—Mabel—

A bullet of panic rose in my throat as I jerked to my feet.

“The kids? What about the kids?”

Mrs. Chukwuemeka drew a breath. “They've refused to go to school, have been throwing tantrums asking to see you.”

Relief swept through me. I lowered my cutlery on the table and dragged a hand across my face.

“Oh, okay. I'm coming right now.”

I ended the call, grabbed my purse, and headed out immediately.

The elevator opened automatically as I approached. After I stepped in, it closed and began its smooth descent to the parking space.

Alec was right, my convoy was waiting in his private parking space. The head of my bodyguards opened the door and I slid into the backseat of the lead car.

We steered out of Alec's garage, drove past the security personnel stationed at its entrance— and melted into the streets of Washington DC.

Traffic was light at the moment—understandable because this was a little past rush hour. Almost 10 am.

My phone rang again, it was Mrs. Chukwuemeka.

—Mabel—Hawaii was gradually becoming my favorite place. The kids’ laughter carried across the waves. Alec just finished crafting toy boats for them, and now they were racing them across the water.Fizzy barked with excitement.“Mommy! Look,” Eloise called.Shifting on the lounge chair, I waved to them before turning back to my tablet propped awkwardly against my belly. My due stomach left little room, forcing me to tilt the screen just so I could see.Mama Emelda and Veronica were showing off their cooking skills.“Mmm,” Mama Emelda moaned as she tasted the sauce, then leaned closer to the screen. “This is delicious, Mabel. I wish you were here to taste it yourself.”Mama Veronica snapped her fingers. “Or perhaps we could package some up and send it to you by dinner. What good is a private jet if not for that?”I chuckled. “No, no. Don’t go through all that trouble. I’ll settle for the recipe.”Mama Emelda squinted her gaze dramatically. “Mmm...are you sure? “I think the baby might d

—Mabel—The faint chimes of wedding bells drifted through the air. White, fluffy clouds dotted the blue sky, and the trees still sparkled with early morning dews.Inside the dressing room of Château d’Étoile, I stared nervously at my reflection in the mirror. The glam team had come and gone, and I was wearing one of Émilie Laurent's masterpieces. The gown shone like frost-kissed petals in sunlight, its bodice sculpted into a sweetheart neckline that melted into sheer sleeves. The skirt flowed outward in a cascade of embroidered blossoms, a complement to the elegant updo and simple diamond earrings.I was also wearing the diamond necklace Alec gifted me that night at the penthouse.Smiling, Ruth came up behind me and adjusted my veil. We were the only ones in the room.“Are you nervous?”I clutched my bouquet. “A little. It still feels like a dream. I'm about to marry Alec Rivera!”She chuckled. “Just remember to breathe when you see him.”We shared a smile.“I know I've probably told

—Mabel—Pandemonium broke out the instant Angelina hit the ground. Her men spotted Alec and made to pull out their guns. “Freeze! FBI! Hands behind your heads, now!”They froze as red laser dots danced across their chests. One by one, they dropped to their knees and surrendered to the FBI agents who proceeded to handcuff them.I couldn't believe it. It was over. Angelina was dead—and my kids were free.“Mommy!!” the kids squealed and rushed into my arms.I caught them. Tears stung my eyes as I held them tight and kissed their foreheads. God, I missed them.Alec.I turned just as he walked to us, his gun holstered.“Daddy!!” the kids screamed and scrambled into his arms. My heart melted at the sight of them bonding, tears of joy streaming down my face.A team of agents moved toward Angelina’s body. Cameras flashed as they snapped pictures, documenting every angle before a medic crew arrived with a stretcher. Once she was zipped into a black body bag, they wheeled her away.Sniffling,

—Mabel—My breath caught in my throat. It was as though someone stabbed me with a hot knife.I was about to fall when a hand caught me. Alec.“Baby, is everything OK?” he asked. “You look frazzled.”Tears gathered in my eyes. I glanced at Kyu-hun, Ruth, and the agents with us— they stared at me with curious eyes.I was about to speak when the text burned into my brain:‘If anyone else knows about this, you'll never see them again.’I shut my eyes and shed more tears. My fingers trembled as I clutched my phone to my chest.“N-no, it's nothing,” I lied.Alec stepped closer and cupped my face. With his thumbs, he gently brushed off my tears.“Are you sure, baby?”I bobbed my head. “Yes, I'm sure.”He let out a deep breath and let go of my face.“I don't want you bothering yourself about this. We'll find them very soon, I promise.”He tried to sound optimistic. But I saw it in his eyes, he was helpless like the rest of us.We had no clue about the kidnappers' lair or the fate of our trip

—Mabel—The evening sun streamed through the hospital windows as my family and I bonded... from chattering, we played board games, and told stories that left us laughing hard.“Alright!” Alec said, springing to his feet. “Time to head home.”The kids groaned. “Nooo!”I smiled. “Come on, guys. Tomorrow's school. You need to go home and get some rest.”They hesitated, before walking into my embrace. I kissed their foreheads and held them tightly.“Be good children for Daddy, alright?”They nodded. “Bye, Mommy.”I waved as they crossed over to Alec. “Bye, my loves. I'll see you tomorrow.”Alec walked to me and claimed my lips in a kiss. “It's hard leaving you behind.”“It's fine,” I whispered. “Mrs. Chukwuemeka is here to keep me company.”He rested his forehead against mine, and we kissed again.Straightening, Alec gently grabbed the kids and headed out of the room. I watched them leave, my heart already missing them. That night, Dr. Priya and two nurses stopped by my room for the routi

—Mabel— A shiver coursed down my spine. The so-called nurses stalked closer— one cracking his knuckles. Like executioners, they grabbed my shoulders and pinned me to the bed. “No! Let me go,” I cried. “Alec. Alec!!!” Angelina burst into laughter. “You can shout, honey, but he’ll never hear you.” She leaned in, her smirk widening like one of those possessed Hollywood dolls. “Didn't I tell you? Men like him always get bored of women like you.” “No!” I thrashed. “Stay away from me. Leave me alone.” She straightened and brought out a syringe filled with a black fluid. My heart raced in my ears. “What's that?” “Your death. Did you hear that, sweetheart? Your death,” she purred, eyes glittering with malice. “I'm getting rid of you for good, and that baby growing in your womb.” I thrashed harder. “No! Stop. Don't touch me.” The men pinned me harder as Angelina approached with the syringe. Her gloved fingers scraped me as she grabbed my arm. “No, stop!” I begged. “Goodbye, Ms. Par
