Chapter 4

Author: Seven Seas
Someone was pounding violently against my hotel room door.

Before I could even get up, the door was kicked open.

Caelan stood in the doorway, the cold night air still clinging to his black coat.

“Claire Hartwell.” He walked toward me slowly, his voice low and dangerous.

“How far exactly were you planning to run from me?”

I instinctively stepped backward until my lower back hit the window ledge. There was nowhere left to retreat.

His gaze swept across my neck, and I saw his throat move slightly.

My chest tightened painfully. “Did you come here just because you wanted blood?”

Caelan stared at me for a long moment before finally speaking.

“You think I stayed with you for five years just to drink your blood?”

I turned my face away. “If you want it, then take it.”

His cold breath brushed against my neck. His fangs grazed lightly over my skin.

My body trembled instinctively.

But instead of biting me, he stopped.

He only reached out and pulled me into his arms. “Come with me.”

The abandoned observatory at the top of the mountain.

Five years ago, this was the first place he ever brought me.

Back then, I had just been taken into the castle. I was terrified every night and could barely sleep.

Then one night, Caelan suddenly brought me here.

The enormous dome slowly opened above us, revealing a sky overflowing with stars.

Caelan stood behind me and said quietly, “Don’t humans like looking at the stars?”

Because of that single sentence, I willingly became his blood source for five entire years.

The wild night wind swept through the observatory as he wrapped his arms around me from behind.

For one brief moment, I almost wanted to pretend that nothing had happened.

My fingers clenched tightly at my sides.

“About Isolde’s child… Claire, listen to me…”

His phone rang.

“Your Highness! Miss Isolde suddenly started bleeding. Everyone is waiting for you.”

Caelan fell silent for a second before releasing me. “Wait for me here.”

Then he turned away.

I stood there motionless, watching his figure disappear farther and farther into the darkness.

Suddenly my stomach twisted violently.

My vision blurred black around the edges as I grabbed onto the railing for support, but I still slowly collapsed to my knees.

The freezing night wind rushed painfully into my lungs.

And the last thing I saw was the endless star-filled sky slowly turning above my head.

When I woke again, the air was thick with the sharp scent of disinfectant.

I stared blankly at the pale white hospital lights above me while hushed voices drifted into my ears.

“She’s been losing blood regularly for years. Now she’s severely anemic. If this continues…”

“Anemic?” Caelan’s voice cut through the room sharply. “I didn’t bite her.”

The doctor hesitated. “That’s because she…”

My heart clenched violently. I forced myself upright.

“Doctor,” I interrupted quickly, “I’ve just been overworking lately.”

Caelan’s gaze snapped back to my face.

“Claire, what exactly are you hiding from me?”

His brows were tightly drawn as he grabbed my wrist hard enough to hurt.

The hospital room door suddenly opened.

“Caelan…” Isolde stood there, pale and fragile.

“You never came back. I got scared.”

I watched the emotion in Caelan’s eyes soften instantly.

He stood up at once and released my hand to go to her.

“What’s wrong? Are you still bleeding? Where’s the family doctor? Why is no one with you?”

The questions came one after another without pause.

And I lay there silently on the hospital bed, watching everything unfold.

So Caelan really could panic over someone. It just had never been me.

“Arrange a VIP suite for Isolde,” Caelan ordered coldly.

“And if anyone complains, silence them.”

“Also, bring in the best obstetric specialists available.”

The nurses quickly gathered around them as they escorted Isolde out of the room.

“The Prince treats his fiancée so well…”

“That’s a pureblood heir. If anything happened, the entire vampire world would lose its mind.”

Beneath the blanket, my hand slowly rested over my stomach.

Her child was the pureblood heir the entire vampire world had been waiting for.

Mine was only a half-blood that should never have existed.

From the very beginning, they belonged to two completely different worlds.

The hospital room fell silent again.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the blood bond document.

The once vivid crimson words had finally faded away completely.

I stared at the blank page for a very long time before slowly tearing it apart.

Outside the window, dawn was beginning to break.

My phone vibrated.

The boarding reminder for my Rio flight lit up the screen.

I stared at it for a long time without moving.

Five years.

The first moment I saw him… the first time he bit into my wrist… the night he told me that if I ever got pregnant, the child would be his only heir… the way he held me beneath the observatory stars…

It was all over now.

“Goodbye, Caelan Vale.”

I returned to Vale Castle.Along the corridor, servants lowered their heads one after another.“My Lady.”“My Lady.”“My Lady.”The greeting spread down the hallway.Five years ago, when I first walked these corridors, they called me something else.Human. Blood source. The human who followed the Prince. Now the entire castle knew I was carrying the Prince’s only child. The irony wasn’t lost on me.Caelan stood at the far end of the hall.“This child is the only heir of the Vale family,” he said.“Pureblood or half-blood makes no difference.”I looked at him. Strangely calm. That was because this was his child. But what if it wasn’t?If I weren’t pregnant, would he have come to Rio?Would he have canceled the engagement ceremony?Would he have slept on the floor?Would he have learned how to apologize for the first time in his life?I didn’t know. And I wasn’t brave enough to gamble again. That night, I felt better. The ancient bloodline power flowing beneath the castle steadied the ch

The sun was beginning to set.Caelan stood in the hallway, watching me.“Claire.” He hesitated.“Do you really think you were nothing more than a blood source to me?”I lowered my head and organized the papers in my bag.“It doesn’t matter anymore.”“It matters to me.”I didn’t answer. I turned and walked upstairs.Because now, no matter what the answer was, it couldn’t change those five years. That evening, the doorbell rang.I opened the door.Caelan stood outside holding a suitcase.“Claire. Can I stay here?”“No.”I started to close the door.A hand blocked it.Then my landlords suddenly appeared behind me.“Claire.” My landlady looked completely serious. “Half-blood pregnancies are already unstable.”“It’s better if the father stays nearby.”I looked at them. “He’s a vampire prince. Not an obstetrician.”My landlord nodded solemnly.“He can still be a driver. You should think about the baby.”The first night, he slept in the living room.Around midnight, I got up to get some water

Early morning.Outside my apartment building. The same black car had been parked there for three days.I stepped out of the building. The window rolled down.“Get in.”“No.”“The medical school is forty minutes away.”“I know.”“It’s going to rain.”“I brought an umbrella.”Silence. He looked at me. Then got out of the car and pulled open the passenger door.“Claire. Get in.”“No.”The next second, he picked me up.“Caelan!”“You’re going to be late.”“Put me down!”“No.”The door slammed shut. The electronic lock clicked into place.I slapped the window in frustration.“Open the door!”Caelan started the engine, completely calm.“Rio isn’t safe.”“A pregnant woman shouldn’t be taking taxis alone.”“That’s none of your business!”Caelan stared at me.For a second, it looked like he wanted to snap back. Then he swallowed it.“You never used to refuse me.”“That was before.”Ten minutes later.“Pull over.”He hit the brakes immediately. “What happened?”I pressed a hand against my stoma

“What did you just say?” Caelan looked up sharply.Isolde sat across from him, visibly nervous. She didn’t dare speak.Caelan stared at her. “Why did Claire think your child was mine?”The air froze. Isolde picked at the edge of her sleeve. After a long silence, she finally gathered the courage to answer.“Caelan, everyone thought that.”“Stop avoiding the question.” He stared at her. “I’m asking you.”The atmosphere instantly darkened. At last, Isolde lowered her eyes. “Yes. I never corrected her.”She hesitated. “And sometimes... I deliberately let her misunderstand.”Caelan’s expression darkened little by little. “Why?”She was silent for a long time before answering. “Because I didn’t want to lose you.”Her hand rested gently on her stomach. “When Ethan died, you promised him.”Her voice was barely above a whisper. “You promised you would take care of me and the baby.”Caelan said nothing.Ethan had died in front of him. His final act had been grabbing Caelan’s hand. The last word

Caelan canceled the engagement ceremony. The entire vampire world exploded with rumors on the same day.Members of the Voss family came three times before sunset. The hallways buzzed with hushed conversations.Caelan met with no one.He only said one sentence. “Keep searching.”Caelan went to my room. But it was already empty. My clothes were gone. My books were gone.Even the photographs were gone.It was as if I had never existed there at all.Standing in the center of the room, Caelan felt a restlessness he had never experienced before. He opened the wardrobe. A dusty cardboard box tumbled out.Inside were stacks of yellowing documents. The first thing he saw was a diploma.Claire Hartwell. His movements grew slower. For the first time, he realized how many places I could have gone.I never had to sta

The flight to Rio was now boarding.I looked at my phone one last time.No messages. No calls. And certainly nothing from Caelan. The announcement echoed through the terminal.“Flight 742 to Rio de Janeiro is now boarding.”I stood up.A sudden wave of nausea rolled through my stomach.Covering my mouth, I rushed into the restroom.Inside the stall, the violent retching left me barely able to stand. The woman staring back at me in the mirror hardly looked like myself anymore.Yet my hand drifted instinctively to my stomach.“Sorry.” I closed my eyes softly. “Mom's still getting used to this.”It was the first time I had called myself that. And the first time I truly realized that my future no longer belonged to me alone.Meanwhile. Vale Castle. The air inside the grand hall felt frozen.Every servant was kneeling. No one dared raise their head.A crash exploded from the study.Something shattered. The entire castle seemed to tremble.“Keep searching.”Caelan Vale's voice cut through th
