LAURA

I blinked slowly as I took in the view through the floor-to-ceiling window of the living room.

It was early in the morning, the sun was just beginning to stretch across the sky, pale gold bleeding into blues. I wrapped my robe tighter around me and held onto the coffee I had made for myself.

This was the life, wasn’t it?

The views were breathtaking, the furniture was expensive, there was a chef to cook you anything you wanted. What’s there not to love?

Everything apparently.

I took a sip

LAURA The penthouse felt unevenly quiet the moment the door clicked shut behind Xavier. He had said he was going to Arrington's, a vague phrase that usually made business. I was supposed to ask about it, but tonight felt different. The air was charged like the static before a storm. I couldn't wait to imagine everything. His little niceness and emotions towards me, his change of character, and everything just made... tonight's different focus. “Laura, he will be back at seven,” I whispered to my reflection, though my nerves were doing a slow dance in my stomach. My solitude didn’t last long; Juniper burst in ten minutes later, trailing a rolling rack of silk and lace like she was prepping for fashion week.“We are not just going out, honey,” she declared, bypassing a greeting entirely. “We are making a statement.”“Yes, I know,” I replied. I actually told her everything she needed to know. I told her about my anticipation for good news and the fact that Xavier had actually told me t

XAVIER I slowly opened my eyes to see Laura curled up against my chest. Her hair splayed across my arms, her breath soft and even. I couldn't help but move closer to her as I caressed her cheek gently. This felt like heaven. I did not even need to be told before a smile crept on my face. So many things I could already imagine going through my head. And then I realized, for the first time in a week, I wasn't immediately rushing to reach for my phone to check threats or business updates. I just laid there watching her sleep and let myself feel the contentment that had been foreign to me for so long. This is what normal couples do—they wake up together, they plan dates, they build a life that isn't constantly defined by crisis. I wanted that for Laura; I wanted boring and domestic and safe, at least for a while. We needed it. I stared at her and was just amazed at how peaceful she was. She wasn't yelling at me or telling me to stop keeping secrets from her. Instead, she was cuddling

LAURA I thought I could be strong. But the moment I stepped into my room, slamming the door shut, I fell to the ground sobbing, holding tightly to my chest as I tried to fight back the tears. “No, no. I'm trying to act strong by distancing myself from Xavier, and it is not helping me one bit. I have to stop this. I have to stop deceiving myself.” I stood up and went straight to the shower, pouring cold, chilling water straight from my head down, making me feel at ease and at peace with myself. I smiled and wrapped myself in towels, stepping out to see Xavier already laying on the bed, shirtless, and like he was already fast asleep. I sneakily made my way to the closet and picked up a nightdress. I just needed to sleep and cool my head down. Maybe when I do, everything is going to be different, and there might be changes around me. I guess so. I couldn’t really make claims at the moment. With that, I laid comfortably, staring up at the ceiling. Only for me to feel his warm hands w

LAURA The floor was cold beneath my palms, a grounding chill that did not match the heat of the humiliation boiling in my throat. I watched a single tear hit the hardwood, a time-insulted evidence of the weakness Alex had bragged about on national television. Xavier's shadow fell over me, long and suffocating. I could feel him hovering, that restless energy of a man who wanted to fix a problem he had spent months creating. “Laura,” he breathed, his voice thick with that agonizing soft pity. “Please get up.” I didn't get up. I stayed there for a bit longer, listening to the hum of the Chicago wind against the glass. In that silence, something shifted. The surgical cord I had felt earlier wasn't a temporary max; it was melting. The girl who needed Xavier to check under the bed for monsters was being replaced by someone who realized the monster was currently standing in her living room holding a glass of water. I wiped my face with the back of my hand. A shower. Sharp, jagged motion

LAURA Okay, the silence that followed the click of the disconnected call was more violent than the threats themselves. I could feel Juniper's eyes on me, a mixture of pity and terror, but for the first time in months, I did not feel like crying. I felt cold—the kind of surgical cold that takes over when you are looking at a patient bleeding out on the table. I realized that if you don't stop the hemorrhage right now, there won't be a body left to save. “Laura, speak to me. What did she say?” Juniper gripped my shoulder, trying to ground me. “She wants a trade,” I said, my voice sounding flat even to my own ears. I looked down at the phone in my hand, the device that has been a portal to my own destruction all morning. My silence for Juniper's freedom, my reputation for Xavier's empire. “She’s bluffing,” Juniper hissed. “She’s a desperate woman clinging to a sinking ship.” “No,” I replied, finally meeting Juniper's gaze. My eyes were clear. “She’s not bluffing. Esther doesn’t

LAURA "That's the thing you don't know about this life. Everyone is ready to do everything and anything to get what they want. And if manipulating and turning the story around is the only way for him to do it, believe me, he will do it tenfold. I don't know why this is still surprising you. You are supposed to be expecting the negativity. All you have to do is pretend like you don't see it and try to cope with it. That is what matters at this point," she said as I tried calming my nerves down, just as she suggested. But I couldn't fight it. At least one thing I could assure Juniper of was the fact that I would stay away from the media. But I couldn't keep my mouth shut. I couldn't stop worrying and thinking about everyone's negativity towards me. Suddenly, I don’t know. "Why are they suddenly acting like this? Why are they making a big thing out of it? This is not what I wanted. Can't you even see it? This is just the evening of the out, and major outlets are already running differe

XAVIER “Boss, boss, boss!” I could hear Marcus’s voice through my haze of sleep and I was already annoyed. I forced my eyes open, the bright lights of the infirmary stabbing into my skull. My head was still pounding, my body felt like it had been run over by a truck, and the last thing I needed w
