LOGINThe day a blizzard sealed the mountain roads, the entire pack lost power. My academy and my sister's were on opposite sides of the pack's territory. My father, Alpha Gerald Vale, set out with his warriors. My mother, Moira Vale, called me. "We're going to get your sister first. She hasn't awakened her wolf yet, so she won't survive this storm. Stay at the academy gate and wait for us." I stood outside in the freezing wind, waiting until nightfall. The school sirens eventually began to wail. Snow rose past my knees, and then an avalanche thundered down the mountain. Only then did my mother finally call. "The avalanche blocked the roads. Find your own way home." I clutched my coat tight and trudged through the blizzard for five hours. The avalanche buried me beneath the snow. My fingers were numb with cold, and I felt like the blood in my veins had turned to ice. When I finally crawled home, the manor lights glowed, warm and peaceful. My mother slid the last bowl of meat stew toward my younger sister, Susie Vale. My brother, Damon Vale, took one look at me, covered in snow, and snapped, "Why didn't you shake it off before coming in? You've ruined Susie's favorite rug." I stood in the doorway, saying nothing. Susie smiled and grumbled playfully, "I thought you'd found something good to eat out there and forgotten all about coming home." Outside, the blizzard had brought down whole slopes. Several rogues had frozen to death in it. And somehow, that was still what they believed. Not one of them seemed surprised that I'd made it back alive. Suddenly, none of it seemed to matter anymore. I finally realized it wasn't the blizzard keeping me from home. It was them.
View MoreI laughed coldly. It wasn't that I'd never liked dressing up. No one had ever given me the chance to.My parents had simply decided I wasn't interested without ever bothering to ask. They had never paid enough attention to know what I liked."I don't need it."My mother looked up in surprise. "Why not? Think of it as our way of making it up to you.""I don't need you to make anything up to me. I already have more than enough jewelry. And one more thing. Don't come looking for me again."I was ready to leave, but my mother reached out and grabbed my hand."Serena, are you still angry?"Her eyes were red and glistening with tears, something I'd never seen before."We're family, no matter what. Even if we were wrong back then, even if we neglected you, you can't just cut us out of your life forever."Besides, Susie has been getting worse ever since her awakening failed two years ago. Can't you forgive her and let the past go?"I pulled my hand free. "I'm not angry with anyone. I've just r
Susie was crying on the other end.Her voice trembled. "When are you coming home? I failed my awakening. I can't even bring myself to go back to the academy. I don't have any friends left. Everyone looks down on me.""Not my problem." My voice remained cold."You never treated me like this. You always looked out for me."She was right about that. Whenever someone picked on Susie, I'd always been the first to stand up for her.Once, she and a friend got into an argument over a training ground. As soon as I heard about it, I rushed over to defend her.Her friend attacked me with her claws.I fought back and pushed her to the ground. But instead of defending me, Susie sided with her friend and accused me of being unreasonable. That was when I stopped fighting her battles for her. And now she was calling me because she had no one else to turn to.She continued sobbing. "Come home, please? Mom and Dad worry about you every day. They've barely been sleeping."I didn't believe a word of it.I
My father was furious, but there was nothing he could do.Susie, still struggling to come to terms with her failed awakening, immediately sank back into self-pity. "I failed my awakening, and she gets to run off and be happy with someone else."Why is my life so miserable while everything seems to work out for her?"She burst into tears. My mother pulled her into her arms, her heart aching as her resentment toward me grew. "We have to find her. How could she do something like this!"They went up to my room to look for anything that might tell them where I'd gone. The attic was tiny, with barely enough room for a bed and a few large wooden chests. It didn't even have a desk.I'd spent years doing my schoolwork hunched over those chests. My mother opened one of them. Inside were a few faded, worn-out clothes that Susie had outgrown.I'd spent the past two years wearing those clothes, even though none of them fit properly."Where did these clothes come from?" my mother asked, unable to re
I stayed on the line.My father snatched the phone and demanded, "Who gave you permission to run off up north?!"We told you, the avalanche blocked the roads. We couldn't get to you! And now you're throwing a tantrum over it?"I said nothing, but my silence said everything. My mother took the phone from him. "Come home right now, and we won't blame you. Just apologize to Susie and make her feel better."I couldn't help but laugh bitterly. So they knew Susie's failed awakening wasn't really my fault. They knew it, yet they blamed me anyway. My laughter only made my father angrier."Book a ticket home right now! I'll meet you at the border!"Funny. Now that they wanted me back, they were suddenly willing to come all the way to the border for me. But it was too late. I didn't feel a thing."I'm not coming back." My voice remained calm."If you don't come back, what about Susie? She's locked herself in her room and won't come out!" my mother shouted in the background.I glanced around my n
