mother watching her child die

Author: Cassiel Z
Elara's POV

My heart leaped into my throat. His mother, something had happened to his mother.

I quickly stepped out of the bathtub, water dripping everywhere as I reached for a robe. Despite everything that had happened between Damien and me, his mother had always been kind to me.

But she'd still welcomed me into the family with grace, giving me a set of antique pearl jewelry that had belonged to her own mother.

"Is she alright?" I whispered urgently, trying not to interrupt his conversation while frantically searching for something to wear.

She lived in France now, had remarried a distinguished diplomat and moved to Paris shortly after our wedding.

The thought of her being hurt or in danger in a foreign country made my chest tighten with worry.

But as I listened to Damien's side of the conversation, I realized something was wrong with my assumption.

  • The Billionaire’s Regret After His Daughter Died   He'll Take Full Responsibility

Elara's POVThe accusation hung in the air between us.My pulse hammered so violently I could hear it in my ears. He was right—I had lied about meeting Liam. But how could I tell him the truth? That I'd sought out my friend because I was struggling with doubts about our marriage, questioning whether I could move forward with him without first getting justice for Lily? That conversation had nothing to do with work and everything to do with my conflicted feelings about the man now staring at me with growing suspicion. But the accusation underneath his question—that I could orchestrate Isabella's kidnapping and torture—was something I would never, could never do.I forced myself to meet his penetrating gaze. "I swear to you, I had absolutely nothing to do with what happened to Isabella."The words came out stronger than I felt, fueled by the righteousness of knowing I was innocent of the crime he was silently accusing me of."I may not be able to prove why I was there, but I can prove eve

  • The Billionaire’s Regret After His Daughter Died   So You're Lying, Aren't You?

Elara's POVThe handbag was heavy, loaded with whatever expensive items Isabella's mother carried. If it connected with my face at that speed, it would shatter bones, possibly leave permanent damage. But I couldn't move.My body felt like lead, every muscle drained by the emotional devastation of watching Damien comfort Isabella, hearing him promise her that their memories would last forever. The bag arced toward my face, and all I could do was watch it come. Then Damien was there. He stepped between us. The move was effortless. Controlled. A human shield. He caught Mrs. Reed's wrist mid-swing with one hand while deflecting the force of her attack with the other. For the first time in hours, I felt like I could breathe again. He was protecting me. Despite everything—despite Isabella's broken hands, despite her desperate kisses, despite all those precious memories between them—he was still protecting me."Mrs. Reed," he said, his voice deadly calm despite having just prevented a vicious

  • The Billionaire’s Regret After His Daughter Died   She Kissed Him

Elara's POVWhen the paramedics reached us, Isabella stirred in Damien's arms. Her eyes fluttered open, unfocused and glazed with pain. She looked around slowly, taking in the warehouse, the police officers, the flashing emergency lights. Then her gaze landed on Damien's face.A piercing scream tore from her throat, raw and desperate and filled with such anguish that it seemed to echo off the warehouse walls."You took so long," she sobbed, her voice breaking. "Why did you take so long to find me? You promised... you promised you'd always protect me."She tried to lift her mangled hands toward him, the movement causing her to cry out again in agony. Blood seeped through the makeshift bandages the paramedics had applied."I'm sorry," Damien said, his voice thick with a guilt that tore at me. "I'm so sorry, Isabella. I should have been faster.""You should have!" she wailed, tears streaming down her dirt-stained face. "You promised you'd always keep me safe!"As he leaned closer to comfo

  • The Billionaire’s Regret After His Daughter Died   Victim Isabella

Elara's POVThe words echoed in my head. Victim. Isabella. My brain refused to connect them.Isabella, kidnapped just like I had been. Isabella, possibly dead.My heart began racing as the implications crashed over me like a tidal wave.If Isabella was dead, if someone had killed her... then this wasn't random. This wasn't some business rivalry or financial dispute. Someone was systematically targeting the people in Damien's life.First me. Now Isabella.Who was next? Damien himself? His grandmother? The restaurant suddenly felt too small, too crowded. The walls seemed to be closing in around me. My hands began shaking uncontrollably as my mind spiraled into panic. What if they came for me again? What if they were watching us right now?I could feel my breathing becoming shallow and rapid. The familiar cocktail of terror and helplessness that I'd experienced in that warehouse came flooding back."Elara?" Damien's voice seemed to come from very far away, though I could see him leaning a

  • The Billionaire’s Regret After His Daughter Died   what we did last night?

Elara's POVThe air went completely still. For what felt like an eternity, neither of us spoke. I could hear my own heartbeat, could feel the warmth of his skin against mine, could see something vulnerable and uncertain flickering in his gray eyes. Finally, his voice came, quiet and serious."Yes."The simple word was more precious than any elaborate declaration could have been."It is a confession," he continued, his fingers tracing gentle patterns on my bare shoulder. "Though I have to admit, this isn't how I imagined telling you."I shifted slightly to look at him better, studying the unexpectedly shy expression on his face."I always thought a proper confession should happen somewhere... meaningful. Romantic. Not in a hospital bed after we just—" He paused, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. "This feels... cheap. Almost.""Cheap?" I repeated softly."Like I'm taking advantage of a moment when you're vulnerable. When we're both caught up in... physical intensity."His honesty was en

  • The Billionaire’s Regret After His Daughter Died   Is this a confession of love?

Elara's POVHis words made me laugh despite the heat coursing through my veins."And how are you going to stop me?" I teased, arching an eyebrow. "You're an invalid, remember?"The challenge in my voice seemed to amuse him. His eyes glittered with something dangerous and predatory."Is that what you think?" he murmured, and before I could react, his arms were around me, lifting me effortlessly onto the narrow hospital bed."Damien!" I gasped, immediately reaching for his injured arm. "Be careful! You'll hurt yourself!"But he caught my hands easily, his grip strong and steady."My right hand has been perfectly fine for days," he said, his voice low and amused. "I've been pretending it was still injured."I stared at him in shock. "You've been pretending?""I wanted to enjoy having you take care of me," he admitted, that devastating smile spreading across his face. "Sue me for wanting my wife's attention."Indignation flared through me, mixed with embarrassment at how easily I'd been fo
