Chapter Seventy-Two: The Quiet

Nothing happened for three days.

No calls. No messages. No threats. No signs. Volkov had gone silent. The silence was worse than the noise.

I worked. I stayed busy. I met with Sarah Chen. Marcus had found the former Marlowe employee. He was willing to talk. Dana was arranging the meeting. Leo was verifying his story.

I worked through lunch. I worked through dinner. I didn't sleep much. But I didn't think about Volkov. Not consciously. Not on purpose.

On the third night, I found Adrian in the living room.

He was sitting on the couch. He wasn't reading. He wasn't working. He was just sitting.

I sat beside him.

We didn't speak.

After a while, I said, "He's not going to come. Not yet. He's waiting."

"I know."

"He's waiting for us to let our guard down."

"I know."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"We can't let our guard down," I said.

"We won't."

I leaned back. I closed my eyes.

"Get some sleep," he said.

I didn't move. Neither did he.

---

The next morning, Sarah Chen called.

"Marcus found him," she said. "The former employee. He's willing to talk. But he's scared. He wants protection."

"Where is he?"

"A motel on the edge of the city. He's been there for two days. He won't leave."

"Give me the address."

I hung up. I called Dana. I called Leo. I called Felix.

We met in the conference room an hour later.

"The man's name is Peter Grayson," Marcus said. "He worked for Marlowe Shipping for five years. He was a dispatcher. He knows the routes. He knows the cargo. He knows everything."

"And he's willing to testify?"

"He's willing to talk. Testify is a different thing. He's scared. He thinks Volkov will kill him if he says anything."

"Volkov will kill him if he doesn't."

Marcus nodded. "That's what I told him."

I stood. I walked to the window.

"We need to get him out of there. We need to bring him in. We need to protect him."

Dana spoke. "I can have a team there in twenty minutes."

"Do it."

She left.

---

Peter Grayson was a small man.

He was sitting on the edge of the motel bed when we arrived. His hands were shaking. His eyes were wide. He looked at us like we were either his salvation or his execution.

"You're Elena Voss," he said.

"I am."

"I read about you. In the papers. The trial. The evidence. The whole thing."

"And?"

"And I'm sorry. For what happened to your mother. For what happened to you."

I didn't respond. I just looked at him.

"I worked for Marlowe Shipping for five years," he said. "I knew what they were doing. I knew what they were moving. I just didn't say anything. I was scared."

"And now?"

"Now I'm tired of being scared."

I sat across from him. I folded my hands.

"Tell me everything."

---

He talked for two hours.

He told us about the routes. The schedules. The cargo. The men who came and went. The men who never came back. He told us about Volkov. About his habits. His patterns. His weaknesses.

He told us about a shipment. A big one. Coming in three weeks. The biggest one yet. Weapons. Drugs. People. Everything.

"Where?" I asked.

"Port of Marseille. A warehouse on the docks. Pier 47."

I wrote it down. I looked at Leo. He looked at me.

"That's our target," I said.

He nodded. He didn't smile. But something in his expression shifted. Something determined.

---

That evening, I found Adrian in his office.

He was on the phone. He hung up when he saw me.

"Peter Grayson," he said.

"You heard."

"Felix told me."

"Felix tells you everything."

"He does."

I sat across from him. I folded my hands on his desk.

"We have a target. Pier 47. Port of Marseille. Three weeks."

He looked at me. He didn't blink.

"You're going to go after it."

"I'm going to end it."

He was quiet for a moment. Then he nodded.

"Then we do it," he said.

I stood. I walked to the door. I paused.

"Adrian."

He looked up.

"Thank you. For not trying to stop me."

He didn't respond. He just looked at me.

"I learned a long time ago that I can't stop you," he said. "I can only help you."

I left.

---

That night, I sat in my office.

I didn't sleep. I didn't try to. I just sat at my desk and stared at the wall.

I thought about Peter Grayson. About his shaking hands. About his tired eyes. About the way he'd looked at me when he said he was tired of being scared.

I thought about my mother. About her journal. About her hope.

I thought about the woman I used to be. The woman who trusted too easily. The woman who died.

I wasn't her anymore.

I stood. I walked to the window. I looked at the city.

Three weeks.

Then this ends.

I woke up before the sun.Not because of a nightmare. Not because of a plan. Not because of anything. I just woke up. The room was dark. The city was quiet. Adrian was beside me. His breathing was slow. Steady. I listened to it for a while. Then I got up.I walked to the kitchen. I made coffee. I sat at the island. The sky outside the window started to lighten. Gray. Then pink. Then gold.I didn't think about Volkov. I didn't think about Julian. I didn't think about Henry. I didn't think about my father. I didn't think about Mira. I just drank my coffee. And for the first time in two lifetimes, that was enough.Adrian appeared behind me. He poured himself a cup. He sat across from me."You're up early," he said."I slept."He looked at me. He didn't say anything. He didn't need to.We drank in silence. The kitchen was warm. The city hummed outside. After a while, he said, "What do you want to do today?"I considered the question. I thought about the office. About the cases. About the

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Nineteen: The Vow

Adrian asked me to renew our vows on a Monday. Not with a grand gesture. Not with flowers or candles or a speech. He asked over breakfast, in the same tone he used to discuss the weather."I want to renew our vows," he said.I set down my coffee. "What?""I want to renew our vows. Not because anything's wrong. Not because I want to start over. Because I want to say it again. In front of the people who matter. Without a contract. Without a plan. Just us."I looked at him. He looked at me."When?""This weekend. If you want."I considered the question. I thought about the first wedding. The small chapel. The simple vows. The people who had stood beside us. I thought about everything that had come after. Everything we'd survived. Everything we'd built."Okay," I said.He didn't smile. But something in his expression shifted. Something warm."Good," he said.---The ceremony was even smaller than the first one.Just us. Just Daniel. Just Thomas. Just Beatriz. Just Felix. Just Sloane. A ha

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Eighteen: The Peace

It came without warning. Not peace like a lightning strike. Not peace like a revelation. Just a morning when I woke up and nothing hurt. No tightness in my chest. No weight on my shoulders. No voice in the back of my head telling me I wasn't done yet.I lay in bed for a long time. The light came through the curtains. The city hummed outside. I listened to it. I didn't count the cracks. I didn't think about the past. I just lay there.Adrian was beside me. He was still asleep. His breathing was slow. Steady. I watched him for a while. The way his chest rose and fell. The way his hand lay open on the pillow between us. Close enough to touch. I didn't touch it. I didn't need to.I got up. I walked to the kitchen. I made coffee. I sat at the island and drank it slowly. The city woke up around me. Cars. Lights. People. I watched it all through the window. It didn't feel like a threat. It didn't feel like something I had to survive. It just felt like a city. Like a place where people lived.

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Seventeen: The Visit

The prison was two hours north of the city.I drove alone. I didn't tell Adrian. I didn't tell Daniel. I just got in the car and drove. The same way I'd driven to the cemetery. The same way I'd driven to my father's cabin. The same way I'd driven to every difficult thing I'd ever had to face. The building was gray. Concrete. Windowless. The kind of place that was designed to make you feel small before you even walked through the door.I parked. I sat in the car for a long time. I didn't move. I didn't breathe. I just sat there. Then I got out.---The visiting room was large.Tables. Chairs. Vending machines. A guard by the door. Fluorescent lights that hummed. The kind of room where people spoke in low voices and tried not to cry.I sat at a table near the back. I waited.Mira walked in five minutes later. She looked different. Thinner. Paler. Her hair was pulled back. No makeup. No jewelry. Just a plain gray uniform and hands that wouldn't stop moving. She sat across from me. She di

The firm hit its first major milestone on a Wednesday.I didn't plan it. I didn't expect it. Sarah came into my office that morning with a folder and a look on her face I hadn't seen before."We closed the Grayson case," she said.I set down my pen. "What?""The Grayson case. The man whose business partner disappeared. We found him. He's alive. He's in witness protection. He testified against the people who threatened him."I looked at her. She looked at me."We closed it.""We closed it."She set the folder on my desk. I opened it. The report. The evidence. The outcome. Everything we'd worked on for months. Everything we'd built.I closed the folder. I looked at the window. At the city. At the light."Good," I said.Sarah nodded. She didn't smile. But something in her expression shifted. Something lighter."We have six clients now," she said. "Three journalists. Two investigators. One family. We're growing."I looked at her. She looked at me."We're building something," I said."We a
