FAZER LOGINAsher’s POV
“Learn how to fucking drive!”
I hit the horn as the idiot ahead of me swerves across the lane again. Instead of correcting himself, he slows down, making my temper flare. “Brilliant,” I mutter, sinking into my seat.
“Why hurry? It's not like I have a life.”
My phone buzzes on the passenger seat, but I ignore it. If this coach is calling to complain about me leaving before his usual lecture on discipline, he can talk to himself and if my professor wants to remind me about Thursday's research deadline then he can do that too but I'm done dealing with people today.
Practice was a disaster, my academic work is piling up with assignment due tonight, and I have another early-morning training session tomorrow with a sponsor photoshoot I've postponed twice and three unanswered messages from my father, and it's safe to say my day couldn't get any worse.
All I want is to go home, shower, eat, and sleep without hearing anything about sports, school or my future as an Alpha but apparently, the universe has other plans because by the time I reach my apartment's underground parking lot, my anger increased. I grab my sports bag and head upstairs, already imagining the hot shower waiting for me but the moment I unlock my front door, something feels wrong because the lights are on.
I distinctly remember switching them off before leaving, "Your father." Onyx, my wolf informs me as I push the door open but I don't need him to tell me because my father's scent has already reached my nose and there he is, comfortably seated on my couch as if he owns the place.
A glass of water sits on the table before him, while two bodyguards stand nearby, I drop my bag onto the floor. “Making yourself comfortable in my house, aren't you?”
I shut the door behind me. “How the hell did you even get inside?”
He doesn't answer. Instead, his eyes travels over me, pausing at the bruising on my elbow and the darker mark spreading across my knee.
For a moment, I wonder whether he's concerned then I remember who I'm dealing with.
He's probably preparing another speech about how hockey is distracting me from my responsibilities as Silvercrest's future Alpha.
Funny how he has another son, yet somehow every aspect of my life remains his personal business.n“That knee looks terrible,” he remarks.
“I'll survive.” I slip my hands into my pockets.
“Now, how did you get my access code?”
He ignores the question and points toward the opposite couch. “Sit down.”
I stare at him, In my own apartment?
“No, thanks.”
His expression tightens, but he eventually waves away my refusal. “Suit yourself. You need to stop shutting me out, Asher. A father and son shouldn't behave like strangers. The Moon Goddess intended families to respect and support one another.”
I suppress an exhausted sigh because family, tradition, and the Goddess...tose three words always appear whenever my father wants to be in control of something. “What do you want?”
“My grades are fine,” I interrupt before he can begin another lecture.
“I'm handling my research, and nothing has gone wrong. So unless the pack is on fire, tell me why you're here.”
His face becomes serious. “Have you heard about the revisions to the Promotion Trials?”
I pinch the bridge of my nose, you've got to be kidding me. He invaded my privacy to discuss that ridiculous competition?
Once a year, the next generation of Alpha leaders faced off in a series of trials that tested their fighting abilities, strategic thinking, and understanding of pack traditions and laws, all to prove who deserved to stand above the rest.
The whole event had always struck me as an elaborate contest for powerful families to show off.
The heirs competed for a week, the organizers announced the rankings, and everyone returned home with a trophy or a bruised ego but my father insisted I participate every year, leaving me little room to refuse.
I attended, completed the challenges, and got on with my life.
There was another reason I kept showing up, but I had no intention of discussing that with him.b“What about the Trials?” I ask.
“The regulations have been revised.”
I give him an incredulous look. “You broke into my apartment because of a rule change?”
“This year's results will determine the political and economic standing of every participating pack.”
He sets his glass down. “The rankings will influence financial support, access to anti-rogue medication, trade privileges, and political leverage for the next five years.”
My irritation begins to fade because this is different. Previously, the Trials had been little more than a competition and whatever happened during the event rarely affected the established order.
Now, the outcome could determine which packs prospered and which struggled to survive.
Apparently, the Council had decided that family names and generations of influence would no longer guarantee anyone a place at the top, I fold my arms. “Who came up with this genius plan?”
“The High Council.”
He sat farther into the couch, watching me carefully. “Silvercrest's future now depends on your performance.”
Why wouldn't the fate of an entire pack be placed on my shoulders?
But before I can respond, he adds another detail. “And there's something else. The heir who finishes in first place will receive a provisional seat on the High Council.”
I stare at him because now, that changes everything.
Asher’s POVFor a moment, I consider abandoning Vanessa and following Jaxon and Ezra to the car.I'm exhausted, starving, and in no condition to entertain her. All I want is to grab something to eat and get back to my apartment.Unfortunately, ignoring Vanessa has never been enough to make her go away. If anything, it only gives her more opportunities to invent another reason to approach me and I've never understood her fascination with me.Elites hardly acknowledge ordinary wolves unless they have something to gain, yet Vanessa has spent months doing everything possible to attract my attention. The endless flirting, her conveniently timed appearances, and the suspicious way she always seems to know where I'll be. She finally reaches me and stops unnecessarily close. Her perfume is so overpowering that I'm beginning to understand how I managed to detect her from across the parking lot. “Hi, Asher.”“Vanessa.”My cold greeting does absolutely nothing to discourage her. If anything, her
Asher’s POVRavenshade University is located in Chestnut Hill, close enough to Milan that people casually claim we attend school in the city, but far enough away that the statement isn't entirely accurate not that the distance makes much difference to me.Most of my time is spent moving between the university, the hockey rink, and my apartment. Those three places pretty much make up my entire world. Our training sessions take place at San Siro Stadium, and once the season begins, I'm there practically every day.By the time October rolls around, I probably spend more hours inside the rink than I do in my own bedroom. At least the apartment Jaxon, Ezra, and I share is less than ten minutes away when the roads aren't crowded. All three of us own cars, but that has never prevented those two from borrowing mine or involving themselves in matters that have absolutely nothing to do with them. “I still can't wrap my head around the fact that she doesn't remember you.”Jaxon's voice cuts thro
Asher’s POVAria gives a small nod before returning to her unpacking. She takes a neatly folded pile of clothes from her duffel bag while I mentally review the remaining things we need to discuss. “Let me know before you invite anyone over.”“Alright.”“And I don't want any guys spending the night here.”“I don't have guys spending the night.”Her response comes so quickly that I almost lift an eyebrow and she sounds genuinely offended by the suggestion. “Good then that shouldn't be a problem.”She shoots me a look before turning back to the dresser, where she carefully places another pile of clothes. “I hardly have visitors anyway,” she explains.“It's mostly Harper. Actually, I should probably tell you now that she might be coming around quite often.”I remember Harper perfectly well. Forgetting someone who had stared at me with that much enthusiasm would require considerable effort. “She's fine, just give me a heads-up if anyone else plans to visit.”My eyes shifts toward the bedro
Asher’s POV“I know this might not be the best moment to mention this, but...” Aria places her suitcase on the bed before turning to face me. “I assume you already know that Kieran and I used to be together.”We haven't even spent five fucking minutes in my apartment, and she's already bringing up my brother. She could've at least unpacked something before making this conversation uncomfortable. I rest my shoulder against the wall, wondering what kind of response she's expecting from me. Am I supposed to apologize on his behalf? Tell her he's an asshole? Congratulate her on finally discovering what the rest of us already know?“Women appreciate a little sympathy,” Onyx remarks inside my head. “Not that you'd know much about giving it.”“I don't care about your relationship,” I tell her. That's probably the closest thing to sympathy she's going to get from me. “Oh.”Her shoulders relax slightly as she runs a hand along her arm. She's not particularly good at hiding her feelings.Yester
Aria POVOne tap and that’s probably all she needs. She can throw it onto her stupid gossip page with the caption makes me look the most pathetic, and by tomorrow I’ll be walking into classes wondering how many people have seen me half naked. "What do you want?" I ask through clenched teeth."Nothing crazy." She slips the phone against her palm. "Unblock Kieran."The threat hanging over my head gets temporarily shoved aside by pure disbelief."You don’t get to block him and throw a tantrum because he picked me."She eyes me. "He asked you for something, send it to him."She cannot be serious. All this over a fashion designer?"Actually, since you suddenly have all this attitude, maybe you need something to keep you busy." She pouts."My favorite dress needs fixing too and I’m sure I can think of a few other things. You used to be so useful."Useful, it funny how differently she remembers those years. I don’t remember ever feeling like I had much of a choice."Don’t look at me like tha
Aria’s POVThere must be a limit to how much nerve one person can have, and Vanessa expecting me to drop everything just to give her my full attention is definitely testing my patience. What does she want me to do? Pull up a chair, make myself comfortable, and patiently listen to whatever rubbish she has to say?I tighten my hold on my suitcase and continue toward the entrance. “Oh, so you're pretending to be a tough girl now?” she calls behind me.“How long do you think you can keep that up?”Shit, her question hits a little too close to home and It's practically the same thing I've been wondering ever since I stepped out of the elevator.Still, I refuse to stop walking. Giving myself a motivational speech about standing up for myself doesn't suddenly make me brave enough to start a fight. There's a difference between defending yourself and deliberately putting yourself in a position to get beaten up. Given my history with Vanessa, I'm perfectly aware of where that line lies.I take
