XAVIER

“Right this way sir,” the chauffeur gestured to the elevator and I gave him a slight nod before entering.

When the metal doors shifted to a close, I released a breath I hadn’t even realized I was holding.

Tonight, I was meeting with the heads of the other families in Chicago at the China twin towers, one of the tallest and most exclusive in the city.

Despite the cold and calculating mask I put on, I couldn’t help but feel nervous. It was the first meeting since Mother’s funeral and I didn’t know what to expect.

Everyone would be watching me, evaluating whether I was as strong as my father was, whether my mother’s influence had softened me.

The elevator came to a stop on the fifth floor. I cleared my throat and adjusted my suit before stepping out.

“Get a hang of yourself, Blackwell.”

This wasn’t the time or day to hesitate. These men were vultures, some even my father shuddered at. And since he passed they thought his organization was done for.

That they could devour it along

LAURAThe sun was setting and I was still cuddled up in the lounge chair, watching a bad rom-com I’d seen online. This was my new haven since Xavier had rendered me jobless. I had nothing else to do. I was given a brand new phone because apparently “his team” were taking longer than expected. It was one of the newest models, flashy, efficient but empty. I still had my contacts and pictures but it somewhat felt different.I thought I’d like it at first, lounging around and not necessarily having to do anything. But I had to admit that it was rather lonely.Xavier was out most of the time on his endless meetings. Juniper and Lucas didn’t exactly live here and though me and Juniper had made a little progress, we weren’t necessarily friends. It felt like I was going crazy and I missed my patients even more. I missed having something to do.Xavier had also taken over the whole deal with my biological parents into his hands. Talk about rendering me into a house plant. But still, it was f

LAURAI blinked slowly as I took in the view through the floor-to-ceiling window of the living room.It was early in the morning, the sun was just beginning to stretch across the sky, pale gold bleeding into blues. I wrapped my robe tighter around me and held onto the coffee I had made for myself. This was the life, wasn’t it?The views were breathtaking, the furniture was expensive, there was a chef to cook you anything you wanted. What’s there not to love?Everything apparently.I took a sip of my coffee and felt the bitterness match my mood. Because despite all this luxury, despite the million-dollar view and the designer everything, I felt like a total prisoner.I couldn’t leave without security trailing behind me. I had nowhere to go anyway. My apartment was still a crime scene, yellow tape probably still stretched across the doorway, and most of my belongings were destroyed or contaminated. Everything I’d built for myself these past years, gone.I set my coffee down on the mar

XavierThe conference room was on the thirty-second floor of the Blackwell Tower.I sat at the head of the table, fingers drumming against the polished table as my mother’s—no, my legal team shuffled through mountains of paperwork.“Mr. Blackwell, if you’ll just sign here,” Gerald Hutchins, the lead attorney, slid another document across the table. His thick round glasses caught the morning light as he gestured to the signature. “This officially transfers Grace Blackwell’s logistics company into your name, effective immediately.”I picked up my pen, feeling the weight of it between my fingers. This was it. The moment I’d been working toward for years. Every compromise, every calculated move, every sleepless night had led to up to this exact moment. My phone buzzed in my pocket.I ignored it and scrawled my signature across the line, the ink flowing thick and smooth. “And here,” Hutchins continued, sliding over another document. “This one finalizes the board transition. You’ll have

LAURAI slammed my door and jumped into bed, taking hold of a pillow and screaming into it at the very top of my lungs.Just who the hell did he think he was?!Ugh.I was so mad that I wanted to tear the room apart or scream or go to his stupid face and give him a piece of my mind.I really thought I was fine with it. With not knowing if Richard had really just committed suicide or if Xavier was actually behind it.I had already decided not to care and to just make the best of this two year fake relationship but curiosity got the best of me. I wanted to know.Especially after how that kiss made me feel. I thought that maybe, maybe my impression of him was wrong and unfair and he deserved an opportunity to defend himself. Maybe he wasn’t a killer after all and was simply a complicated person. But I was wrong. He was cold and cruel, and obviously heartless—because how could he say such a thing? What the hell did he mean by showing mercy was just a sign of weakness? He had no regard for

XAVIER“Where did Laura go?” I asked when I was done with my call. Juniper rolled her eyes and Lucas pointed towards the bathroom.“She didn’t seem okay, you might want to go check up on her.”I sighed, following his directions to the closest bathroom down the hallway. “Hey Laura, you in there? Lucas tells me that you’re not okay, what’s wrong?” I knocked and some seconds later, the door came creeping open. My eyes fell over Laura’s small figure, she was practically shaking all over, her face as white as a ghost. She looked…mortified.“What’s wrong?” I asked, panic lacing in my voice. My eyebrows creased as I watched Laura try to form a sentence but failed. She only lifted up her phone and showed me a text message.“What is this?”“I don’t know,” she managed, her voice breaking as tears began to trail down her eyes. I read the text message again and I still didn’t get what was wrong with her. “Is someone wishing you a happy married life on your mother’s behalf that emotional?”La
