Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
In my last life, Christine uploaded that video online, and the whole internet turned on me.

The parents lost themselves in their rage. Right there in the courtroom, they poured gasoline over me and burned me alive.

Even now, just the thought of how the flames ate through me down to the bone made my whole body tremble.

There was a flicker of satisfaction in Malcolm's eyes, though his face still wore that mask of righteous anger.

"Sandra, we've been together this long, and only now do I see what kind of cold, vicious person you really are! You're the head of the department. You're the only one with emergency access to the ward. If it wasn't you, then who else could it be?"

The families he stirred up were on the edge, eyes red, closing in on me like they wanted to tear me apart. They kept pressing closer.

"Everyone, stop!" Jack stepped in front of me, shielding me. "This is a hospital! Who gave you the right to act like this?"

As soon as he finished, a line of security guards appeared behind him, each holding a stun baton.

"What proof do you have that I set the fire?" I said. "Did any of you actually see me do it?"

Last time, I was labeled the killer without even understanding how. This time, I wasn't going to let them pin it on me so easily.

"Sandra, stop lying!" Christine snapped. "When I got off work yesterday, I saw someone sneaking around. That was you."

She wouldn't let go of it.

One of the guards, with dark circles heavy under his eyes, stepped forward, clearly irritated.

"Miss, you can't just accuse someone like that without proof. Our inpatient ward locks down at nine every night. No one goes in or out after that. The fire didn't start until eleven. What proof do you have that one of our patients slipped out and set it?"

Christine shrank back, visibly shaken by his tone.

Malcolm's expression darkened. Without a word, he pulled up another surveillance video.

In it, I was wearing a white coat, skillfully avoiding the nurses on duty as I slipped into the pediatric ward. Not long after, thick smoke started seeping out from the crack under the door.

The footage was crystal clear. You could even see the hospital patient uniform under the coat, the pant legs marked with several burned holes.

Even though I had seen all this before, the shock still hit me.

If the guards hadn't also pulled up footage from the same time showing me resting in my room, I might've started wondering if I was sleepwalking.

For a moment, everyone fell into confusion.

"How are there two of them in different places?"

"Which video is real?"

Even the furious parents hesitated, unsure what to believe.

Malcolm pointed at me without hesitation.

"I've been with her for ten years! You think I wouldn't recognize her? She's the one who burned the hospital. I'm sure of it!"

After watching the police take Malcolm and Christine away with my own eyes, I turned and went back into the hospital.Once I handed everything over to the doctor covering my shift, I went home. Two days later, I got a call from the police. The video analysis results were in.Both videos Christine had provided were confirmed to be AI-generated.The second fingerprint on the lighter came back, too. It was Christine's.The forensic team also reconstructed the footage. The person dressed in a white coat and hospital scrubs, pretending to be me, was Christine.Once the truth came out, it spread across the internet fast. Before long, both Christine and Malcolm were being condemned everywhere.A few months later, the trial began. As the victim, I was allowed to sit in and watch.Based on the evidence and the police investigation, the judge delivered the verdict. Malcolm's crimes were severe and had caused a major social impact. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison.Christine, as a

Malcolm's eyes widened, shock flashing across his face."How did you find out?"The officers hesitated, then one of them tried to reason with me."Dr. Hill, we understand you're upset about being framed, but you can't make claims like this without evidence. Something like this affects reputations. It involves families."I didn't rush. I pulled up the security footage from my house and played it for everyone. The parents who had been watching from the sidelines all crowded in, gathering around to see."A while back, Malcolm told me to take more night shifts so I could free up time for our honeymoon. I never questioned him. Until one day, I went home to grab a file I'd forgotten and heard something strange. To be safe, I had a camera installed in the house. I just never got around to telling him. I had been too busy with surgeries."On the screen, Malcolm stood shirtless, pulling a shy-looking Christine into his arms. They kissed, then started stripping off each other's clothes be

I grabbed her wrist and pried her phone out of her hand. The screen lit up, showing the same video of me setting the fire.I scrolled down. A photo popped up, showing Malcolm from a girlfriend's perspective. The moment I saw it, everything clicked. Now I knew why Malcolm and Christine had worked together to destroy me in my last life. The truth was right there.Calmly, I handed the phone to the police.Christine saw the photo as well, and panic hit her fast. Sweat beaded along her temple."Sandra, that's my phone! That's my privacy! What right do you have to hand it over? And those officers have been siding with you this whole time. How do we know you didn't bribe them?"At that, the officers immediately took out their badges. They had been around long enough to know exactly what that kind of accusation meant."Ms. Wagner, slandering an officer is a crime. You'd better watch yourself. Until the evidence is fully processed, you're both suspects. You'll stay right here."Just t

Malcolm and Christine looked upset, though there was a flicker of guilt they couldn't quite hide. A few well-meaning parents pushed them into seats."You two were so helpful earlier, finding the so-called culprit and leading us to confront her. After everything you've done, how could you not come with us to see the kids?"Malcolm kept his face stiff and said nothing. Christine forced a tight smile. Before long, we arrived at the Southford branch. The whole group headed up to the third-floor pediatric ward."Dad!""Mom!"The kids playing near the ward entrance heard the footsteps and ran straight into their parents' arms. The parents, who had just managed to calm down, broke all over again, clutching their children's small bodies as they cried.A little girl took her mother's hand and walked over to me, the mother's face still streaked with tears. She held out a paper flower."Dr. Hill, I saw the news. Thank you for saving us. I can still see my mom and dad because of you." S

In the surveillance footage, the kids looked healthy, their cheeks flushed as they slept peacefully in their small hospital beds. Every now and then, one of them would mumble softly in their sleep.A parent standing up front spotted their child and lunged for my phone."That's my daughter. She's alive!"Hands shot out from behind, all reaching for the phone at once."My baby's alive, too!""My son's okay!"One by one, as each parent confirmed their child was safe, the crowd broke into overwhelming sobs. They clung to each other, covering their faces as they cried. The sound spread like a wave, loud enough to stir the sleeping children.A slightly older boy climbed out of bed barefoot and walked under the camera."Dad, why are you crying?"Dr. Hill said if I keep taking my medicine for a few more days, I can go home soon."He grabbed a tissue and waved it in the air, pretending to wipe his father's tears.Watching that, I felt a quiet sense of relief. All the effort it took

"I don't know what kind of trick she used, but she's the one who killed your children!" Malcolm barked. "The person you're looking for is right in front of you. Grab her!"Malcolm stepped in front of the families, shouting at the top of his lungs. Something about his attitude felt off, and even the grieving parents started to notice.Jack frowned and spoke up, trying to keep things fair. "If we both think the other video is fake, then let the police examine them and decide."Malcolm let out a cold laugh, his gaze moving back and forth between Jack and me."Now I get it. You two must've gotten close while she was admitted, huh? Sandra, that's disgusting! No wonder even the hospital guards are lining up to defend you."He made a show of looking revolted.Jack clenched his fists."What are you talking about? When she was admitted, she wasn't even conscious. She was out of it for days before she stabilized. And you, her boyfriend, didn't visit her once. Now you're standing here th
