Chapter 9

Author: Winter Sunrise
The police quickly dispatched officers to the chapel Emily had described. They arrived to find the place deserted, with no holy men in sight.

The self-proclaimed holy man was nothing but a fraudster who had preyed on her desperation. They sold Emily a toxic concoction that supposedly gave a short-term boost to the body, but the pill wasn't a cure-all for all illnesses.

Emily had been duped, and worse, her actions ended up killing someone. At the detention center, she cried bitterly and insisted she was innocent. She, too, had been deceived.

But buying a fraudulent medicine that resulted in death left little room for claims of innocence. With the evidence stacked against her, she was convicted.

During a routine medical exam in custody, doctors discovered she was pregnant.

The news spread like wildfire, leaving everyone who heard it in a state of shock. After all, it was widely known that Adrian's prolonged poor health had rendered him physically incapable of intimacy. There was li

Charlie's death had sent shockwaves through high society. Yet here he was, alive and healthier than anyone had imagined. The sight shattered Adrian's understanding of the world.Charlie looked at him with a calm amusement flickering in his eyes. He whispered, "Claire, let's go in. We shouldn't keep our guests waiting." As he spoke, his arm tightened possessively around my waist.Just as we turned to enter the magnificent ballroom, Adrian's enraged roar echoed behind us."Claire! Charlie! Don't you dare walk away."I didn't stop, and Charlie didn't even bother to look back. Instead, he pulled me closer and said, "Ignore him. He's just a madman."I smiled and was about to say something when something unexpected happened. There was a piercing scream behind us, followed by a muffled thud.I instinctively turned, and Charlie also stopped walking. A slight frown creased his brow as he looked back. The scene before us plunged the noisy entrance into stunned silence, then erupted into

News of my marriage to Charlie spread quickly, and soon the entire upper circle was buzzing. Everyone was waiting for the drama to unfold. On the day of the wedding, the Quirrel and Gillan families had booked the same hotel. Both our ballrooms were located at opposite ends, separated only by the central courtyard."Look at her. She's marrying a man on his deathbed. It's obvious she's just after his money," someone said.I turned and saw Adrian leaning heavily on a cane. His complexion was sallow, and his eyes were sunken deep into their sockets. He looked like a walking skeleton. Emily stood beside him, offering support with a painted-on smile, though anxiety flickered plainly in her eyes. The shadow of death clinging to him had grown darker since I had last seen him. I had once thought he had two months left. Now, I doubted he would live to see the end of the week.I stared at his wasted, dying frame. Any anger I felt melted away, replaced by a cold sense of pity."We don't kn

I didn't stop walking. The Gillan estate was only a few hundred yards from the Quirrels' since they were located within the same neighborhood. As soon as we reached the villa's entrance, a young man rushed out, and his face alight with exhilaration."Aunt Susan, come quick. Charlie's woken up. He's awake."Her eyes widened in disbelief, and tears instantly welled up. She stumbled toward the house, muttering, "Awake? Charlie's awake? Is it true?"I followed Susan inside. Everyone in the living room wore expressions of shock and overwhelming relief. The young man who had just delivered the news said excitedly, "It's true, Aunt Susan. The doctor's here, and he said Charlie's condition is stable now. It's a miracle that he even woke up."Susan could no longer hold herself together. She grabbed my hand and squeezed it tightly."Claire, having you here is the best thing that could have happened." Her voice was choked with emotion. She hadn't expected the astrologer's words to be so

"Adrian!""Adrian!"Lydia and Emily, who had been standing by in stunned silence, shrieked in unison.I glanced down at the horrifying pool of blood on the floor, then back at Adrian. Seeing the shadow of death on his face, I sneered. The inevitable had finally begun. In my past life, the astrologer had Adrian sign our marriage contract immediately after reading my chart. From that day forward, his health improved daily. Without me, his three-month countdown had officially begun.Lydia went pale with terror and shouted for someone to call an ambulance. Emily rushed to Adrian's side. She wept bitterly as she frantically pulled out a small brown bottle, then quickly shook out several dark pills. Without a second thought, she stuffed them into his mouth."Don't worry, Adrian. You must have skipped your doses lately. I've obtained a more effective traditional remedy for you. Just take them, and you'll be fine." Emily remarked. The pills looked dubious and of questionable origin, w

I met Adrian's gaze without a trace of fear."You're right. If you don't bring Mrs. Quirrel over, I'll kill myself right here. I'll turn your wedding into a funeral."Adrian's face darkened, and his hand shot out to clamp around my throat."How dare you!"I stared at him fearlessly, with open contempt. In my past life, my fear of him and my desperate need for his approval led to that terrible end. But now, I am no longer afraid. What was the worst Adrian could do? Kill me?I instinctively struggled as Adrian's hand tightened around my throat. Just when I thought he was about to strangle me to death, a sharp voice rang out."Adrian, let her go this instant. What on earth are you doing?"His grip on my neck loosened slightly, and I took the opportunity to gasp for air.Lydia stood at the doorway with a stern expression. Beside her was Susan Keller from the villa next door.Lydia glared at Adrian before forcing a strained smile toward her guest."I'm so sorry, Mrs. Gillan. Ple
