PEYTON

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

I tightened my fingers around Zayn’s arm and forced myself to look away.

Logan was my past, and I refused to let him ruin another evening for me.

“Are you all right?” Zayn murmured, leaning closer.

I nodded quickly. “I’m fine.”

He followed my gaze toward the far corner of the ballroom, where Logan stood beside Demi.

“Do you know them?”

“My ex fiancé,” I whispered as Logan began walking toward us.

I hadn’t prepared myself for this. I had imagined run

PEYTONDoctor, what happened?”I sprang to my feet as soon as I saw him approaching. My heart was pounding so hard that I could barely hear anything around me. Aunt Marie stood beside me, clutching her handbag with both hands. The doctor removed his glasses.“There was a complication during the procedure but we’ve managed to control it. Her condition is now stable, and the procedure has been completed successfully.”I stared at him, afraid to believe what I was hearing.“So she’s going to be alright?”“She is stable, but we need to monitor her closely. She’ll remain in recovery for now, so I’m afraid you won’t be able to see her just yet.”Aunt Marie covered her mouth, tears filling her eyes.“Thank God,” she whispered. “Thank you, doctor,”My knees weakened with relief. I sank into the nearest chair, pressing both hands against my face as tears slipped down my cheeks.Faith was alive. After everything we had been through, she was finally getting another chance.Aunt Marie sat beside

  • The Bride Who Never Walked Down The Aisle   Chapter 13

ZAYNI had never imagined Peyton Carter would be the woman to make me lose control of myself. When she asked me to have sex with her in the back of my car, I thought the humiliation she’d suffered at the charity ball had finally become too much for her. I expected her to regret the request the moment I touched her, but she had looked me in the eyes and told me she wanted me.And I had wanted her too.More than I should have.As I sat in my study the following morning, I couldn’t stop thinking about what had happened between usI could still remember the way she’d held on to me, the way she’d kissed me as though she wanted to forget the entire world, and the way she’d whispered my name against my mouth.Being inside her had felt better than anything I had prepared myself for, and the realization unsettled me For a brief moment, I had forgotten that Peyton wasn’t Elena.I had forgotten the years I’d spent trying to bury the memories of my former wife, the woman who had once made me bel

PEYTON“Here?”Zayn stared at me as though he couldn’t believe what he’d just heard, his gaze searching my face for any sign that I was joking.“Yes, here,” I replied, forcing myself to hold his gaze even though my heart was pounding so hard I could barely think straight.“Peyton, look at me. Are you sure this is what you want?”I hated that question because I didn’t have a good answer. All I knew was that I wanted to forget Logan’s accusations, Demi’s cruel smile, and the humiliation I’d endured that evening. I wanted to feel like a woman someone could desire rather than a bride who had been abandoned at the altar.“Yes, Zayn. I want you.”Something shifted in his expression, and before I could reconsider my decision, he reached for my hand.“Then tell me to stop if you change your mind.”He leaned closer, giving me enough time to pull away, but I didn’t. His lips brushed mine gently, almost hesitantly, and the unexpected tenderness made my chest tighten.I had expected him to kiss

PEYTONI can’t believe Zayn had just announced our engagement in front of Logan and Demi without giving me the slightest warning, and now he expected me to smile as though he hadn’t turned my entire evening upside down.Logan was still staring at me, his jaw clenched so tightly that I wondered whether he might crack a tooth.Demi, on the other hand, looked as though someone had just informed her that she had lost a million-dollar lottery ticket.I would have found their reactions amusing if my heart weren’t beating so furiously.“We should go,” Zayn said and led me away. I turned to him as soon as we were out of earshot.“You could have warned me,” I whispered. “About announcing our engagement tonight!”“I told you we would be announcing it soon.”“Soon doesn’t mean tonight, Zayn.”I glared at him.He chuckled, his fingers tightening around mine as another couple approached to congratulate us.“Smile, sweetheart,” he murmured. “People are watching.”The pet name caught me off guard.I

I had imagined running into Logan someday, perhaps when I was stronger and no longer felt my heart crack at the mere mention of his name. I had never imagined seeing him so soon, especially when I was standing beside the man I had agreed to marry.“Keep smiling,” Zayn whispered, his hand settling against the small of my back. “Unless you want everyone here to think something is wrong.”I forced my lips into a smile, although I doubted it looked convincing.Logan stopped in front of us, his gaze fixed on me.“Peyt

PEYTONI stared at my reflection in the mirror, my phone pressed against my ear as Aunt Marie’s question echoed through my head.“I’m asking you a question!” she snapped. “Did you sleep with someone for that money?”“Aunt Marie, I—”My mouth fell open, but no words came out.“You what? Why are you stammering if you have nothing to hide?”My fingers tightened around the phone. How was I supposed to answer her? Technically, I hadn’t slept with Zayn, but I had agreed to marry him in exchange for money. Explaining that arrangement would only invite more questions, and I wasn’t prepared to answer any of them.Besides, what would happen when Zayn and I announced our engagement? If Aunt Marie discovered that the man she suspected me of sleeping with was a billionaire, she would never leave me alone.“I borrowed the money from a friend,” I finally said.“A friend?” She scoffed. “Since when do you have friends who can afford to pay for a kidney transplant?”“People have helped me before, Aunt
