MasukBriar’s POV
“Why can’t I visit?” Mum yelled from the other end of the phone. I held the phone away from my ear, cursing inwardly. “Mum, please. I am stressed.” “That is not the response I seek.” She snapped. Inhaling sharply, I rubbed at my growing belly gently with my free hand. It’s been over two weeks since Isadora’s arrival and my life has taken a different turn. It took me back to the days when I lived with my mother and had to stay locked up in my room whenever she brought her numerous guests over. He says she would only be here until her apartment is ready. But it is beginning to seem like a shallow excuse to me. In just a short while, I have seen a different side of Adrian. He laughs freely with Isadora and whenever I see him, she is always on his arm. They eat together, spend long hours talking about God knows what in his room or study. I don’t think I have ever felt this much loneliness before. Whenever I try to talk to Adrian, it's always brief with no emotion. He seems impatient to talk to me. I have tried to keep my mother away, knowing that if she shows up, all hell might let loose. I already have too much on my plate as it is. “Did Adrian ask that I shouldn’t visit you two?” She inquired. Jolting me back to the present. “Yes, mum. Just for the meantime.” I lied, not bothering to give any explanation further. Mum fears Adrian, she never wants to do anything to get on his bad side. I guess that is what happens when one's daily bread comes from someone like him. There was a bit of a pause on the other end. “Well, let’s hope it won’t take too long. Can you send me five thousand dollars? I need to do some quick grocery shopping.” “With five thousand? What sort of groceries are you buying?” I questioned. “Don’t ask me what I do with money. Just send it.” “I thought Adrian already gave you your monthly allowance.” “Am I not allowed to spend money now? Are you being this rude because you are the one with the billionaire husband?” She began her manipulative streak. I inhaled slowly. “I don’t have that much to send you. A thousand is what I can spare.” “You are so miserly.” “You want it or not?” “Send it and it better not take long.” She hissed, ending the call. I dropped the phone on the kitchen island, taking in a deep breath. I can feel a headache brewing. The doctor had warned me on my last visit to the hospital that I should try not to be stressed for the sake of my baby. And it felt like following the warning would be one of the hardest things for me to do. Everywhere I look there is something to make my heart race and not for a joyous reason. My mother is always bugging me for money and my husband doesn’t care about his breeding vessel. We never discussed his ridiculing description of me. But every day I remember and it crippled me. Tears formed in my eyes, and I had to blink them back. Crying will make me appear weak. And I am not. I reached for my phone again and sent the money to mum before she started blowing up my phone. Went ahead to dip the phone in my pocket and get cooking. Gibson is off today and I thought it might be nice to make something tasty for dinner. A part of me hoped Adrian might show interest. “What are you doing?” The voice I dread lately inquired. I didn’t bother to raise my head. “I am preparing dinner as you can see,” I replied, cutting the veggies with more intensity. Isadora cackled coldly. “Don’t tell me you are planning to feed Adrian whatever you cook up?” She eventually got me to raise my head. I exhaled, staring at her. She always does this, rage-baiting me with dumb questions and snide remarks. “Why not? I am his wife after all. Feeding him is part of my duty.” I said. She snorted, flipping her straight hair. “You are so pathetic. I am certain he has told you countless times that he doesn’t want anything from you. But it seems your hope keeps mounting each passing day.” Shutting my eyes for a split second, I decided she wasn’t worth the response and continued with what I was doing. That didn’t sit right with her. The next thing she did was pull my cutting board roughly, scattering the veggies around the kitchen island. “What the hell?” I blurted. Isadora’s eyes were like a piercing arrow as she glared at me. “You will respond to me when I speak to you. Better not think for a moment that Adrian will ever want you. I said it before, I am his first love and will forever be the woman he wants. For you; you are just a placeholder.” I couldn’t resist the laughter that rumbled in my throat. “A placeholder? I am legally married to him. If you were the true love of his life, why aren’t you wearing his ring?” Her cheek twitched as her expression darkened. “You stupid girl! You have grown a lot of wings. Do you think I don’t know that your mother practically sold you out to Adrian? Everyone knows how much debt he had to pay to have you be his surrogate. The only difference is that you have a married title. Nothing more. You will never mean anything to him. Not now, not ever.” I grabbed my dress, clenching my fist. Tears pricked the back of my eyes painfully as I pressed my lips together to avoid bursting into tears. It took me a few seconds to get myself together. Squaring my shoulder, I held her gaze intently. “You are the storyteller, keep narrating. It still won’t change the fact that I am Mrs. Sterling here. Not you.” I affirmed, turning to leave. “How dare you talk to me like that, bitch!” She pulled me back, but I was quick to yank my arm out of her grip causing her to fall. And she let out a scream in effect. As if he had been around the whole time, Adrian showed up in the kitchen pushing past me to lift Isadora off the floor. My back hit the kitchen island edge and I winced in pain. “Isa, are you okay? What happened here?” Adrian asked, his face filled with concern and he didn’t even bat an eyelash at me despite the push. Isadora with a sneaky look in her eyes pointed at me while sobbing. “She pushed me. Just because I wanted to help prepare dinner. She insulted me and shoved me to the ground.” “You did that?” Adrian growled at me, helping her up. “I didn’t….” I tried to speak but he stopped me. “Don’t you say a word! I should have known you would act out someday. She is a guest. Do you not know what that means? You could have hurt her.” He fumed. “I am hurt,” Isadora whined, clinging to him. Adrian patted her hair gently then turned a fierce gaze at me. “Let this be the last time this happens. You don’t want to know what I might do if you do this nonsense again!” He snarled, lifting Isadora in a bridal style out of the kitchen while my back gave out.Adrian’s POVMy head aches like it might split in two for relief's sake. This is why I hate drinking irresponsibly. I have never been able to handle myself when I get drunk. There is a limit to what I can consume. But I wanted to go numb so bad, it just felt like the right decision. Sitting up on the bed, I fluttered my lashes a couple of times to know where I am. The room looked like a hotel room. I don’t remember lodging in last night. Groaning, I grabbed a fistful of my hair and sat on the edge of the bed. Rubbing at my tired face, I let out a shocked sigh when I placed my feet on the cold floor and the memories of last night flooded my head. I wanted to slap my forehead to rebuke myself for acting out. But I couldn’t do so to avoid worsening the headache. I wonder what Briar thinks of me now. The reckless outburst and vomit must have thrown her off. I had blanked out afterwards which must be why I don’t remember being brought to the hotel. That must have been a lot for Briar to h
Briar’s POVI leaped back at the pour of puke, too stunned to scream as I flared my nose in irritation. Adrian staggered for a few seconds, wincing probably at the stale taste of his puke. He rubbed his face a couple of times and tried to remain steady. Then he suddenly held my gaze. “Briar…..” Adrian let out in a soft tone before falling against me. Thankfully I caught his shoulder with both hands preventing us from falling into his vomit. He reeked of it too. I didn’t think he was the type to get this drunk. He is such a lightweight. A string of curses escaped my lips. If anyone had told me that I was going to handle this sort of mess when all I wanted was a glass of wine away from home, I would have just stayed back and locked myself up in my room. I looked around for anyone to help me with him but there wasn’t anyone nearby. I had to shake him awake. “Adrian, where is your car?” I inquired. He threw his arm out lazily, his words almost inaudible. “There.” Huffing in frustra
Adrian’s POVAfter driving aimlessly for hours, I eventually ended up at a bar. It was the only thing I could do before I ended up going to Briar’s house to embarrass myself. “What would you like to have sir?” The bartender asked. “Gin and tonic. Keep the gin heavy.” I replied. “You got it.” My drink was ready in no time. To shut off my distorted feeling, I downed the glass in one go and asked for another. It sizzled down my throat and seemed to do a good job at dissolving the tension I felt. “Hello, pretty lady. What do you want me to get you?” The bartender inquired in a friendly tone. “Red wine please.” The customer replied. Even in my daze, there is no way I wouldn’t know whose voice that is. I turned my head and it was really her. I chugged down half of my drink, swallowing with difficulty. It is my fourth glass. “What are the odds? Did you fight with hubby?” I couldn’t resist the spite in my voice. “Adrian?” Briar called out—a flash of shock on her face before it return
Adrian’s POV“This is unbelievable!” Isadora blurted dramatically when we got into the car. “It's always the innocent-looking ones. Who would have thought Briar had such a vile attitude? A child as grown as that with her team leader? I am stunned.” She cackled, covering up her face. My grip tightened around the steering wheel as I focused on the road.“Why aren’t you saying anything, Adrian?” she asked, pausing. “Wait a minute…you knew about it? How?” “What do you think about the exhibition ground for the aquarium?” I asked, shifting the topic to the exact reason why we were at the aquarium earlier. Isadora sucked her teeth, folding her arms. “Well, this is not an official work day so I am not obliged to answer that question. What I need to know is why you said nothing about Briar getting involved with another man. Shouldn’t you sue her, really? She made a fool of you and pretended to be dead. Are we just going to turn a blind eye to it?”I took in a sharp breath, clenching my jaw
Briar’s POV“Mummy, see that octopus!” Knox squealed in excitement, pressing his finger against the tunnel tank that harbored the sea folks. I gasped at the enormous sight of the octopus. Many of the animals were big and weird. The sharks and sea turtles had me staring in disbelief. I have never been to an aquarium. This is the first time for me and me. When we walked in, I saw many parents with their young children, all excited and running around. I felt guilty for not taking Knox to a space like this earlier. But he made me realize it was in fact a good decision to have waited until this moment. He was practically going mad. Making Liam chase him. None of our warnings was heard. It appears the space makes children act out due to excitement. I would have screamed in frustration if it were just the two of us and I had to run after him every time he saw something mindblowing. I might sound like a terrible mother, but I genuinely do not like to lie to myself. Liam picked him off the f
Briar’s POV“Was it just me or did Isadora seem to be trying to put down your work?” Liam noted, taking a long sip of his water.I tapped my finger gently on the table, the food in my mouth going watery as I had been chewing for a long time. “I am more surprised that Adrian didn’t seem put off and has signed off on the project,” I admitted. As always Isadora couldn’t hide her claws. For every meeting we had regarding project approval, she shut down my opinions and listened to others while ignoring the actual brains behind the task. Since I knew she was doing it out of spite, I didn’t let myself be bothered. Aside from Liam, Adrian was always waving her off, which is quite bothersome. Rissa smacked her lips. “Is he supposed to have a problem with it? You did a good job. It is only right that you get commended for it.”“You don’t know him as I do.” I sniffed, sitting up. “he doesn’t act without a reason. I have a feeling that this might not turn out well.” “You have been hammering on
Briar’s POVI let out a frustrated groan, kicking my feet against the floor. What have I done? I should have controlled my anger. I just let it get the best of me and now I have to learn the hard way. I grabbed my hair tightly, wishing I could pull it out. “Will you stop that already!” Rissa rebuk
Adrian’s POV“Is she okay?” I asked the doctor. “Yes, she is fine. She passed out due to shock. Once she is well rested she will be alright. You can take her home soon after getting her prescriptions.” He replied. “Thank you.” I let out a long sigh when he left, staring at Isadora who was still s
Briar’s POV“Briar….” Adrian whispered, staggering backwards a little with a flash of hurt in his eyes. I kissed my teeth, combing my hair with my fingers as I turned around a bit before looking back at him. His face seemed to have lost a bit of its color. His pretense only made me disgusted. “Cu
Briar’s POVI tapped my feet anxiously, trying hard not to chew on my nails and embarrass myself. I think I might be losing my mind. Everyone in the office is busy with one thing or another and I am just left to scribble in my work note while waiting for Adrian to give feedback on the design propos
