Chapter 1

"Nicole Callahan, you called the police on Cece?" Mason Tavernier's voice rang out before he even made it through the door.

He hurled his car keys at the entryway wall, gouging a dent in the plaster.

I didn't so much as blink. "Her two hours were up."

"That's my assistant!" Mason jabbed a finger in my face and roared like a madman. "She just got the professor's recommendation letter! Do you have any idea what you've done? This will ruin her! Nicole, how can you be so vicious?"

"The value of what she stole exceeds 4,000,000 dollars." I turned to face him, my expression calm. "Have you ever read Article 264 of the Criminal Law?"

Mason snatched the wine decanter off the coffee table and hurled it to the floor.

The 24,000-dollar crystal vessel shattered at my feet. Red wine spread across my slippers like blood.

His face twisted with anger. "You have hundreds of pieces of jewelry. What's the harm in giving Cece one bracelet?

"Her advisor is the committee chair. Do you have any idea how hard I worked to… She's a kid from a small town. It's not easy for her to get a foothold in this city. I just wanted to help her.

"Nicole, when did you become so cold-blooded?"

I snorted. "Help her? Anyone who didn't know better would think she was your mistress. Plenty of college kids come from small towns every year. Every one of them has it hard.

"If you've got such a big heart, why not sell off the Tavernier Group and start a foundation? You can dedicate it to helping every kid who ever came out of a small town."

"Nicole, you're being completely unreasonable." Mason had no answer. His face flushed with humiliated anger.

"This day last year." I ignored him and pulled up a photo on my phone. "Our third wedding anniversary. I waited five hours for you at the Lakeview restaurant while you were off cheering on your Cecelia Swanson."

Mason's cold smile froze on his lips. "Nicole, you're jealous over something like that? That was the day of Cecelia's patent defense. I went to support her. It was just our anniversary. We can celebrate it every year."

His words left me speechless with anger. I swiped to the next photo. A Cartier blue box sat beside a celebration cake.

"For her patent celebration, you baked the cake yourself and picked out a bag. For my birthday, you gave me an expired supermarket coupon. Mason, tell me something. Am I your wife, or is Cecelia?"

"You actually need that bag?" Mason tipped his head back, his face full of impatience. "Nicole, you're 30 years old. Are you really going to squabble with a young girl?"

I smiled. "I'm not squabbling."

I sent her straight to prison instead.

"Nicole!" Mason's nostrils flared as he drew one ragged breath after another. He snatched up his car keys. "I don't want to argue with you right now. I'm going to get her out. My lawyer will talk to you tomorrow."

"Let me remind you of something." I turned the business card from my contact at the police station between my fingers. "If she isn't out before sunrise, I'll be reconsidering whether our marriage needs to continue."

The hospital director clapped me on the shoulder. "Young people should get out and see the world. The department fully supports this."When I told my parents, I expected pushback. Instead, they were far more supportive than I could have imagined. On the day I left, they came with me to the airport. Before I boarded, my mother took my hand with a smile. "Hector's son, Trevor, is in Angleas too. I already spoke with him. He'll pick you up when you land.""Mom..." I knew exactly where this was going and started to protest."Just hear me out. Trevor is spending this year there too, getting some field experience. Hector put him in charge of the company's Angleas branch."It's a foreign country, after all. The two of you can look out for each other, and it'll put your father and me at ease. You're a young woman out there alone. We can't help but worry."My mother winked. "Just think of it as making a friend. He has a wonderful personality. I'm sure the two of you will get along."Sin

Word got around that Arthur and Mason had reached out to contacts around the world for help, but no one was willing to lift a finger for them. The day the Tavernier Group's bankruptcy hit the trending topics, rain came down in sheets. The housekeeper came in with an umbrella. "Miss, Mr. Tavernier has been kneeling outside for an hour."I didn't look up. "Leave him. If he wants to kneel, let him."Outside the window, lightning cracked across the sky.Mason knelt in the downpour, soaked to the bone."Nicky!" He looked toward the door, his voice raw from shouting. "Every mistake, every single one, was mine. I'm begging you. Spare the Tavernier family. Give us a way out."I flipped through a medical journal at my own pace, bored by the whole spectacle.I had no interest in dealing with him, so I got up and went back to my room.Through the window, I looked down at Mason. At that moment, he looked as pitiful as a dog left out in the storm. After we married, my family had given th

I nodded and turned to leave.Behind me, Cecelia's tearful voice rose. "Mr. Tavernier, this is all my fault. I've ruined you…""It's not your fault. She's the one who never understood me…" Mason sounded exhausted. As the elevator doors closed, I heard him shout, "Nicole! You'll regret this!"…On the day the divorce cooling-off period ended, Mason walked into the courthouse in a full suit."Nicole." He suddenly grabbed my wrist. "It's not too late to change your mind."I pulled free and tucked the divorce certificate into my bag. "Mason, do you really think you deserve another chance?"I walked out of the courthouse and called my father, Peter Callahan. "Dad, pull every resource we've given to the Tavernier Group."There was a pause on the other end. "What happened?"I told him everything about Mason and Cecelia, including how Mason had used my mother's name to secure a VIP hospital room for Cecelia's mother."That bastard." My father slammed his hand on the table. "Mason, t

The photo showed a lounge with a bed far too large for any break room.I swapped shifts with a colleague and went straight to the Tavernier Group.I pushed open the door to the CEO's office.Cecelia sat in Mason's chair, twirling his pen between her fingers. She shot to her feet the moment she saw me. Her collar hung open, exposing red marks on her neck."Dr. Callahan? Mr. Tavernier is in a meeting..."I glanced past her at the lounge door, which stood slightly ajar. I could hear water running inside."Move."Cecelia blocked the doorway. "This is Mr. Tavernier's private lounge. You can't—"I shoved past her. The door slammed against the wall.Mason stood in front of the mirror with a towel wrapped around his waist, water still dripping from his hair."Nicky?" He scrambled for his shirt. "Why are you here?"I stared at the marks on his skin. "Seems like I picked a bad time."Cecelia rushed in. "Mr. Tavernier was at the hospital all night taking care of my mom, and he has an

Mason arrived quickly. The moment he stepped into the room, he grabbed my hand. "Nicky! Just listen to my explanation—"I shook him off. "What explanation? How did you help your mistress' mother take over a VIP room? Or why she's calling herself your mother-in-law?"Cecelia suddenly dropped to her knees. "Dr. Callahan, this is all my fault! My mom is from the countryside. She doesn't understand how things work. She saw Mr. Tavernier bring me here and got the wrong idea...""I am so sorry, Dr. Callahan!" The old woman clutched her hospital gown and bowed. "I'm just an old fool. I've always wanted a son-in-law like Mr. Tavernier…""Cece is already old enough to marry, but no matter how much I pushed her, she never brought a boyfriend home. When I got sick, she and Mr. Tavernier ran around taking care of me, and he was so attentive. I just assumed..."The old woman's voice caught, and her eyes filled with tears."I know we don't deserve this. Mr. Tavernier is so capable and so hands
