Chapter 3

Auteur: Oatmeal
But everyone rushed to comfort Susie instead.

My mother promised to take her out the next day to buy the newest silk shawl. My father called me cruel and spoiled, while Damon promised to have ten servants help with her packing.

No one cared that I was still lying on the floor, unable to get up.

I dragged myself upright and slowly made my way back to my room.

The manor was huge, yet my room had always been the tiny attic.

Susie had an entire floor to herself, and so did Damon.

The attic was poorly ventilated and infested with rats year-round.

Its only window was a small skylight that let me glimpse the moon at night.

My father always said there was no point in making a bedroom luxurious. Susie, however, was different. She would help manage the pack one day.

According to him, poor living conditions might interfere with her wolf's awakening.

Yet I'd spent eighteen years living in that attic.

He knew exactly what it was like up there.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

Luna Maeve messaged me again.

"I'll send someone to meet you at the border. You're more than welcome here. With a record like yours, I promise we won't disappoint you.

"Just let me know when you'll be arriving."

I stared at the screen.

Curled up on my narrow bed without a blanket, I couldn't stop shivering.

I replied, "The day after tomorrow."

Just two more days, and I would finally be free of this place.

The next morning, I noticed that the bow mounted on my wall was missing. It had been handcrafted by the pack's finest bowmaker.

There wasn't another one like it in the entire pack. I'd won it from the elder during the spring hunt.

Ignoring the pain in my knees, I hurried downstairs to find out who had taken it.

There was Susie, happily admiring my bow.

"If I use this at my coming-of-age hunt, everyone will be so jealous," she gushed.

"That's mine," I said.

My mother's expression immediately soured. "Just let your sister borrow it."

"I won that bow at the spring hunt!"

It wasn't just a prize. It was the only thing in that house I could truly call mine.

"What do you mean? Everything under this roof belongs to this family."

My mother's face darkened. "If we hadn't raised you and sent you to the academy, would you even have had the skills to win it?

"Your sister's ceremony is only a few days away. What's wrong with letting her have it as a gift? Why are you so selfish?!"

Susie spoke in a hurt voice. "If you don't want me to have it, fine. I'll just hunt without it.

"I'll embarrass Mom and Dad in front of everyone, but I guess that doesn't matter."

Her eyes filled with tears again.

My father came in just as she started crying. "What is all this noise about?!"

One look at Susie holding the bow was enough for him to decide I was at fault.

"It's just a bow. Do you really have to make your sister cry over it?"

I ignored him and reached for the bow.

"It's mine! I won't let her have it!"

I wasn't about to let Susie take away the one thing I'd earned entirely on my own.

During the spring hunt, I'd pushed through the rainforest with branches cutting into my face and had nearly broken my leg in a fall, all to win that bow.

I'd earned every bit of it.

And not one person in my family had celebrated with me.

They'd been too busy planning Susie's next vacation.

When I refused to give in, Susie claimed she would return the bow, yet she still wouldn't let go of it.

I grabbed hold of it, but pain immediately shot through my injured hand. Fresh blood began seeping through the gauze.

I instinctively let go. Susie stumbled backward and fell.

She immediately burst into tears.

"I know you didn't want me touching it, but you didn't have to shove me! I was going to give it back. Why would you do that?"

I stood frozen. I hadn't touched her.

My father charged over. "I don't care how angry you are. You don't get to hurt your sister!"

My mother rushed to Susie's side. "Are you hurt? Does it hurt anywhere?"

After making sure Susie was all right, my mother stormed over and slapped me across the face. "Even if you wanted the bow back, you had no right to shove her!"

My fingers were still bleeding.

Between the throbbing pain in my hand and the force of the slap, I could barely think straight.

"I didn't push her," I said, my voice shaking.

"And now you're lying about it? I saw what you did!"

My mother helped Susie into a chair.

My father shook his head in disgust. "We raised you, and this is how you turned out? How can you be so selfish?"

I was too angry to speak. And through it all, Susie was still clutching my bow.

"Give me back what's mine."

I laughed coldly. It wasn't that I'd never liked dressing up. No one had ever given me the chance to.My parents had simply decided I wasn't interested without ever bothering to ask. They had never paid enough attention to know what I liked."I don't need it."My mother looked up in surprise. "Why not? Think of it as our way of making it up to you.""I don't need you to make anything up to me. I already have more than enough jewelry. And one more thing. Don't come looking for me again."I was ready to leave, but my mother reached out and grabbed my hand."Serena, are you still angry?"Her eyes were red and glistening with tears, something I'd never seen before."We're family, no matter what. Even if we were wrong back then, even if we neglected you, you can't just cut us out of your life forever."Besides, Susie has been getting worse ever since her awakening failed two years ago. Can't you forgive her and let the past go?"I pulled my hand free. "I'm not angry with anyone. I've just r

Susie was crying on the other end.Her voice trembled. "When are you coming home? I failed my awakening. I can't even bring myself to go back to the academy. I don't have any friends left. Everyone looks down on me.""Not my problem." My voice remained cold."You never treated me like this. You always looked out for me."She was right about that. Whenever someone picked on Susie, I'd always been the first to stand up for her.Once, she and a friend got into an argument over a training ground. As soon as I heard about it, I rushed over to defend her.Her friend attacked me with her claws.I fought back and pushed her to the ground. But instead of defending me, Susie sided with her friend and accused me of being unreasonable. That was when I stopped fighting her battles for her. And now she was calling me because she had no one else to turn to.She continued sobbing. "Come home, please? Mom and Dad worry about you every day. They've barely been sleeping."I didn't believe a word of it.I

My father was furious, but there was nothing he could do.Susie, still struggling to come to terms with her failed awakening, immediately sank back into self-pity. "I failed my awakening, and she gets to run off and be happy with someone else."Why is my life so miserable while everything seems to work out for her?"She burst into tears. My mother pulled her into her arms, her heart aching as her resentment toward me grew. "We have to find her. How could she do something like this!"They went up to my room to look for anything that might tell them where I'd gone. The attic was tiny, with barely enough room for a bed and a few large wooden chests. It didn't even have a desk.I'd spent years doing my schoolwork hunched over those chests. My mother opened one of them. Inside were a few faded, worn-out clothes that Susie had outgrown.I'd spent the past two years wearing those clothes, even though none of them fit properly."Where did these clothes come from?" my mother asked, unable to re

I stayed on the line.My father snatched the phone and demanded, "Who gave you permission to run off up north?!"We told you, the avalanche blocked the roads. We couldn't get to you! And now you're throwing a tantrum over it?"I said nothing, but my silence said everything. My mother took the phone from him. "Come home right now, and we won't blame you. Just apologize to Susie and make her feel better."I couldn't help but laugh bitterly. So they knew Susie's failed awakening wasn't really my fault. They knew it, yet they blamed me anyway. My laughter only made my father angrier."Book a ticket home right now! I'll meet you at the border!"Funny. Now that they wanted me back, they were suddenly willing to come all the way to the border for me. But it was too late. I didn't feel a thing."I'm not coming back." My voice remained calm."If you don't come back, what about Susie? She's locked herself in her room and won't come out!" my mother shouted in the background.I glanced around my n

The next day, I reached the Northern Pack.As soon as I crossed into their territory, I cut off the mind-link with my family.Luna Maeve came to meet me in person. Her eyes immediately fell on my bandaged fingers. "Your hand...""I'm fine."I smiled at her, and she didn't ask any more questions.Instead, she motioned for someone to take my luggage."You're hurt. Don't carry anything heavy," she said softly.I stared at her, caught off guard. For the first time, I realized that someone could hear me say I was fine and still care enough to worry. She gave me the finest guest room in her manor. It was bright and spacious, with silk bedding and fresh air flowing through the room.In all my twenty years at home, I'd never had a room this nice. Only Susie had.For a long moment, I simply stood there and took it all in.That evening, Maeve asked her personal healer to examine my frostbitten fingers. When the bandages came off, we found that the wounds had become infected. The healer frowned.

There was no point explaining myself anymore. All I wanted was my bow back. They would always believe Susie over me. Her feelings came first, her wishes came first, and I had never truly mattered to any of them.Damon came downstairs, took one look at the scene, and immediately assumed I was the one causing trouble."What are you fighting with your sister over this time?" he asked coldly."You're lucky we even let you live in this house."Then he turned his attention to Susie. I ignored him and reached for my bow again. My mother jumped to her feet and shoved me back. "Haven't you caused enough trouble?!"If I'd known you'd grow up to be this selfish, I never would have raised you!"You're making so much trouble over one little thing!"Even the clothes on your back came from your sister. Didn't we tell you? Once she's done with something, you can have it."Her words hit me harder than I expected.I froze, a lump forming in my throat. Even Susie's unwanted hand-me-downs were something t
