights and a hollow, aching dread. The two pink lines on the pregnancy test seemed to burn right through her blazer pocket. Jade always dealt in facts, data, and hard logistics. But there was no spreadsheet that could prepare her for this.

She entered her small, minimalist apartment and didn’t even turn on the lights. She simply leaned against the door, letting the darkness swallow her as her mind flashed back to the day her life ruined itself.

Four years ago, the rain at the cemetery was a biting, freezing sleet. Jade, barely twenty-one in a threadbare black coat, stood shivering as they buried her father. They called his death an accident a tragic mishap on a slick road.

But the aftermath was a cold, calculated execution of her family’s dignity.

After the funeral, a predatory bank collector cornered Jade in her own home, demanding immediate payment for debts her father supposedly owed. When the man’s hands wandered where they didn’t belong, Jade’s mother panicked.

A heavy glass vase shattered. A scream pierced the air. A pool of blood stained the carpet.

Jade could still hear the terrifying sound of the handcuffs clicking around her mother’s wrists. Her mother didn't fight. She had just looked at Jade with fierce, sacrificial love and whispered, "Run, Jade. Find the Ashfords. They owe us."

But the Ashfords didn't pay debts of honor. They only paid for services rendered.

Two years later, when her mother’s lungs began to fail in a damp prison cell, Jade walked straight into Lucian Ashford’s office. She didn't go as a beggar; she went as a strategist. She knew the Ashford Group needed a secretary who could handle their darkest secrets, and she knew Lucian needed a distraction from his father’s marriage demands.

"I need fifty thousand dollars for the surgery," she had said, her voice pure ice. "And a monthly stipend for a private infirmary."

Lucian had looked at her from across his vast desk, his dark eyes tracing her sharp cheekbones. "And what do I get, Jade? Loyalty? I can buy loyalty by the hour."

"You get me," she replied flatly. "In your office. In your bed. Wherever you need a ghost that won't haunt you when the lights come on."

He had slid a single sheet of paper across the desk a heartless, clinical sexual compliance contract. It was the only thing that kept her mother breathing.

A sharp, loud knock at the door violently shattered the memory.

Jade jumped, her heart leaping into her throat. She dashed to her small desk, shoving the real pregnancy test into the back of a locked drawer. Forcing her breathing to steady, she smoothed her hair and threw open the door.

It wasn't Lucian.

A tall, brutal-looking man stood in the dimly lit hallway. He wore a tailored suit that cost more than Jade’s annual rent, and his face was a harsher, older version of Lucian’s.

Arthur Ashford. The patriarch.

"Mr. Ashford," Jade said, her professional secretary mask instantly slamming into place despite the terror screaming in her chest. "Lucian isn't here. He should be arriving at your residence shortly."

"I know exactly where my son is, Jade," Arthur said, shoving past her into the apartment without an invitation. He sneered at the small space. "I’m not here for him. I’m here for the girl who thinks she’s more than a footnote in his ledger."

Jade closed the door, her hands trembling violently behind her back. "I don’t understand."

Arthur turned, his eyes narrowing into lethal slits. "My wife found a silk scarf in Lucian's car. Subtle. Exactly the kind of thing a clever girl leaves behind to mark her territory. Victoria Stirling is back, Jade. Her family controls the ports we need to expand. Do you understand the math of that?"

"I am his secretary, sir. I understand the math perfectly."

"Then understand this," Arthur growled, stepping so close his suffocating presence filled the room. "Lucian is a reckless boy. He likes to play with fire because he thinks he can’t be burned. But I built the furnace. If you become a distraction that threatens the Stirling alliance, I won't just fire you."

He reached out, his thick fingers clamping around her chin with brutal, biting force. It mirrored the way Lucian held her, but it was entirely stripped of Lucian's heat.

"I remember your father, Jade. He was a loyal dog. But even loyal dogs get put down when they bark too loud. Don't make me remind you how your mother ended up in that prison cell."

The blood drained completely from Jade’s face. "Is that a threat, Mr. Ashford?"

"It’s a forecast," Arthur sneered, letting go and wiping his hand on a silk handkerchief as if she had soiled him. "Stay in your place. Fulfill your contract. But the moment you think you can grow a heart or a legacy inside this arrangement, you’ll find out how cold the world can get."

He turned and slammed the door behind him.

Jade sank straight to the floor, her knees completely giving out. She clutched her stomach, the weight of the two pink lines in her desk drawer feeling like an absolute death warrant.

An hour later, the door swung open again. This time, it was Lucian.

He strode in with his usual, heavy arrogance, tossing his coat onto her sofa. He looked deeply agitated, his tie already loosened, the faint scent of his father’s expensive cigars clinging to his clothes.

"My father is in a foul mood," Lucian muttered, marching directly toward her. He didn't even notice how pale she was. "He’s obsessed with this Victoria marriage. He thinks I’m hiding something from him."

He reached out, his strong arms wrapping around her waist, dragging her up and flush against his hard chest as he pulled her toward the bedroom. "I need you to make me forget his voice, Jade. Now."

Jade stood completely rigid in his arms. Normally, she would comply with the cold, mechanical indifference he claimed to hate but constantly relied on. But with Arthur’s brutal threats ringing in her ears and a secret life growing inside her, she felt a wave of pure, unadulterated panic.

"Lucian, wait," she whispered, her hands pressing hard against his bare chest to hold him back.

"I didn't pay for wait," he murmured, his lips pressing hungrily against the sensitive skin of her neck, his breath burning hot.

Jade closed her eyes. The friction between them was suffocating. She could tell him right now. She could confess about the test, his father’s terrifying visit, and the fear consuming her. But she remembered his cold words from the hotel: I don't believe in accidents.

If she told him, he would think she was trying to trap him. And if Arthur found out, she and her mother would be erased.

"If you want me tonight, Lucian," Jade said, her voice cracking as she forcefully pulled her face away from his lips, "it’s going to cost you more than the contract."

Lucian froze instantly. His dark eyes snapped to hers, a dangerous, possessive flicker of interest crossing his face. "Are you trying to renegotiate with me, Jade? That is a very dangerous game."

"I’m not renegotiating," she whispered, her heart breaking into pieces as she looked at the man she secretly loved but could never trust. "I’m surviving."

Turning her back to him, she began to slide her dress down, her hands shaking violently. She stepped right back into the role of his secret lover, bracing her soul for a war she wasn't sure she could win.

The plastic bag containing the digital recorder felt heavy, cold, and entirely lethal against Jade’s palms. The air inside the Apapa Star’s auxiliary generator room seemed to vanish, leaving only the thick, suffocating reek of hydraulic fluid, salt, and the burning friction of Lucian’s proximity. He hadn't moved. His massive six-foot-four frame still loomed over her, his hands pinned against the steel safe on either side of her waist, but his obsidian eyes had turned into absolute stone. The dark, possessive reverence that had filled his face a moment ago was completely gone, replaced by the lethal, calculating mask of the Ashford CEO."Jade," Lucian growled, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly vibration that caused the iron floorboards to hum beneath their boots. "Drop the bag. It’s an extraction trap. My father has been sitting in a federal cell for forty-eight hours; he engineered this deployment weeks ago to fracture my yard the moment we cleared the tarmac."Jade didn't look

The private pier at Berth 3 didn't look like a multi-billion-dollar corporate asset; it looked like a wet graveyard of iron and fog.By 4:15 AM, the Manhattan storm had deteriorated into a thick, freezing mist that rolled off the East River, turning the towering stacks of shipping containers into black, geometric monoliths. The primary power transformers were still dead, leaving the entire five-acre tarmac illuminated only by the aggressive, sweeping white halogens of the automated straddle carriers Jade had hijacked hours before. The Apapa Star groaned against its heavy rubber bumpers, the massive container ship rising and falling in the black swells like a captured leviathan. The door of the armored executive SUV clicked open, and Jade Sinclair stepped onto the wet concrete. The freezing mist hit her face instantly, but she didn't flinch. Her charcoal-grey blazer was buttoned tight, her fingers locked around her administrative tablet. The golden light filtering through the sixty-first-floor windows did not bring warmth; it brought a stark, surgical clarity. The primary boardroom was dead silent, the smell of burnt electrical transformers from the Brooklyn docks still lingering faintly in the air filtration vents.Jade Sinclair sat at her auxiliary console, her fingers moving across the glass interface with the unhurried precision of a high-frequency algorithm. Her charcoal-grey blazer was pristine, her posture unyielding. On the main projection wall, the global logistics ticker had finally stabilized, the sharp red spikes of the previous night’s trans-Atlantic war completely flattened into steady, emerald-green lines. The Ashford-Sinclair empire was live. The data mirrors extracted from the Apapa Star were fully fused to the domestic ledger.Yet, as Jade executed the final system-wide compliance sweep, a tiny, localized anomaly flashed at the very bottom of her directory. It wasn't an external hack, nor was it a li

The silence that followed Jade’s announcement was heavy, absolute, and suffocating. On the sixty-first floor, the only sound was the distant, muffled chime of the 7:00 AM market bell echoing up from the institutional trading floors below a world away from the bloodless slaughter taking place within the executive suite. The emerald-green data sheets continued their steady, relentless scroll across the thirty-foot quartzite table, illuminating the pale, frozen faces of the three London solicitors.Eleanor Stirling-Ashford stood perfectly still at the foot of the table, her gloved hands locking onto the back of a leather boardroom chair to anchor herself against the physical weight of the data columns flashing behind her. The flawless, aristocratic mask she had worn for forty years had completely disintegrated, exposing the raw, ugly desperation of an empire builder who had just watched her foundations vanish into a digital void."This is an unverified data breach," the senior solicitor

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Baby    Chapter 21: The Morning Bell

The storm that had battered Manhattan all night finally broke at 6:45 AM, leaving behind a heavy, low-hanging mist that clung to the upper glass panels of the Ashford Group headquarters. The grey morning light did not illuminate the sixty-first floor so much as it exposed it, casting cold, sterile shadows across the polished quartzite tables and the immaculate marble hallways. The air filtration system hummed its flat, mechanical rhythm, maintaining that rigid sixty-eight degrees, smelling faintly of expensive floor wax and stale espresso. It was a brand new day on the trading floor, but the atmosphere inside the executive suite felt less like the start of a business week and more like the pristine silence of a freshly cleared battlefield.Jade Sinclair stood behind her auxiliary desk, her movements fluid and utterly deliberate as she organized the morning’s physical briefs. Her charcoal-grey blazer was back on, the fabric sharp and entirely free of creases, her black silk shirt butto

The digital countdown timer on Jade Sinclair’s central console did not slow for the physical chaos unfolding across the black, rain-swept harbor water of the Brooklyn terminal. It pulsated in a cold, unyielding amber, the numbers dropping with the clinical, merciless indifference of an automated liquidation sequence. Every fraction of a second that ticked away felt like a physical weight pressing down into the quiet sanctuary of the sixty-first-floor executive boardroom. Outside, the Manhattan skyline was completely swallowed by an ink-black storm, sheets of torrential rain slamming against the smoked glass panels with a relentless, metallic roar. Inside, the only reality was the brilliant, bleeding light of the interface screens, casting long green and amber shadows across the thirty-foot slab of polished black quartzite."I’m holding the tactical tablet flat against the auxiliary bulkhead, Jade," Lucian’s voice tore through the encrypted audio link, a raw, breathless growl that vibr
