Chapter Fifty-Seven: The Breakdown

The penthouse was quiet.

Julian was in custody. Victor had been found three hours after Julian's arrest, hiding in a storage unit across town. He'd confessed to everything. The FBI had enough to keep both of them behind bars for decades.

Henry Ashford's trial was set for the following month. The evidence was airtight. His lawyers had stopped returning calls.

The investigation was over. The headlines had started to slow. The city was moving on.

I wasn't.

I sat on the edge of my bed. The same bed. The same room. The same cracks in the ceiling. I stared at the wall. I didn't move. I didn't blink. I didn't feel anything.

Adrian found me there.

He didn't knock. He just opened the door and stood in the doorway. I didn't look at him.

"You haven't eaten," he said.

"I'm not hungry."

"You haven't slept."

"I'm not tired."

He walked into the room. He sat on the edge of the bed. Not too close. Not too far.

"You're not okay," he said.

It wasn't a question.

I didn't respond.

He waited. He didn't push. He didn't fill the silence. He just sat there.

After a while, I said, "I thought it would feel different."

"Than what?"

"Than this. I thought when it was over, I'd feel something. Relief. Satisfaction. Peace. Something."

"And you don't?"

"No. I feel—"

I stopped. I didn't know how to finish the sentence.

He waited.

"I feel empty," I said. "Like everything I've been carrying for two lifetimes just disappeared, and there's nothing left to fill the space."

He didn't respond. He just looked at me.

"I spent so long planning this. Dreaming about it. Living for it. And now it's done. And I don't know who I am without it."

He reached for my hand. He took it. His fingers were warm. Steady.

"You're Elena Voss," he said. "You're the woman who survived. You're the woman who fought back. You're the woman who won."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"That's not enough," I said.

"It's more than enough. It's everything."

I pulled my hand away. I stood. I walked to the window. I didn't look at the city. I looked at the glass.

"I don't know how to live," I said. "I know how to fight. I know how to plan. I know how to survive. But I don't know how to live."

He stood. He walked to me. He stopped a few feet away.

"Then learn," he said.

"How?"

"One day at a time. One hour at a time. One minute at a time."

I turned. I looked at him.

"What if I can't?"

"You can."

"How do you know?"

He held my gaze. Neither of us spoke.

"Because I did," he said.

---

The next morning, I found Daniel in the kitchen.

He was making tea. He didn't hear me come in.

"Daniel."

He turned. He looked tired. He always looked tired now. But something was different. Something lighter.

"Hey," he said.

"Hey."

I sat at the island. He poured me a cup. I took it. I drank.

"How are you?" he asked.

"I don't know."

He nodded. He didn't push.

"I've been thinking," he said. "About what comes next."

"And?"

"I want to stay. In the city. If you'll have me."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"Of course I'll have you," I said.

He almost smiled. Almost.

"I've been running for fifteen years," he said. "I don't want to run anymore."

I didn't respond. I didn't know how.

We sat there. The tea cooled. The city hummed outside.

After a while, he said, "I'm glad you're my sister."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"I'm glad you're my brother," I said.

He nodded. He picked up his cup. He walked to the door.

"Daniel."

He stopped.

"Thank you. For staying."

He turned. He looked at me.

"Where else would I be?"

He left.

I stayed at the island. I thought about my mother. I thought about Adrian. I thought about everything that had happened. Everything that was still to come.

I stood. I walked to my office. I opened my laptop.

I started working.

---

That afternoon, Claire Bennett called.

"The article is ready," she said. "The full story. Everything. It's going to run tomorrow."

I sat at my desk. I folded my hands.

"Good."

"There's something else."

"What?"

"Henry Ashford's lawyers have reached out. They want to settle. They want to avoid a trial."

I didn't respond.

"Elena?"

"I heard you."

"What do you want me to do?"

I considered the question. I thought about my mother. I thought about her journal. I thought about her hope.

"Tell them no," I said. "We're going to trial. We're going to expose everything. We're going to make sure everyone knows what he did."

"And if they fight?"

"Let them fight. We'll win."

I hung up.

---

That night, I found Adrian in his office.

He was on the phone. He hung up when he saw me.

"Claire called," I said.

"I know. Felix told me."

"Henry wants to settle."

"I know."

"I told her no."

He looked at me. He didn't blink.

"Good," he said.

I sat across from him. I folded my hands on his desk.

"We're going to trial," I said. "We're going to expose everything. We're going to make sure everyone knows what he did."

He nodded. He didn't smile. But something in his eyes changed. Something warm.

"Then we go to trial," he said.

I stood. I walked to the door. I paused.

"Adrian."

He looked up.

"Thank you. For everything."

He didn't respond. He just looked at me.

"Don't thank me yet," he said. "We haven't won anything."

"We will."

He held my gaze. Neither of us spoke.

I left.

I walked to my room. I closed the door.

I didn't sleep. I didn't try to.

I just sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall.

Tomorrow, everything changes.

Tomorrow, I start living.

I woke up before the sun.Not because of a nightmare. Not because of a plan. Not because of anything. I just woke up. The room was dark. The city was quiet. Adrian was beside me. His breathing was slow. Steady. I listened to it for a while. Then I got up.I walked to the kitchen. I made coffee. I sat at the island. The sky outside the window started to lighten. Gray. Then pink. Then gold.I didn't think about Volkov. I didn't think about Julian. I didn't think about Henry. I didn't think about my father. I didn't think about Mira. I just drank my coffee. And for the first time in two lifetimes, that was enough.Adrian appeared behind me. He poured himself a cup. He sat across from me."You're up early," he said."I slept."He looked at me. He didn't say anything. He didn't need to.We drank in silence. The kitchen was warm. The city hummed outside. After a while, he said, "What do you want to do today?"I considered the question. • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Nineteen: The Vow

Adrian asked me to renew our vows on a Monday. Not with a grand gesture. Not with flowers or candles or a speech. He asked over breakfast, in the same tone he used to discuss the weather."I want to renew our vows," he said.I set down my coffee. "What?""I want to renew our vows. Not because anything's wrong. Not because I want to start over. Because I want to say it again. In front of the people who matter. Without a contract. Without a plan. Just us."I looked at him. He looked at me."When?""This weekend. If you want."I considered the question. I thought about the first wedding. The small chapel. The simple vows. The people who had stood beside us. I thought about everything that had come after. Everything we'd survived. Everything we'd built."Okay," I said.He didn't smile. But something in his expression shifted. Something warm."Good," he said.---The ceremony was even smaller than the first one.Just us. Just Daniel. Just Thomas. Just Beatriz. Just Felix. Just Sloane. A ha

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Eighteen: The Peace

It came without warning. Not peace like a lightning strike. Not peace like a revelation. Just a morning when I woke up and nothing hurt. No tightness in my chest. No weight on my shoulders. No voice in the back of my head telling me I wasn't done yet.I lay in bed for a long time. The light came through the curtains. The city hummed outside. I listened to it. I didn't count the cracks. I didn't think about the past. I just lay there.Adrian was beside me. He was still asleep. His breathing was slow. Steady. I watched him for a while. The way his chest rose and fell. The way his hand lay open on the pillow between us. Close enough to touch. I didn't touch it. I didn't need to.I got up. I walked to the kitchen. I made coffee. I sat at the island and drank it slowly. The city woke up around me. Cars. Lights. People. I watched it all through the window. It didn't feel like a threat. It didn't feel like something I had to survive. It just felt like a city. Like a place where people lived.

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Seventeen: The Visit

The prison was two hours north of the city.I drove alone. I didn't tell Adrian. I didn't tell Daniel. I just got in the car and drove. The same way I'd driven to the cemetery. The same way I'd driven to my father's cabin. The same way I'd driven to every difficult thing I'd ever had to face. The building was gray. Concrete. Windowless. The kind of place that was designed to make you feel small before you even walked through the door.I parked. I sat in the car for a long time. I didn't move. I didn't breathe. I just sat there. Then I got out.---The visiting room was large.Tables. Chairs. Vending machines. A guard by the door. Fluorescent lights that hummed. The kind of room where people spoke in low voices and tried not to cry.I sat at a table near the back. I waited.Mira walked in five minutes later. She looked different. Thinner. Paler. Her hair was pulled back. No makeup. No jewelry. Just a plain gray uniform and hands that wouldn't stop moving. She sat across from me. She di

The firm hit its first major milestone on a Wednesday.I didn't plan it. I didn't expect it. Sarah came into my office that morning with a folder and a look on her face I hadn't seen before."We closed the Grayson case," she said.I set down my pen. "What?""The Grayson case. The man whose business partner disappeared. We found him. He's alive. He's in witness protection. He testified against the people who threatened him."I looked at her. She looked at me."We closed it.""We closed it."She set the folder on my desk. I opened it. The report. The evidence. The outcome. Everything we'd worked on for months. Everything we'd built.I closed the folder. I looked at the window. At the city. At the light."Good," I said.Sarah nodded. She didn't smile. But something in her expression shifted. Something lighter."We have six clients now," she said. "Three journalists. Two investigators. One family. We're growing."I looked at her. She looked at me."We're building something," I said."We a

I answered."He's gone," she said.I didn't respond."He passed an hour ago. In his sleep. He wasn't alone. I was there."I set the phone down. I looked at Adrian. He looked at me. He didn't ask what had happened. He could see it on my face."My father died," I said.He set down the pan. He walked to me. He didn't reach for me. He didn't take my hand.
