Countdown

In the fifth year of loving Gabriel, he inherited his late brother’s title as Vampire Lord— along with his brother’s widow, Chloe, the former Blood Queen, and, by blood and law, my kin-by-covenant. Every time he returned from her chambers, Gabriel would hold me gently and whisper, “Isabella, Chloe is only my Chosen Consort. Once she carries and delivers the Scion of the Blazetooth Coven, I will bind myself to you through a Blood Bond.” He said it was the only condition his family demanded for him to ascend as Vampire Lord. During the six months after we returned to Blazetooth Coven, he answer her summons a hundred times. At first, once a month. Then once a week. And eventually, every single night. On the hundredth night I stayed awake waiting for him, Chloe finally conceived. The news arrived together with another announcement— Gabriel and Chloe would soon be bound by Blood. My son looked up at me, confused and innocent. “Mom… didn’t they say Dad would form a Blood Bond with the Blood Queen he loves? Why hasn’t he come to take us home yet?” “Because,” I said softly, brushing my hand through his hair, “the Blood Queen he loves was never your mother.” “But that’s all right,” I added. “I’ll take you home. Our own home.” What Gabriel never realized was this— as the only daughter of a reigning Vampire King, I had never cared for the title of Blood Queen of Blazetooth Coven at all.

Chapter 1
I left the Northern Realm because of Gabriel Brown. My father had never believed Gabriel’s bloodline was worthy of standing beside me. I was the daughter of a reigning Vampire King, the sole heir of House Sterling— born for ancient crowns and royal legacies, not some peripheral bloodline lingering on the edges of the Court. And yet, for love, I gave up everything. My name.My title. My inheritance. I concealed my identity and fled the North with him. I never imagined our love wouldn’t even survive five years. As the memory of my father’s disapproval—and the worry he had tried to hide—rose in my mind, unease tightened in my chest. I closed my eyes, reaching for the ancient blood within me, seeking the quiet pull of my family’s power. Before I could fully connect, a heavy scent flooded my senses. Night-blooming jasmine.Strong. Overwhelming. Arms wrapped tightly around me from behind.Gabriel had returned. “Did I wake you?” he asked softly, his voice gentle against my ear. “It’s st

Chapter 2
“I reconnected with my family with almost no effort at all.” They were overjoyed—especially my father. When he learned that he had a grandson, the stoic Vampire King nearly broke down in tears. He urged me to return to the North immediately, to bring my child home where we belonged. Just then, my son stirred in his sleep and murmured softly, “Daddy… you promised me…” In two days, it would be his fifth birthday. Even in his dreams, my child was still holding on to the promise his father had made—to celebrate it with him. I brushed my fingers over his sleeping face, my vision blurring. Two more days.Just two more days, so that my son wouldn’t leave with regret. But before dawn broke, violent knocking shattered the quiet. My son’s dream ended abruptly. It was Walker, Gabriel’s mother. She had sent people to summon me and my child back to the Brown estate. I frowned. Walker had never hidden her disdain for us. In her eyes, I was nothing more than an Outcast Vampire from some

Chapter 3
My son couldn’t understand what had happened the day. He only cried silently in my arms. In a small, trembling voice, he asked me if his father no longer wanted him— if I was the only person left in the world who loved him. I held him tightly. “No,” I whispered. “My little hero is loved by many.” “Your grandparents miss us very much. They’ve been waiting to meet you. Would you like to leave with Mommy and go see them?” He hesitated. His fingers tightened around the toy car Gabriel had given him last year for his birthday. “But… I don’t want to leave Dad.” I swallowed the tears burning in my throat and spoke gently, “Your father and your grandmother don’t want us to stay here. Do you want to keep calling him ‘Dad’ when he wants you to call him ‘uncle’ for the rest of your life?” He froze. Slowly, he set the toy aside, tears spilling as he looked up at me and pleaded, “…Then can I stay until this birthday is over? Just this one. I want one last memory with him.” He refused

Before I left, I sent Gabriel one final message.Vampire Lord Gabriel,My son and I are gone.I wish you happiness in your new life.Goodbye. Forever. After pressing send, I terminated the number—then sank the phone into the depths of the lake, watching the ripples swallow it whole. At that very moment, Gabriel was still in the middle of the Blood Bond ritual.Without warning, a sharp pain clenched around his heart. He stared down at the message on his screen, dread flooding his mind in an instant. He called me—once, twice, again and again. All he received was the same cold, mechanical tone.Disconnected.“Gabriel? What’s wrong?” someone whispered urgently. “The guests are watching.”Chloe noticed the change in him and urged him forward, but Gabriel suddenly ripped the family ring from his finger and hurled it aside. Without another word, he turned and ran toward the villa doors.A guard stepped into his path.“Move!” Gabriel roared. “I am Vampire Lord Gabriel. Open the gates—I’m going

Chapter 5
Gabriel woke at dusk. The light was dim, shadows stretching long across the room. He was lying in their bedroom. The blanket draped over him still carried the faint, familiar scent of vanilla—her scent. And beside the bed stood a slender figure with long hair cascading down her back, wringing a warm, damp cloth.Isabella…His heart leapt. Without thinking, Gabriel reached out and pulled the woman into his arms.“You’re back!”But the heavy fragrance of night-blooming jasmine hit him instantly. His body stiffened.“Gabriel…” Chloe sobbed against his chest. “I thought you were really going to abandon me, that you wouldn’t complete the Blood Bond with me!”“Don’t worry,” she continued eagerly. “I’ve already driven that vampire woman away. If you like it here, then I’ll stay—with the child—and we’ll live here together!”For the first time, Gabriel realized how unbearable Chloe’s scent was.His brow furrowed sharply. Irritation surged into something close to disgust as he shoved her away.“

Chapter 6
Gabriel locked himself inside what had once been their bedroom. He stared at the messages on his phone—sent, delivered, unanswered—until dawn bled into the edges of the night.“She’ll come back,” he whispered to the empty room, clinging to the thought like a spell.“My Isabella would never leave me.”Footsteps sounded outside the door. His heart lurched. He shot to his feet.Even before opening it, he caught that familiar scent—soft vanilla, unmistakably hers.“Isabella!”He flung the door open and pulled the woman outside into his arms, holding her with desperate force.“I knew it,” he breathed, almost laughing. “I knew you wouldn’t leave me.”“Gabriel…”The voice froze him.The moment he realized who he was holding, every trace of relief drained from his face.Chloe.The warmth vanished from his expression, replaced by raw, barely restrained fury.“Who gave you permission,” he snarled, “to wear Isabella’s clothes?”Only then did he notice it—Isabella’s nightgown clinging to Chloe’s b

Chapter 7
By the time Gabriel decided he would pay any price to bring us back,my son and I had already arrived safely in the North. When my father—whom I hadn’t seen in so many years—laid eyes on us, he didn’t utter a single word of reproach.Instead, he and my mother pulled us both into their arms, holding us so tightly it hurt, tears slipping freely down their faces as they murmured over and over,“You’re home. You’re finally home.”In that moment, the mighty and formidable Vampire King of the North was no ruler of legends—only an aging father, trembling with relief for the children he had feared he’d lost forever.I was overwhelmed with gratitude… and guilt. As for my son, who had been shy and cautious at first around people he barely remembered, he quickly softened under his grandparents’ affection. Before long, the light returned to his eyes. What he’d endured had forced him to grow up far too soon.On our very first day back in the North, he looked at me with surprising seriousness and s

Chapter 8
I saw Gabriel again for the first time at the ceremony announcing my son as the official heir.As the Vampire Lord of the Blazetooth Coven, Gabriel had no choice but to abandon his obsessive search for us and travel north to attend the event. In recent years, while the Northern Court continued to rise in power and prestige, Blazetooth Coven had steadily declined.Under Gabriel’s erratic rule, their standing among the vampire hierarchy had fallen lower and lower. So when his mother and relatives knelt in reverence at the ceremony—and lifted their heads to see my son and me, robed in ceremonial splendor—they froze.Their eyes widened in disbelief.Gabriel, on the other hand, lit up.The exhaustion on his face vanished as he strode forward, seized my wrist, and shouted without regard for decorum,“Isabella! I finally found you! Do you have any idea how much I’ve missed you these past—”I flung his hand away before he could finish.Northern guards immediately moved in, towering and mercile
